Williams has opted to wear a striking yellow and grey dress for this tournament, accompanied by yellow trainers. And the top seed's form so far in this match resembles her attire; a mix of the dazzling and, some would say, dull. Williams overcooks a forehand into the corner and the crowd cheer heartily for the home favourite as she holds with little trouble.

The warm-ups is over, the sun is playing hokey-cokey and drooping flags suggests there's a stillness in the air. Williams open with an unreturnable serve. A faulty backhand volley from Williams for 30-15, and Kim takes her opponent to 30-30. Slow claps from the French crowd. But Williams comes through, those unforced errors not hampering her progress, and it's a hold to 30 for the American.

    Serena Williams with Alize Lim

Alize Lim, external posted a selfie of herself with Serena Williams on Thursday night, before the pair knew they'd be facing each other in the first round. There's no sign of such camaraderie on the court today. The partying is over and Williams looks ready for business.

Our attention will soon turn to defending champion and top seed Serena Williams, who will take on home favourite Alize Lim. Many would predict a straight-sets win for the 17-time Grand Slam champion, but Williams did lose in the first round at Roland Garros back in 2012 and history can repeat itself, though unlikely on this occasion.

Federer returns to his chair and puts on a navy jacket before returning to the net to answer some questions. The smiling Swiss says he's satisfied with his performance and is content, adding that it is great to be back in Paris. It's all said in French, though, and unfortunately GCSE French only takes you so far in this world.

Ironic cheers from the crowd on Chatrier as Lacko draws level at 30-30 thanks to a winning forehand. Federer squanders one match point as his forehand grazes the net and bounces long, but more match points will come his way. Or will there?

Advantage Lacko, but Federer runs around to his forehand and Lacko nets a forehand for deuce. Guile from Lacko, though, who delicately places a backhand drop shot beyond Federer and he secures the game with little fuss.

Federer serving and volleying with aplomb and an ugly-looking screwed forehand return from Lacko allows the Swiss to hold to love. Federer a game away from winning this match.

A wincing Lacko looks skywards, perhaps hoping for some inspiration as he prepares to serve when a break point down. No help arrives for the Slovakian and he seems now to have given up the fight.

Federer untroubled on his own serve and, fittingly, adds further daylight between himself and his opponent, just when the sun decides to peek between the clouds.

Lacko clinging on, not quite ready to wave the white flat. A hold to love, but there's a sense of inevitability about this match and the hush of the crowd suggests they already know the outcome, and know there won't be a twist to this tale.

A hold to 30 for Federer, with Lacko gifting the game to the Swiss by failing to return a stinging serve. Lacko will probably be spending the rest of the week taking selfies with various Parisian landmarks in the background.

"Two of the four Federer twins were briefly in the house to watch Dad Roger ease his way very gently into his 16th consecutive French Open.

"We have seen the occasional serve and volley and the odd sliced forehand from the 2009 champion, who is not being remotely threatened by a man who has not won a match on clay for three years."

Lacko drinking in the last chance saloon. He has one final opportunity to make an impression on this match and starts the third set confidently, nudging 40-30 ahead on his serve with his third ace of the match.

At the other net of the net, though, is the greatest of the greats and the 17-time Grand Slam champion forces the game to deuce with an unstoppable driving forehand into the corner.

Poor Lacko. Poor, poor Lacko. Break point Federer but the fourth seed fails to turn the screw, a forehand drifting fractionally wide. But Lacko surrenders with a whimper - double fault - and it's the perfect start for Federer in this set.
