England’s penalty shoot-out win against Colombia turned the tide of their painful past history in the World Cup as Gareth Southgate’s side reached the last eight on a night of emotion and drama in Moscow.

In a searing atmosphere in front of a vast Colombian following, England’s hopes were in danger after Yerry Mina’s injury-time equaliser – only for sheer, unbridled joy when Eric Dier scored the decisive spot-kick after Jordan Pickford saved from Carlos Bacca.

An unforgettable night in an unforgettable summer.

"When you get to thirty people start saying 'you need to think about retiring' but for me, I jsut absolutely love it and keep going as long as I can."

    Tennis

Standing a few feet away from the US Open trophy which she had won, Naomi Osaka was crying.

Unfortunately they weren’t tears of triumph after claiming her first Grand Slam, more weeps of woe after the controversy which marred it.

Serena Williams’ row with umpire Carlos Ramos may have overshadowed one of the most dramatic Grand Slam finals we’ve ever seen, but it did not ruin the feeling that Osaka, a 21-year-old from Japan with a shy awkwardness off court contrasting with a steely determination on it, had announced herself as a potential successor to Queen Serena.

Billy Monger just brought the house down.” I asked him how it was going for him and his fellow presenters. “So far so good (nervous face)”!

I’ve always wondered how many calories I’d burn doing a stage of the Tour de France but after hearing Geraint Thomas expends on average 5,000 calories a day – just in training – I don’t think I’ll ever want to try. The Welshmen stocks up on grilled salmon, pasta, rice and chicken to meet his nutritional needs. He may be deprived of pizza but it’s not all bad for Thomas, who now lives in Monaco.
