    Frame 4: Selby 2-2 Higgins

Phillip Higgins: What a great break from Higgins!! Looking like it could be a cracker of a final.

Dark Matter‏: Credit where it's due, that was a good break after the way he's been playing.

Chris Lincoln: Higgins has proved he has the ingredients to win this but must avoid costly errors with Selby ready to pounce.

  3. Third highest break of the tournamentpublished at 15:24 British Summer Time 30 April 2017

    Frame 4: Selby 2-2 Higgins

That was fantastic from John Higgins, and it is the third highest break of this year's tournament.

If Ronnie O'Sullivan is going to be denied the £10,000 prize for the highest break then we will have to see a maximum from either Mark Selby or Higgins in the final.

It would be nice to see, that's for sure, it would also be the first ever maximum in a Crucible final.

    Frame 4: Selby 2-2 Higgins (0-141, Higgins 141)

A Selby safety mistake early in frame four has been fully punished and we go into the mini-session break tied at 2-2.

Higgins potted the red, albeit a bit fortunately, and then he gets going and there is no looking back. He makes the first century break of the final, a stunning 141 clearance.

Both players have been a bit nervous and not at their best, but we have a game on. Top stuff.

    Frame 4: Selby 2-1 Higgins

    Ken Doherty
1997 world champion at The Crucible

Talking about the players discussing the cushions in-between play.

This table has a new cloth on it and what happens on the cushion cloth is sometimes the cue ball traps, so it's a little bit slower. Both players are just a little bit unnerved.

Don't forget the semi-final is played over 57 frames, two matches over two days. This is a new cloth, it's going to take a few frames just to bed in. I'm sure the players will get used to it very quickly."

Cliff Thorburn's first world title win against Alex Higgins saw drama taking place both on and off the table. The Canadian had fallen 5-1 and 9-5 behind, before producing a fightback to eventually triumph 18-16.

However, the BBC were inundated with complaints after switching their coverage to broadcast live footage of the SAS storming the Iranian Embassy in London to end a six-day siege.

    Frame 3: Selby 2-1 Higgins

If Mark Selby is to retain his title, he may well need the snooker gods with him.

They were for this shot from frame two that saw him bounce the cue ball off three cushions to pocket a red. Played for and got? You decide.

  10. Selby back aheadpublished at 15:05 British Summer Time 30 April 2017

    Frame 3: Selby 2-1 Higgins (121-8, Selby breaks of 63 and 58)

It is fair to say John Higgins has not been at his best so far. He fails to take advantage of Selby's mistakes and the 2016 world champion does the rest to move back in front.

Oohs and aahs from the Crucible crowd. That is always the sign that both players are missing. Selby looks to have the frame in the bag but misses this routine red. Higgins can't make him pay though.

    Frame 3: Selby 1-1 Higgins

    John Parrott
1991 world champion at The Crucible

Talking about the head-to-head record between the players at the Crucible.

"As it's gone to a longer frame format, it's John who's held the upper-hand, which might surprise a few people.

"Mark Selby has beaten him once here at the Crucible very early here in the first rounds 10-4, other than that John Higgins has been doing very, very well."

    Frame 3: Selby 1-1 Higgins

So what's going on at the moment? John Higgins missed a black off the spot earlier in the day, and Selby did likewise in the third. But it is not pivotal as Higgins fails in an attempt to sink a red into the middle. 56-0 to Selby in frame three.

    Frame 2: Selby 1-0 Higgins

    Frame 2

Mark Selby, 42-0 behind, is in a pickle as he needs a three-cushion escape to hit a red, but he not only hits it, but sends it in the middle pocket. He looks at Higgins a bit sheepishly, as he knows it was a massive fluke.

Both players then give the table back to each other, with Higgins missing a pink into the bottom corner. He now leads 49-1 in the second, but this one is not going to be finished any time soon.

    Shamoon Hafez
    BBC Sport at The Crucible

Widely regarded as the best referee in the sport, the no nonsense Dutchman Jan Verhaas is taking charge of his sixth world final.

"I still get the same buzz every time I step out there," he told me while setting up the table before the match.

"I have been coming for 24 years and it is a great honour to be refereeing the final  on the 40th anniversary of the World Championship being held at the Crucible.

And what is he expecting from these two gritty players?

"I am prepared for the long one, but it does not matter to me which way the match goes. I am fit and looking forward to a great final."
