1997 world champion on BBC Two

There were a couple of good long pots that will give Stephen Maguire a bit of confidence, knocking the balls round the angles,

He scraped it, he didn't win it in one go but that's how you have to do it sometimes.

If he can win this session he'll be happy because it will give him a chance this evening.

  2. Maguire wins his first framepublished at 15:40 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2019

    Frame 5: Ding 4-1 Maguire

It''s been the longest frame of the match so far but Stephen Maguire will not care a jot about that. He's finally up and running.

    Frame 5: Ding 4-0 Maguire

Ding Junhui is bossing the safety exchanges at the moment.

He's forced another mistake out of Stephen Maguire and has a mid-range red to the bottom right corner....

But he's missed. Maguire is just a few balls from the finishing line in this frame.

Another frame that ticks close to the half-hour mark.

Maguire really needs to get it to stay in the contest.

    Frame 5: Ding 4-0 Maguire

Ding Junhui is in a right spot of bother.

A four-cushion escape isn't standard practice. Four goes down. Four misses. So far.

That's 16 points back to Stephen Maguire, who is now 39 ahead with 59 left.

    Frame 5: Ding 4-0 Maguire

    What. A. Pot.

Stephen Maguire rolls in a long red but he can't buy a position on a colour at the moment.

Still rolling in behind the green, means Ding Junhui will have to get out of a tricky snooker when he comes back in to bat.

    Frame 5: Ding 4-0 Maguire

Stephen Maguire is having one. In behind the yellow he misses with several attempts to rest on a red on the bottom rail before finally getting it right.

Looks like there's a slight drift on the table from left to right.

That was a lovely pot from Stephen but he should not have had his hand on the table there. It was a careless safety from Ding.

    Frame 5: Ding 4-0 Maguire

It's not just raining on Stephen Maguire at the minute, it's absolutely lashing down.

After running a little short, he goes brave with a pink into the bottom right corner, trying to develop a cluster of reds but is all lucked out. Absolutely zero to go at here.

But that safety is a tad loose from Ding. He'll have another long red to get going.

    Frame 5: Ding 4-0 Maguire

That's better from Stephen Maguire, as he slaps a blue in to the middle. He's up to 37 and looking for his first half century of the match.

    Frame 5: Ding 4-0 Maguire

Another fairly tactical opening with Stephen Maguire and Ding Junhui both struggling to take early chances.

This is a bit of chance though for Ding. A long red over the bottom left bag that will need a touch of swerve around the yellow - which he takes only to find himself slap bang in the middle of the reds without any easy path to a colour.

Stephen Maguire is going to get back to the table.

    Frame 5: Ding 4-0 Maguire

The players are back and Stephen Maguire will probably need to win this session 3-1 to give himself a decent shout going into the evening.

It was a fairly cagey start but is it any wonder...

This is the first year the total prize money pot has tipped over the £1m mark and aside from having the chance to win one of snooker's Triple Crown events, the lucrative reward for the winner speaks for itself.

    • Winner: £200,000
    • Runner-up: £80,000
    • Semi-finalist: £40,000
    • Highest break: £15,000

As it stands, Ding Junhui is looking good to add a fairly hefty amount to his bank account.

  17. 'Stephen needs one good break to get going'published at 14:56 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2019

    Ding 4-0 Maguire - mid-session interval

    Ken Doherty
1997 world champion on BBC Two

I played so well to reach the 2001 final but lost 10-1 to Ronnie O'Sullivan. He wasn't playing sensationally but I couldn't get my game going and settle down.

Stephen just needs one good frame, one good break and then he can be up and running.

I was embarrassed about that final and Stephen will feel the same until he can get his arm going.

Everything is going wrong for Stephen Maguire at the moment and he is being punished.

It's a completely different day to yesterday for him and you become embarrassed about your own performance and it can be very hard to stop it.
