"Great excitement in the BBC production office as Jimmy Connors blazes through the door fresh off the plane from the States.

"The great man looks tanned and toned in a sharp suit as he meets and greets before heading off to prepare for BBC commentary duty. Here's hoping for a front row seat when he first comes face to face with former arch-rival John McEnroe."

And as is by magic, Jimmy Connors is courtside with Sue Barker and Tim Henman to preview the next match on court, Novak Djokovic v Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

On winning under the Centre Court roof: "When it was outdoors I played very well and was in a good position but when we came indoors he was striking the ball better and serving better and I was dropping shorter. That meant there was a lot more running at the end because he was playing very well."

"Incredible performance from Andy, credit to Kevin Anderson because he played very well after the rain break but this is just what Andy needed."

    John McEnroe
Three-time Wimbledon singles champion on BBC TV

"Great tennis, Anderson stepped up and gave everything he could, it just wasn't good enough, and Andy was just too good for him."

Fistpump - multiple fistpumps - and Murray is delighted to have sewn that one up, just when it threatened to divert from the script. Anderson played well once he settled, but Murray had too much too early, and he's into the Wimbledon quarter-finals for the seventh consecutive year. Onwards we march, onwards to Wednesday...

  6. GAME, SET AND MATCHpublished at 18:56 British Summer Time 30 June 2014

Anderson, hurried, bunts a backhand long. Match point. First serve wide. Second kicking. Murray backhand drive. Anderson fetches. Murray backhand drive... winner!

  7. Postpublished at 18:54 British Summer Time 30 June 2014

Murray into the net with a forehand chance, 5-5. Ace out wide from Anderson, set point for the South African. Well well. Big serve from Murray, and relieved applause as Anderson's return flies off the frame towards deep midwicket.

Body serve from Anderson, Murray swerving from its path, hooking home the return. Anderson to the net, Murray on the whipping pass, makes it! 5-3. Great return from Anderson, 5-4. Work to be done...

  9. Postpublished at 18:49 British Summer Time 30 June 2014

Anderson driving Murray back, Murray slicing... into the net. Mini-break gone. Brilliant return, even better half-volley pick-up from Murray, 3-2. Big serve from Anderson, as you were.

  10. Postpublished at 18:47 British Summer Time 30 June 2014

Here we go. Anderson long off Murray's serve, 1-0. Murray long, 1-1. Flashing forehand on the run - you cracker, 2-1 Murray with a mini-break.

Here we go. Anderson, long with a forehand. 0-15. Lovely duel from the baseline and out wide, 15-15. Oh, lovely forehand, and that's arguably an even better volley - inside-outey, onto the line, and into the breaker we roll...

  12. Postpublished at 18:41 British Summer Time 30 June 2014

Just what the doctor ordered - rattling hold to 15, and Murray will have one more assault on the Anderson serve before the tie-break ticks round.

Now then. Can Murray pile the pressure on Anderson's lofty shoulders once again? Oh, fractionally wide with a dreamy cross-court forehand, Anderson with a rock-solid volley to cling on. Should we drift into a tie-break, there might yet be a twist in the plot...

  14. Murray v Andersonpublished at 18:35 British Summer Time 30 June 2014

    John McEnroe
Three-time Wimbledon singles champion on BBC TV

"There are only going to be a handful of chances for Anderson to beat players of the quality of Andy Murray and if you look back at a tape of this game then those missed returns are what has proved costly. He has not been able to put the pressure on Murray and keep it on him."

  15. Postpublished at 18:34 British Summer Time 30 June 2014

Pity poor Kevin Anderson. The beanpole South African has to fight for an age to avoid being broken, then sees Murray ease towards a hold in a flurry of forehands. Slight Murray wobble with a double fault, but a wide Anderson returns means the defending champion is only one game away from the last eight.

  16. Latest scorespublished at 18:33 British Summer Time 30 June 2014

Slight signs of a resumption in play on the outside court where the court covers are being deflated. The rain is holding off. For now.

If and when things get going again, the singles matches already under way stand as follows:

    Dimitrov 6-4 6-5 Mayer

    Radwanska 3-6 0-5 Makarova

As I type there are cheers for the arrival of some court coverers at their Court One stations.

Adam Todd:, external Murray's ability to win a point from a position where it looks over is unbelievable!!

  18. Postpublished at 18:29 British Summer Time 30 June 2014

Murray slavering at the prospect of a break here - passing chance down the line, cut off by Anderson as he moves smartly to his left. Big body serve, but Murray will lean from its path like a boxer evading a swinging hook and punch his reply onto the line. Break point, Murray in the point, backhand onto the tape and down. Deucers. Anderson, weary, goes long. Break point again, first serve long, second serve... clunked into the bottom of the net. Wasteful. Another opportunity now as Anderson's forehand eats tape; big serve out wide to Murray's backhand, backhand drive into the subsequent open spaces. Anderson thumping his forehand tram-wards again; fourth break point. First netted. Second in play - Anderson all heart, forcing Murray wide, Murray... nets. A fifth - lost with a lob just wide. Big serve, big serve, and that's gutsy from Anderson.

"Anderson's played good tennis since they came back, he's certainly been more attacking. He's been yelling and berating himself and has come up with some good tennis."

Anderson going on the attack, crushing forehands cross-court, but with the pace goes the accuracy - wide, wide, Murray with a curving ace down the middle to get his nose back in front.
