"I think this is the best I've seen Andy Murray play so far at the French Open. He is an amazing player, with such great anticipation. From the first point he has been on top of his game - energy, footwork and taking the ball early."

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga's 6-1 6-4 6-1 walloping at the hand of Novak Djokovic on Sunday left Court Philippe Chatrier as atmosphere-less as deep space.

This match is not as one-sided, but Andy Murray is firmly in the drivers' seat. The home crowd are keeping schtum in the back, but don't like the look of where this is heading.

  4. Murray breakspublished at 18:24 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

Hands as soft as a princess from Andy Murray as he lifts a delicate volleyed lob over the top of Gael Monfils to move to 15-30 and give the Gael Monfils serve a little shove.

It's wobbling. The Frenchman clumps into the net to give Murray 15-40 and two break points. Monfils's forehand has been playing up and he slaps a wild one between the tramlines to give Murray the edge, just as he did in the opener.

A rattlingly-quick hold to love from Andy Murray, making light of the blusts and gusts of wind, to kick-off the second set.

"That wasn't a bad effort on Gael Monfils's behalf. He got himself into the match and played more aggressive. It was unfortunate for him to lose his serve to lose the set. Andy will be very happy. Murray can't give him any opportunities to get inside the baseline, and he himself was well inside the baseline and into court."

  9. Murray wins first setpublished at 18:15 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

Andy Murray tip-toes up on Gael Monfils and swipes the set from nowhere.

A dipping forehand is too much for the Frenchman to deal with and his pick-up volley doesn't have enough pick-up to clear the net. Break, and indeed set, point Murray at 30-40.

Monfils sees that one off as a peppy serve is tanked into the net by Murray, but he can't escape on the next.

The Scot presses the net to force an error and move to advantage before pummelling away with his forehand, flirting outrageously with the lines, to convert.

Joel Newnham:, external Both players playing very safe. Monfils really believes he could win this, Murray aware that he could lose.

Peter Vaz:, external A lot of talk about how the wind favours Monfils ...yet Andy's first grand slam was won under even worse conditions

Andy Murray 'out-Monfs' his man at 30-0 up, scurrying and slicing, while running wide and deep, before Gael Monfils prods a forehand between the tramlines.

The shot is spraying from the Frenchman. In the very next rally he repeats the error and Murray keeps his nose ahead.

Gael Monfils injects a little drama into the game, leaking a couple of points from 40-0 up, but gets the show back on the road in time to tie up the game.

Andy Murray advances behind a big down-the-line forehand at 30-30, but his eyes widen as Gael Monfils runs down his drop volley with time and bounce to spare.

The Frenchman goes for a floating lob over Murray, but the Wimbledon champion leaps high to slam-dunk away a backhand volley and save himself from a sticky situation.

Monfils wobbles long to concede the game on the next point, but neither serve is looking entirely secure.

A gentleman in the front row is applauding like a show seal promised a sardine.

An Andy Murray error, a sublime stunner of a drop-shot from Gael Monfils and a big ace down the middle moves the hometown favourite to a swift 40-0.

Murray nibbles back two points, but that is all he is getting. Parity on the scoreboard, momentum swirling all over the place, and the home straight of this set is already intriguing.

  17. Monfils breakspublished at 17:54 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

He only needs the smallest spark to catch fire.

Gael Monfils is 15-30, but looks out of the next rally when Andy Murray plonks a forehand that should be a winner into the net. What could be 30-30, transforms to 15-40 and two break points for the Frenchman.

His countrymen in the crowd stir into life and the atmosphere is really crackling as Monfils whips a cross-court forehand away for a winner.

Holly Evans:, external What a blistering start for Andy Murray. His levels of attack and defensive work are so beautifully balanced.

Tim Arstall:, external Murray is storming away here, I don't think anyone expected this with the hostile atmosphere.

The home crowd are resorting to cheering Andy Murray's errors already. They have not had much else to get their teeth into.

Monfils's defence is legendary. All stretched sinews and massive mileage, but Murray is finding unguarded patches of clay as he works his man from corner to corner with raking groundstrokes as he gets to deuce.

Monfils survives to make his first mark on the board, but he is under the cosh.
