Lukas Lacko - who looks like a 70s throwback with his shoulder-length curly mane, bandana and questionable facial hair - won the toss and has opted to serve first, though it is Federer who wins the opening two points. The Slovakian, though, drags himself back into contention and wins the game with a serve out wide which Federer fails to return.

A cracking match is unfolding on Suzanne Lenglen between eighth seed Milos Raonic and one of the games up-and-coming talents, Nick Kyrgios. The young Australian lost the first set 6-3 but has taken the second set into a tie-break.

And so we approach the final week of May, the month with so many beginnings and endings. The domestic football season is nearly over, Jonny Wilkinson's career is almost done and gloriously dusted while the thick, fat rain cascading on the country suggests the best of the summer is behind us.

But, over in Paris, the French Open has only just begun, which means a fortnight of brilliant and dazzling tennis is upon us and our days will thankfully be filled by the strangely comforting sound of screeching and groaning and ball pinging off racquet. Ah, Grand Slam tennis, you have been missed.
