Gael Monfils will play all night to get the job done. He holds to love and Andy Murray looks like he has strolled into an elephant-trap of a match.

The French Open officials may not escape Court Philippe Chatrier with a full complement of limbs if they attempt to take the players off court before we are well past dusk.

  2. Monfils breakspublished at 20:09 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

Andy Murray clutches his left thigh after barely getting out out of the starting blocks in pursuit of a rocket return from Gael Monfils on the opening point. He is certainly not moving well when asked to chase on the backhand.

After looking eager to finish the match tonight midway through the second set, perhaps Murray wouldn't mind if bad light brought them off with the match undecided.

Scrap that. I think Murray would definitely take the free taxi back to his hotel right now. He plonks between the tramlines to give Monfils break point from deuce and then clumsily drifts long to surrender it.

Murray is hangdog, Monfils is top dog.

A fair few of the French crowd have headed out of Philippe Chatrier in search of rehydration, but they have picked a good time to recharge glasses. Gael Monfils holds comfortably.

By the time Rafael Nadal had finished tugging his headband in his top-to-toe pre-point wardrobe adjustment, Gael Monfils would have rattled off a half a game.

The only time the Frenchman pauses is for those chest-pounding, finger-jabbing celebration. He affords himself a little bit of that palaver after holding with an ace.

Over on Suzanne Lenglen, Rafael Nadal is showing why eight of the nine times he has turned up at the French Open he has left with the big shiny pot and winner's cheque.

The world number one wraps up a 26-minute third set against David Ferrer in a repeat of last year's final.

"It was an even set, but when he is level-pegging with a player like Monfils, Murray expects to come through. Monfils is an underachiever. He has the ability, but has perhaps been too keen to be a showman, rather than a tough competitor."

  11. Monfils wins the third setpublished at 19:52 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

If you are not a fan of the Roland Garros crowd cheering Andy Murray errors, you are not going to like this.

A Monfils forehand stays low as it skids across the baseline and Murray swipes only thin air with his attempted backhand. The Scot stares accusingly at the surface as the crowd hoot in delight. That brings up 15-30.

Murray fails to get enough top-spin bite, floating long to give Monfils 15-40 and two set points and that cranks the volume another couple of decibels.

Like one of Voldemort's dementors, Murray sucks the joy out of the locals, clambering back to within game point.

But like J.K Rowling's schoolboy wizard, Monfils prevails in the end, Murray prodding long.

And Monfils milks Philippe Chatrier for every last drop of acclaim.

"This is a crucial game in Murray's tournament, the advantage of finishing tonight could be considerable. There's probably only 40 minutes of light left."

Andy Murray has 0-15 and his supporters in the crowd dare to dream of a break and a knockout blow.

Those vanish in the puff left by an enormous forehand from Gael Monfils. The Frenchman middles one straight out of the sweetest of sweet-spots, sending the ball shaving the net cord and flashing away for a blurring winner. 40-15.

Another forehand, less power, but it makes up for it in craft, closes out the game for the Frenchman.

Andy Murray pushes long as he attempts to up the pace off his forehand wing and we rumble onto deuce. Danger lurks, particularly this late in the set. But Murray has played the clutch points well on his serve in this set and Monfils is battered flat by his hammerhead forehands.

Rafael Nadal noses ahead early in the third set with a double break. Might he be turning that tanker of a match round his way?

We have to pause proceedings for a minute or so while Gael Monfils exchanges knowing nods with his entourage after forcing an Andy Murray error for 40-30.

The crowd lap it up. Murray looks less excited, by quite a long streak. The Scot takes it to deuce but can't make any more impact on Monfils serve.

There is still a job to do here before Andy Murray can dig the 'Rafa' or 'Dave' file off the laptop and start doing his semi-final research.

He holds though to turn the spotlight back onto Gael Monfils.

"Nadal gives it some "Vamos!" on Lenglen as he levels things at one set all against Ferrer, and that match surely will not finish this evening. The question is whether Murray can finish off Monfils and give himself an advantage with a day off on Thursday."
