Team GB’s performance in Rio was staggering and it was a privilege to be in Brazil leading our coverage as they surpassed their medal target.

But I have to say being in the Maracana Stadium at the final of the men’s football where Brazil took on 2014 World Cup nemesis Germany will live long in the memory.

There were so many people crammed into the Maracana, willing on the host nation. I felt nervous for them! And to witness the scenes as the stadium erupted when Neymar slotted in the winning penalty, was truly amazing!

Ian Thorpe, speaking on BBC Radio 5 live, has made a huge claim about Lifetime Achievement winner Michael Phelps, but we reckon it may well be justified: "We have the greatest athlete that’s ever walked the planet. If you look at the next equivalent athlete to him you need to double their medal haul."

Winner Andy Murray has just been asked on 5 live about wife Kim voting for third-placed Nick Skelton: "I’m hoping she was joking! I’ll speak to her when I'm off air and find out definitely.

"It’s my last day off before Christmas and I’m doing my Christmas shopping tonight so if she gives me the wrong answer she’s not getting anything.”

I was at London 2012 and saw time and time again how the home crowd got behind their athletes and it was the same in Rio, particularly for the likes of Brazilian swimmer Daniel Dias, the poster boy of the Games.

On the final evening of competition, he had two medal chances in the 100m freestyle and then in the last event of the entire swimming programme – the 4x100m medley relay.

As expected, Dias was roared on to his expected victory in the individual event and he was an emotional figure as he received his fourth gold medal – but his night’s work was not over yet.

Brazil had opted to start with Dias (their most impaired swimmer) and finish with their stronger ones. They knew that gold was out of reach but they were going to give their all for a medal.

By halfway, they were well adrift in last and it looked a lost cause, but they knew their strongest swimmers were still to come. As the comeback started, that was the cue for the crowd to get even louder and the noise level was unlike anything I had experienced before, even at 2012.

It didn’t matter that China and Ukraine won gold and silver, everyone else, Brazilians and non-Brazilians alike, were willing Brazil to get that bronze medal – and they did, ensuring the sport finished on a high and Dias finished with nine medals from an unforgettable home Games.

True to the nature of the Unsung Heroes, 2016 winner Marcellus Baz suggested his win should be shared with all the other volunteers who have not been recognised.

"I got asked before who I would have voted for and I said Alistair [Brownlee]," says Murray, who draws parallels between the Brownlee brothers and his own relationship with his brother Jamie. 

He adds: "What they do in their career is an extremely tough, hard physical sport but then at the end it isn’t just about the winning all of the time and I think that sometimes gets lost. That’s an important message."

Murray also reflected on his winning year, saying the Olympic final in which he triumphed over Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro was "probably the most special moment of the year because of the way the match was won". 

Remember this is also the year he won his second Wimbledon. An embarrassment of riches for the Scot in 2016.

Nick Skelton: "It is an honour to be standing there with so many great sportsmen and sportswomen.

"I think there were a few times where I was told by the surgeons not to ride again but I had a horse in the stable that I knew was promising so I found a surgeon in Europe that said yes and really that was the only answer I was looking for.

"To be in the top three shows that people are taking notice and it is a great accolade."

The most memorable moment of the year was for me a near-miss when Cue Card, on target for the £1m ‘Steeplechasing Triple Crown’ in the Cheltenham Gold Cup – having already won the Betfair Chase and the King George V1 Chase – dramatically fell at the third-last obstacle.

Following the bonus announcement by the Jockey Club, owner of the tracks where the three legs took place, there was plenty of head-shaking amongst those believing that if anyone scooped the huge pot, it would probably be one of the ‘usual suspects’, i.e. a big-name owner and/or a big-name trainer, who bank plenty already.

That Colin Tizzard and his family-run stable in rural Dorset, plus owner Jean Bishop, got the chance to aim at the million with one of jump racing’s most enduring and popular old warriors changed many minds and the support was palpable.

The sigh that went up as the fall shattered all the dreams was deafening. Happily, however, the horse and jockey Paddy Brennan were unscathed and, talk about living to fight another day, they’ve already won leg one this season.
