  2. Standout moments of the sporting yearpublished at 21:28 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2020

    Men's football

    Emma Sanders
    BBC Sport reporter

It was a year which ended the years of waiting for some in football.

Liverpool won their first Premier League title in 30 years, Leeds United returned to the top flight for the first time in 16 years and Scotland ended a 23-year wait to qualify for the Euros.

They are without doubt the standout moments of the year but there were other highlights - Arsenal's FA Cup win under Mikel Arteta at Wembley, Sheffield United's inspiring league form, Marcus Rashford's selfless campaigning off the pitch and Bayern Munich's stunning Champions League victory.

Perhaps one of the biggest stories off the pitch was the fall-out between Lionel Messi and Barcelona, while the tragic death of Argentina legend Diego Maradona brings a sad end to the year.

All-in-all, it's been a whirlwind year for football but a memorable one, certainly.

And now a reminder that, yes, Scotland did it.

The enormity of it all may yet take a while to sink in, but after more than two decades of failure, the national team will grace a men's major tournament again.

  4. Nurmagomedov's numberspublished at 21:26 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2020

Russian Khabib Nurmagomedov 32, extended his perfect professional record to 29 wins with an emotional victory over interim champion Justin Gaethje in October.

The UFC lightweight champion fought just months after the death of his father, coach and mentor Abdulmanap.

Considered by some to be the greatest mixed martial arts fighter of all time, he retired straight after his victory.

Nurmagomedov's 29-0 record in MMA included 13 straight victories under the UFC banner.

He successfully defended his lightweight title on three occasions, and was seen as one of the most dominant athletes in MMA history.

Craig Wilson: Stuart Broad is class - he deserves this. He proved the selectors and the fans wrong. Class is permanent.

Becky Hill: You can't continually win what Lewis Hamilton has without being exceptional at what you do. The level of professionalism, of commitment, of skill, of passion, of ability, the endurance, race after race, year after year - the greatest ever driver in history.

Dan Forsh: Lewis Hamilton has of course got my vote tonight but being a big Lfc and snooker fan, I’d be more than happy to see Hendo or Ronnie take it.

'I've been passionate about what I do since I was five years old'published at 21:08 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2020

    BBC One

Lewis Hamilton speaking to BBC One: "I've been racing 27 years, it's been a long time, there were so many sacrifices for my family. Those last few laps building up to the world title and the dream becoming a reality, I thought about all my family gave and it bought out a lot of emotion.

"I couldn't have done it without a great group of people behind me. It's a collaboration - we have to raise the bar every year. I love what I do, I've been passionate about it since I was five years old. I'm already back in training and focusing on what I can do next year.

"F1 has never been a diverse sport and this year you've seen so many inspirational individuals, our sport shouldn't matter where you come from. We have to fight for gender equality and it shouldn't matter where you come from. We have to break the barriers down and it comes down to education."

Last but by no means least... Our final Sports Personality of the Year contender.

After being dropped for the opening match of the summer series against West Indies, Nottinghamshire fast bowler Stuart Broad returned for the final two Tests - both won by England - and took 16 wickets at an average of 10.93 to pass 500 for his career.

He is seventh in the list of all-time Test wicket-takers.

If 2020 will always be remembered for the way coronavirus affected the sporting world, then cricket - English cricket - should be recognised for the role it played in action returning.

The idea of sport taking place in a 'bio-secure bubble' seemed fanciful at first, but the way it was successfully executed by the English game provided not only a template for other cricketing nations, but also an example to other sports too.

There will always be gratitude to West Indies (men and women), Pakistan, Ireland and Australia for their willingness to tour amid a global pandemic and, to that extent, events on the field were of less consequence than most summers.

That did not prevent some stellar action, though. James Anderson's 600th Test wicket (pictured), Stuart Broad's 500th, another amazing Ireland run-chase to defeat England in a one-day international.

If those moments were not celebrated by a live crowd, Covid-19 should not dull the memory of the Women's T20 World Cup final, played in a different time when more than 86,000 fans - and Katy Perry - celebrated hosts Australia's victory at the MCG.

While the cricketing world has slowly started to turn again - a domestic programme completed in England, the IPL one of a number of T20 leagues to re-emerge - there is always the threat of disruption, as demonstrated by England's aborted tour of South Africa.

That will linger in a crowded 2021 that will conclude with a men's Twenty20 World Cup and men's and women's Ashes series down under.

It is in Australia where perhaps the most incredible action of 2020 took place, with India's capitulation to 38 all out not only historic, but ominous for the remainder of the four-Test series.
