So the day started and ended well for Mark Selby, it's just the bit in the middle that he won't be happy with.

At one stage, Higgins was 10-4 up with Selby in all sorts of trouble. But you don't become world number one for nothing and Selby reeled off the last three frames of the day. Read Shamoon Hafez's first day report here.

He knows frames can make a difference come tomorrow night. Once he's got over that initial disappointment as John Virgo said, 10-7 is a nice lead to have.

I think there will be loads of adrenaline pumping for both players, each for different reasons. It's been a fascinating session of snooker. I think by the end of the night they'll have cleared their minds of all of that. 

It's just an astonishing standard by the world champion and world number one. He's superb. You'd expect it but for a minute there it didn't look like it was going to happen. He was on the ropes and John Higgins gave him enough breathing space but got away with it.

John Higgins is furious with himself after leaving himself snookered after potting a blue. He then has an 'aargh' moment as he smashes the balls in frustration and leaves a red on, which Selby downs.

Selby does the rest to win the frame - meaning he took each of the last three today.

Selby is now looking the man in form, racing through the balls, making 47, so it comes as a bit of a surprise to see this straight-forward red miss.

It is not fatal to his hopes in this final frame of the day, but that was a chance to wrap it up in one visit though. He does, however, still hold a 47-0 advantage in frame 17.

There have been some wonderful moments since the World Championship moved to the Crucible Theatre, and snooker writer Hector Nunns has managed to condense all the unforgettable matches into one book., external

“The Steve Davis v Dennis Taylor match from 1985 was a no brainer and the first port of call, and both players talked at length about that final," says the author.

“Jimmy White’s near misses, Cliff Thorburn’s 147 and Ronnie O’Sullivan’s meltdown against Peter Ebdon, when he made an infamous 12 break taking over five minutes, are also in there.

“I have been watching since around 1982 and my personal favourite was the 2003 match between Paul Hunter and Ken Doherty. He was 15-9 up and made an amazing comeback to win in the decider.

“It was a labour of love, it made me appreciate this championship even more. I have taken time to be inside the arena this year and to take in the atmosphere of it.”

I think John Higgins at some stage would have expected this type of response from Mark Selby and as we sit it's 4-4 in the session. 

John Higgins hasn't got any reason to panic and even if he was to lose the last frame, I'd still say it was a good day and good job done.

Is John Higgins now feeling the pressure? Selby has won two on the bounce, and Higgins misses what looks a routine red into the middle. Selby could end the session in style here. He is already up to 34.

Frame 16: Selby 6-10 Higgins (121 -12, Selby 121)

Whisper it quietly, we may well still have a final going on. Selby smashed in a break of 81 in his last frame, he has now gone even bigger with his first century of the match - a stunning clearance of 121 under pressure.

Don't write off the reigning world champion just yet.  

Higgins took 12 points at the start of frame 16, but Selby is now hoping to pull another one back. He now leads 51-12.

Marc Bazeley‏: If Higgins wins this with a session to spare, they should still play out the dead frames like they used to in the 1930s.

Selby will have enjoyed that. Winning a frame in one visit is exactly what the doctor ordered.

He'll be going out now and thinking 'come on, two frames and we can win them both and he'll have done a job'.

Apart from winning it here in 1997, against Stephen Hendry - the best player in the world at the time - my favourite memory is watching Alex Higgins in 1982, his semi-final win over Jimmy White that year was magnificent. 

Dennis Taylor beating Steve Davis in 1985 is another, as well as Ronnie O'Sullivan's quickest 147 the year I won it.

There are so many great memories. We were here inside the Crucible Theatre on the eve of the tournament and it was so wonderful to watch some great moments and to remember them again.

That pink off the spot from Higgins leads Selby to show a little bit of what he is made of. A break of 81, in one visit, is just what he needed.

As usual, he has a glance up at his family and friends, but he can't even muster a smile. Two frames to go, at the moment Selby would be delighted to make it 10-7 at the end of the day from this position.

Not everyone is hoping for a Selby fightback.

Selby looks dispirited as he leaves a long red over the corner pocket, which Higgins dispatches.

But the Scot misses a pink off the spot. If you are in the business of looking for turning points, maybe, just maybe, that could be one. Still a long, long way to go of course.

Anyway, a chance for the so-called Jester from Leicester, who certainly hasn't had much to smile about since about 3pm.
