    Pat Cash

"We thought Rafa would go straight through this guy and improve on his form so far but credit to Kukushkin who has played some really good tennis."

Nadal tucks his hair behind his ear, bounces the ball a few times and then fires down a first serve which has Kukushkin scrambling. He then rattles off the next three points to seal the game - that's now 15 points in a row on serve for Nadal. Time of a tie-break.

    Players practise at Wimbledon

England's footballers could have done their Manaus acclimatisation at the All England Club rather than the Algarve. It is swelteringly humid under the bubble that covers the indoor practice courts. As soon as the rain breaks there is a rush for fresh air and the outdoor version...

"Nadal is not yet in the zone. He is not striking the ball as purely as he would like - just as he wasn't in the first set of his previous two matches. That's the beauty of Nadal. He just keeps plugging away and eventually that rhythm seems to come."

Kukushkin looked to be cruising at 40-0, but his first serve lets him down and Nadal wins the next two points to get a sniff of a chance. The 28-year-old could really do with a first serve now, and he gets it, Nadal stretching to retrieve it and though he gets something on it, the ball flies out of play. Kukushkin clenches his fist. Nadal to serve to stay in the set.

    Marion Bartoli
2013 Wimbledon champion on BBC Radio 5 live

"It's getting a lot warmer in there and the humidity levels go up so you have to adjust your drinks when you play under the roof. You need to drink more and add more salt to your drinks to replace what is lost through sweat, so you will see the players adding more sports drinks to their routine."

Kukushkin's unforced error count has risen to 10, compared to three for Nadal, but's also hit 13 winners to the Spaniard's six. After the struggles of his last service game, it's a smoother affair this time round, the 26-year-old holding the game to 15.

"The indoor practice courts also double up as the headquarters of the tournament transport service. Effectively the classiest taxi office in London, around 100 uniformed drivers sit awaiting orders over the public address system as cars are assigned to guests, players and VIPs on a giant whiteboard. All while some of the world's best sweat it out on the other side of the glass."

Nadal has his eye in on the Kukushkin serve in this game and piling the pressure on with some blistering returns. The game gets jammed at deuce for a while until a stellar rally reaches it's conclusion when Nadal nets after a stunning stretch backhand from Kukushkin.

  20. Rain stops play on Court Onepublished at 13:42 British Summer Time 28 June 2014

    Piers Newbery
    BBC Sport at Wimbledon

"Serena Williams is already in full fighting mode against Alize Cornet on Court One after a shaky start. Five errors and two double faults see the American face a break point before the rain arrives at 1-1, deuce, and she is nearly skittled over by the on-rushing groundstaff. Cornet beat Williams for the first time in Dubai earlier this year, and this one could be a real contest."
