A very impressive service game to love for Riske, the American charging to the net on the final point and forcing Sharapova into an overly ambitious passing shot which she sprays into the tramlines.

"There are not many players who play their best on the grass but Alison Riske is one of those players. She feels very comfortable on grass, she moves well on it and it took her a long while to get a win on the tour on a surface other than grass."

More ferocious hitting out on Centre Court. It's brutal. But the positives for Sharapova is that she's starting to make more balls. The Russian fires down an ace to bring up game point and then closes out the game with her third winner of the match.

Riske absorbs every heavy groundstroke throws at her, before swotting them away with aplomb. The American is taken to deuce, but she continues her aggressive approach and it pays off to consolidate the break. Sharapova takes some time to herself at the back of the court. She needs to kick into gear - and fast.

Riske has blasted out of the blocks, taking advantage of a double-fault, followed by a venomous forehand down the line, to bring up break point. The American is very much living up to her Twitter handle and the approach pays off as he forces Sharapova into an error. Riske breaks. Shocked faces all round Centre.

"I think this whole Wimbledon Maria has come in very relaxed. She is happy after winning the French Open and has settled in nicely here. When she gets the one-two combination going either from serve or return it is very hard to stop her."

Most of you will know Maria Sharapova - the reigning French Open champion who won the Wimbledon title 10 years ago, aged 17. You may know less about Alison Riske, the world number 44 from the US of A.

The 23-year-old has a best result of the third round at Wimbledon and has never been past the fourth round at any Grand Slam. Her Twitter handle is @Riske4rewards - which is exactly the kind of approach she'll need to take if she wants to stop the Sharapova juggernaut progressing to the fourth round.

Mike has been released to dip his fingers in some ice cold water so it's Lawrence back in the hot seat.

The Royal Box is completely deserted while only half the seats around the rest of Centre Court are full as Maria Sharapova and Alison Riske stride out. That'll change soon, I'm sure, though I noticed the queues for the bathroom were pretty lengthy on my way up to the live text box.

Rafael Nadal on BBC One: "He (Kukushkin) played very aggressive and I made a few mistakes with his second serve. I made some unforced errors. That took us to a tie-break and in that I didn't serve my best.

"The body is feeling fine. I finished all my matches player better than when started and that is very positive. I'm very happy to be in the second week after two years losing in the first and second rounds. I am fighting for every ball and playing to find right solutions in every game."

Some pretty healthy service stats for Team Nadal to muse over this evening.

Sixty-seven percent landed, 77% points won when he does.

He also clocked up a 93% success rate from his visits to the net, winning the point on 13 out of 14 forays.

"There are three or four segments to a Grand Slam, the first is to get through the first two matches and the second is to get into the second week and he has done that and you could see what it meant to him."

Rafael Nadal lobs a sweaty headband into the crowd where it is caught by a lad with Spanish flags painted on his face. Without a moment's hesitation, the lucky recipient stretches the headwear round his own bonce.

Nadal teases some fan behind his courtside chair, feinting to throw his freshly peeled shirt to them. Probably better he didn't. There was a collective feminine groan when he didn't throw it. There could have been blood on the floor if he had.

Mikhail Kukushkin leaves the scene with a glorious reminder of what used to be, swatting a magnificent angled winner to move to 15-30. Quite possibly the shot of the match.

No doubt about the man of the match though. After a stuttering start, Rafael Nadal has been purring. He salutes his final winner with a pumping fist.

Move along, nothing to see here.

The Centre Court crowd offer up only a smattering of apologetic applause as Rafael Nadal continues to disembowel Mikhail Kukushkin's game on Centre Court, moving to 0-40 and three break points.

The Kazakh steals a couple of points to make the spectators feel less like rubber-neckers, but the game ends with Nadal punching the air in celebration of another break.

I bet he pulled the legs off insects as a child.

Not often that the snappers tweak the lens to leave David Beckham as a foreground blur.

Andy Murray's former coach Miles Maclagan and mother Judy have sneaked into the Royal Box for a little reconnaissance on the defending champion's possible final opponent.

There were not a lot of weaknesses to add to the dossier in that game. The world number one whips away a particularly glorious winner at 30-15, the ball tracking the line all the way before touching down on the apex with the baseline.

Sophie: The French Open was a reminder that Nadal always goes to a different level in the latter matches of a Grand Slam. Can't help feeling these longer matches are actually helping him sharpen his grass game and confidence in preparation for a stellar second week!

Alice: Nadal seems to need going down a set to fire him up, then he gets going and takes off like a greyhound with the tenacity of a terrier.

Stuart from Eastbourne: Worked with Kukushkin at Eastbourne, nice guy, very quiet, but a fierce competitor!

"If I was ranking the top four on their form here, I would have to say Murray at one, he has been unbelievable so far. If Federer carries on like he has later then I would have him second, Djokovic third and Rafa fourth."
