    Andy Murray's record against Rafael Nadal on clay stands at an understandable, but uninspiring, 0-5.

    He'll need all the fight and might that he showed today to overturn the Spaniard and join the most exclusive club in tennis.

    Andy Murray, following his five-set win over Gael Monfils: "It was very tough, me and Gael have known each other since we were 11 and I am very good friends with him, so it was very tough conditions to play against him.

    "It was very windy at the start. I started well and when the wind slowed he was very good and very aggressive. In the end I was just glad he started the fifth set badly."

    Just as Andy Murray gets his mojo back, Gael Monfils has vanished.

    The Frenchman gifts Andy Murray three points as the balls flies long and wide off his racquet under minimal pressure. He claws back to 30-40, but his jerky groundstrokes bubble to the fore again and Murray has a double break.

    Monfils is now the man asking for bad light.

    He finishes the game uppercutting fresh air in celebration after punching away a backhand volley for a break to 15.

    Andy Murray is teetering as he finds himself at the net at 15-30 and Gael Monfils has time to unload on the backhand.

    The Frenchman's purple patch suddenly runs dry though as nets with Murray desperately trying to make himself look big to cover the space.

    A backhand lob drops between the tramlines to give Murray 40-30 and Monfils strays long to allow a fine chance to slip away.

    The Frenchman swats away a final winner after a cat-and-mouse exchange at the net on break point and is just a game away from the fourth set.
