"Flower power is back in Paris. Tomas Berdych can't quite match the floral print dress modelled by Agnieszka Radwanska earlier, but with white flowers on a blue background, he's doing his bit for the movement."

"Roger Federer has been through the media mangle and was on fine form, revealing that he cannot understand a word wife Mirka says when she speaks Slovak. The 2009 champion also gave short shrift to those who think Novak Djokovic might be the favourite this year ahead of eight-time winner Rafael Nadal.

"I don't know who's talking all the time, but Rafa is the favourite, and then Novak, and then the rest, you know," said the Swiss.

"It's very clear. But it doesn't matter who is the favourite or not. We will see in a few weeks. Really doesn't matter one bit."

  5. GAME, SET AND MATCHpublished at 14:43 British Summer Time 25 May 2014

Williams's feet not quite moving in unison as she drags a backhand long for 15-30. Again, poor movement from Williams as another wayward shot presents Lim with an easy point for two break points. Williams battles back to deuce, collects a match point but Lim responds with a brilliant crosscourt forehand winner and the crowd are baying for more. Encore!

Forehand into the tape from Williams. The crowd cheer and slowly clap in between the points. How ruthless is Lim? Not very as Williams's first serve comes to her rescue. The pair tease the crowd - deuce, then advantage, then a second match point before the game unravels to deuce again. Third match point: wasted. Fourth match point: wasted.

When will this game end? Two aces and two double faults so far from Williams. A fifth break point for Lim, but Williams ups the ante by dashing towards the net and ends the point with an overhead. A fifth match point comes Williams's way and... and... and... the first serve is long... the second serve is good and, finally, the match ends when Lim biffs a forehand long.

  6. Williams breakspublished at 14:32 British Summer Time 25 May 2014

First point to Williams but Lim responds with a deep forehand volley with leaves Williams flummoxed on the baseline. The crowd still cheering the Frenchwoman on, their enthusiasm unaffected by the scoreline.

Two break points Williams, though, but the top seeds balloons a forehand to squander one break point and another break point disappears, too, thanks to a beautiful backhand down the line from Lim. Third break point Williams. Third break point squandered. Ace Lim. Advantage Lim.

The 23-year-old attempts a drop shot, which is said to be her favourite shot, but miscues it and we're back to deuce. Williams then pounces on a weak second serve. Fourth break point Williams and this time Williams is clinical, returning with gusto, forcing Lim to net. The end is nigh.

Williams collects three points on the trot with ease. Actually, make that four as Williams punishes Lim for her timid returns with a nonchalant forehand winner. A hold to love. The result, you sense, is a foregone conclusion.

Lim is currently working at the Mouratoglou Academy where Williams's beau and coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, is the head honcho. The Frenchman said prior to this match, however, that there will be not torn loyalties - he will be rooting for Williams. A wise move. A 27th unforced error from Williams takes Lim to 40-30 and the 23-year-old wins her first game of the set thanks to a forehand into the tape from Williams.

  9. Postpublished at 14:17 British Summer Time 25 May 2014

A round of applause for Lim as a crafty forehand leaves Williams nearly doing the splits in the middle of the court, but it is the Frenchwoman's only flourish in a one-sided contest. A first ace of the match for Williams, a clench of the fist, and she is a point away from a handsome advantage, but Williams's backhand is her least reliable weapon and an error on that side means the game proceeds to deuce. So superior is the armoury at Williams's disposal, though, she can afford a few blips and Williams wraps up the game with a dazzling second serve.

Can Lim cling on to Williams's coattails and turn this match into a contest? Three break points suggest not. On the final point, Williams sends her opponent lunging towards the tramlines before ending Lim's hopes with a sparkling overhead volley. An early break.

With the match approaching its 45th minute, the yellow-shoed Williams nudges ahead with a straight-forward hold, ending the game with an unreturnable serve. Strangely, the top seed has yet to notch an ace in this match, but has accumulated 17 winners.

"Venus Williams - seeded 29 in Paris - sees off the threat of Swiss teenager Belinda Bencic more easily than many anticipated. The 2002 finalist wins 6-4 6-1."

  13. GAME AND FIRST SETpublished at 14:05 British Summer Time 25 May 2014

So, here we are at 15-15. The defending champion closing in on the first set. Williams still blowing hot and cold, though, her form fluctuating like a faulty thermometer. An ugly volley - long and wide - is followed by a rasping backhand winner into the middle of the court.

A stentorian roar from Williams as she reacts to that point. "Come on," she yells to herself as the scoreboard flips to 40-30. But two daft Williams backhands and Lim is at advantage, but the Frenchwoman doesn't know how to seal a deal and Williams takes the first set without being at her brilliant best.

  14. Postpublished at 13:58 British Summer Time 25 May 2014

Plenty of errors from the Williams racquet as she attempts to pulverise her opponent through brute force. Lim, understandably, on the ropes, her knees probably wanting to buckle, but the body and mind is so far holding firm.

Williams, on the run, biffs a forehand into the tramlines and once again a game goes to deuce. Oh - and a chance for Lim - she sprints forward... deep breaths... but the sight of Williams on the other side of the net is an intimidating one and Lim squanders a great chance, netting a backhand volley when she had Williams on the back foot.

Not many chances will come Lim's way and, as if to emphasise that point, Williams throws down a humdinger of a serve which Lim directs wide.

  15. Postpublished at 13:52 British Summer Time 25 May 2014

Lim reached a career-best ranking of number 138 in the world in March this year so is on somewhat of a high. Unfortunately, her achievements are dwarfed by her opponent, the 17-time grand slam champion and top seed.

A second serve ace reins Williams in at 30-30 and the crowd celebrate with an 'ole' as they watch Lim advance to 40-30. But Williams drags the game to deuce before Lim apologetically waves her racquet as a net cord bounces her way for advantage. A Williams forehand goes fractionally wide and Lim holds.

"Venus Williams takes the first set against 17 year old Swiss Belinda Bencic 6-4. The teenager has been earmarked for a big future after winning the girl's singles here in Paris and at Wimbledon last year but former world number one Williams's vastly greater experience of the big occasion has seen her take early control."

  17. Postpublished at 13:46 British Summer Time 25 May 2014

The opening two points go to Lim and the Frenchwoman pounces on a timid Williams second serve to earn a break point. Williams off the boil, but unforced errors from Lim lets her off the hook. A winning Williams backhand, followed by a wayward forehand from Lim on the next point, sees Williams over the line and the defending champion just about doing enough.

  18. Williams breakspublished at 13:41 British Summer Time 25 May 2014

Williams is making her 13th appearance at Roland Garros, while Lim is a wildcard who is appearing in the main draw for the first time. Indeed, the highest-ranked opponent Lim previously faced was world number 32 Zakopalova earlier on in the year. Lim on home ground but very much in foreign territory.

A grunt accompanies a menacing Williams backhand return, which allows her to draw level at 30-30. The crowd on Philippe Chatrier rooting for the underdog. Lim drags Williams towards the net with a drop shot, but Williams slides forward and ends the point with a fabulous backhand volley. Break point Williams, but a net cord bounces in Lim's favour and we return to deuce. Deuce. Advantage. Deuce. Second break point Williams and this time she grabs it, though she has the body language of a woman who has just missed the last bus home.

  19. Postpublished at 13:34 British Summer Time 25 May 2014

Lim sneaks in front, but is soon overpowered by the mighty Williams serve. A thumping forehand into the corner sees the defending champion hold to 30. Williams hasn't come out of the blocks like a greyhound, but perhaps conserving energy for the bigger battles which will follow is a sensible option.
