Motorbikes are in Jonathan Rea's blood (not literally).

The Northern Irishman secured the British 60cc motocross title at the age of 10 and claimed his first race in British Superbikes by 20.

    Now he's dominating the sport.

He became the first rider to clinch three successive World Superbike titles, triumphing with five of the season's 26 races remaining.

Rea went on to break Colin Edwards' 15-year-old record for the number of points scored in a season, ending on 556.

"This is a dream," he said. "This is my time and I have to savour the moment."

Asked about her sporting highlight of the year, she picks out the World Athletics Championships in London in August:

"It was great to be there as a spectator. To see Nafissatou Thiam win the heptahlon, she was absolutely out of this world."

Four-time Olympic and eight-time World champion Michael Johnson says he always enjoys coming to Sports Personality of the Year:

"I'm doing a little bit of presenting tonight then I can sit back and enjoy the show - it's a great one to come to."

How important does he feel winning SPOTY is to a contender?

"It goes across all sports and if you look at the history of it, all of the winners, there are some amazing names, so you want to have your name among those - if you're so lucky."

It's amazing what you can achieve in a day. Just ask swimmer Adam Peaty.

On the 25 July this year, the 22-year-old beat his own 50m world record once in the heats and again in the semi-finals at the World Aquatics Championships

His time of 25.95 seconds saw him become the first person to break 26 seconds in the event.

"I honestly can't believe it. I can't even think. I just went out there and did what I do," said Peaty at the time.

The Olympic champion went on to retain his 50m and 100m breaststroke titles in Budapest, and boasts the 10 fastest times in history in the 100m event.

Can he get even quicker in 2018? Watch this space.

Athletes have been named Sports Personality of the Year 17 times in the 63 years it has been awarded.

Formula 1 is the next most represented sport with seven.

All of the sports featured in the graphic above could add to their total tonight, while speed skating, taekwondo and Para-athletics could join the roll of honour.

Triumph over adversity appears to be Jonnie Peacock's mantra.

The 24-year-old suffered cramp in the warm-up before the T44 100m final at the World Para-athletics Championships in London this summer.

Undeterred, Peacock finished in 10.75 seconds to win his second world title.

"I came here for the world title and I'm thankful that I finished the race in one piece," he said after taking gold.

The two-time Paralympic champion, who had his right leg amputated below the knee as a five-year-old after contracting meningitis, also became the first disabled contestant to compete on Strictly Come Dancing.

He didn't win the glitterball trophy, but he did seem capture the nation's heart.

In the absence of Andy Murray from this year's list of nominees, it's fallen to Johanna Konta to fly the British tennis flag at Sports Personality.

Her incredible rise continued in 2017 when she became the first British woman to reach the Wimbledon singles semi-finals since Virginia Wade in 1978.

She lost to five-time champion Venus Williams, but claimed the number four spot in the world rankings, having been 150th at the start of 2015.

Konta also made the last eight of the Australian Open in January and won the Miami Open in April, beating Caroline Wozniacki in the final.

"I'm constantly looking to be more mentally strong and technically sound. I'm trying to leave no stone unturned," she says of her career trajectory.

    We think she means business.

Bradley Lowery, the little Sunderland fan who stole everyone's hearts this year, has been given the Helen Rollason award posthumously.

Gemma, the mum of Bradley - who died aged six from a rare form of cancer - has arrived on the red carpet.

"I'm so proud to be here to collect this on Bradley's behalf. It's amazing to know that even though he was my baby, the nation are still behind us. I can't believe he was even trending on Twitter this morning," she said.

"He was only here for six years and it was a hard six years but he did so much in that short time.

"He loved walking the red carpet at Sports Personality last year. He was a pro at media unlike me and his dad! I just hope we can keep it together tonight."
