She's really excited to open her Secret Santa and the anticipation pays off as she opens up a t-shirt with the words "I'M RETIRED" plastered across it.

At the bottom it says, "Have fun at work tomorrow!" and Lizzy is chuffed with it.

"Can I wear it now!?" she begs.

After winning his first the Tour de France in July, how hard did he find the whole experience?

"It's hard when you're at the back and have done a job before and it's hard when you're at the front racing for the win.

"But really it was incredible. For the years I've done it and then to win it, this year has been immense."

Ukrainian boxer Oleksandr Usyk enjoyed a brilliant year in which he became the undisputed cruiserweight champion of the year. Already the WBO champion, he started 2018 with a bang by taking the WBC belt off Latvia’s Mairis Briedis.

In July he travelled to Russia to face home favourite Murat Gassiev in Moscow but silenced a hostile crowd with a victory that gave him the WBA, IBF and The Ring Magazine belts.

Next in his sights was Tony Bellew in a bout where all four world titles were on the line for only the sixth occasion in men’s boxing history. His victory reaffirmed his status as one of the best boxers on the planet.

History maker Francesco Molinari had a 2018 that surpassed his wildest dreams as he won his first major and was instrumental in Europe’s Ryder Cup glory. After soaring up the world rankings thanks to winning the PGA Championship at Wentworth - the European Tour’s flagship event - and his maiden PGA Tour victory at the Quicken Loans Classic, he went on to become the first Italian major winner at the Open at Carnoustie.

As part of Europe’s Ryder Cup team, he led the charge as they thrashed the USA and he became the first European in the history of the tournament to win all five of his matches.

Ester Ledecka stunned the world in PyeongChang when she became the first woman ever to win a gold medal in two different sports at the Winter Olympics. The 22-year-old made history by competing in both skiing and snowboarding.

She then claimed a super-G victory that was so unexpected that the likes of American TV network NBC had already declared Austria’s Anna Veith the winner.

2018 was a fantastic year for the GB men’s and women’s wheelchair basketball teams.

The men won World Championship gold, beating old rivals and Paralympic champions USA in the decider.

But the women, so often the bridesmaids, also made a huge leap forward by reaching the final.

They were majestic in their semi-final win over Germany and while the Netherlands were too strong in the final, it was still their highest-ever position and is a great marker ahead of Tokyo 2020.

  14. 'It was down to the players'published at 17:41 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2018

Gareth Southgate stopped by for a chat earlier and reflected on England's World Cup penalty shoot-out win against Colombia in Russia.

Southgate says his own experience at Euro '96, when he missed a crucial spot-kick against Germany in the semi-finals, influenced his team talk:

"I felt quite calm going into it because I knew we'd prepared well but you can see at the end of it exactly what it meant.

"It definitely helps, it shapes you thinking. It's not luck it''s about execution - a skill under pressure - and we were as prepared as we could be.

"It was down to the players and they showed tremendous resolve and resilience to step up and get the job done."
