  3. 'Individual accolades only come with team success'published at 21:49 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2023

    Mary Earps

Mary Earps has been speaking to media after being crowned Sports Personality of the Year.

“It feels pretty great off the back of a couple of really big years and 2023 has been wild in ways I couldn’t expect. I’m really, really grateful," Earps said.

“I feel like I always committed to myself that anything that came after that [tough] period would be a bonus. It hasn’t stopped yet and I’m just trying to make the most of everything that comes my way because when it stops you miss it.

“I would not be here without my team-mates with the Lionesses and at Manchester United because we’ve achieved some incredible things over the last couple of years.

"While individual accolades are great, they only come after team success. This is their trophy just as much as mine.”

During her acceptance speech, Mary Earps thanked her family and friends for helping her through "really not so great times".

BBC Sport at the Sports Personality of the Year Awards

Sir Kenny Dalglish, who won the Lifetime Achievement award, has just spoken to us after collecting his trophy.

"I always get emotional when we win and when we get a trophy," he said.

"The people that were on stage with me deserved to be there. We’ve won a few things in the past but it’s not an individual sport, it’s a collective. They deserve the accolade as well.

"It’s always nice to see them. It’s amazing how you click back in and you go way back to when you were playing. We’re very fortunate that we have a lot of happy memories."

On continuing his work with Liverpool as an executive director under Fenway Sports Group (FSG), he added: "FSG have been unbelievable with their investment on and off the pitch [at Liverpool]. They built a new stand, improved the Kop and the new Anfield Road End was frightening on Sunday.

"Wait until you see that stadium when it’s full... FSG have been tremendous."

    BBC One

Here are the thoughts of BBC Sport's Personality of the Year winner Mary Earps:

"First of all, I’m so humbled to be on a list of such incredible athletes. Sport is a fantastic thing where it brings the world together and it's been brilliant to listen to everyone's stories, so congratulations to you all.

"Thanks for voting for me everyone! I’m very honoured and humbled, as this is the ultimate all round sporting accolade. We’ve had an incredible couple of years but this is just wow.

"It’s not been the easiest journey and I wouldn't be here without my loved ones in my corner, who have been with me through the really not so great times.

"The last two years have been unbelievable, I’ve done more than I could have ever imagined. Thank you to my goalkeeping coaches, my team-mates and my coaches."

  18. Earps stars in England's run to World Cup finalpublished at 21:08 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2023

Mary Earps played every minute as England reached the World Cup final, conceding only four goals and keeping three clean sheets to win the competition's Golden Glove award.

The 30-year-old was also voted England Women's Player of the Year for 2022-2023, Fifa Best Women's Goalkeeper, and finished fifth in the voting for the Ballon d'Or award.

In domestic football, Earps claimed the Women's Super League Golden Glove for the 2022-23 season with Manchester United, having kept a record 14 clean sheets.

All that in a year after being part of England's Euro 2022 triumph, as the Lionesses won their first major trophy.

We'll get her reaction to being crowned BBC Sports Personality of the Year next.

Yes, you have voted Mary Earps as your BBC Sports Personality of the Year for 2023!

Earps becomes the second successive women's footballer to win the award after her Lionesses team-mate Beth Mead won the 2022 award.

She is also the third woman to win it in a row - the first time that has happened since the 1960s.

    Congratulations, Mary!
