  2. The Spirit of Athenepublished at 20:04 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2016

Another interesting thing to note from Sophie's short film is that producers used a piece of music called 'Spirit of Athene' (Athene is the name of Sophie’s horse).

This was a piece specially commissioned for Sophie to compete too in Rio; its composer is Nick Hooper who has worked on Harry Potter films amongst many other things. He has a daughter with cerebal palsy, and met Sophie through her.

    A touching moment for all.

When the SPOTY producers approached actress Sarah Lancashire to work on their piece for Sophie Christiansen, it was an instant yes.

In fact, Lancashire was delighted - saying she was "privileged" to help tell the story of a Paralympic legend and mathematical genius. In case you didn't know already, Sophie combines her all-conquering equestrian performances with her work as a statistical analyst at Goldman Sachs. Yep, she's pretty cool.

  4. 'The best year of my career'published at 20:00 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2016

Andy Murray, speaking from Miami: "It's been the best year in my career. Winning Wimbledon for the second time, I would never have expected to finish the year number one but Johanna Konta getting into the top 10, Andy Lapthorne winning the quads, Gordon Reid the wheelchair doubles, and my brother getting to doubles number one. It's been a great year for British tennis and I am so proud to have been part of that."

    On becoming a father:

"I have loved it. It was a challenge obviously and it made me realise tennis isn't the most important thing. Away from the court I am a lot happier now I'm not thinking about tennis all the time as I used to and that's helped me on the court."

    Can you stay number one?

"I will try my best. That is why I am out here training in Miami away from my family and trying to keep getting better. It's taken a lot of hard work to get here but I am getting older now and there are some big talents coming up. I'm going to give it my best shot."

Not really, but the crew did go through at least two packs of mints (extra strong in case you are interested) to get his head out of the stable door.

It's got to be an emotional Mark Cavendish pulling on the iconic yellow jersey at the Tour de France for the first time after winning stage one. He had been favourite to do so two years earlier in his mother’s home town of Harrogate when the Tour started in Yorkshire but crashed out. This year, many experts thought he was past his best but he defied them all. A brilliant moment and thoroughly deserved for the best sprinter of his generation.

Chris Froome, Mark Cavendish, Sir Bradley Wiggins, the Kennys: Britain's big names all had a stellar 2016.

On the road, Froome ran up a mountain on his way to a third Tour de France victory while Cavendish's four stage wins in the race took him to second on the all-time list, and earned him a first yellow jersey.

Froome went on to win time trial bronze at the Rio Olympics - a race won by retiring Swiss legend Fabian Cancellara.

Cavendish went one better, claiming silver on the track in the omnium, to win his first Olympic medal. They were two of 12 (six golds) won by Team GB.

Jason Kenny won three titles to quietly join Sir Chris Hoy on top of the British medal table with six golds and one silver, while Wiggins, who won the madison world title earlier in the year with Cavendish, signed off with another team pursuit gold to take his Olympic tally to a GB record eight.

Kenny's then fiance, and now wife, Laura picked up two golds to become the first British woman to win four Olympic titles.
