"It is hosing it down outside, so wet that the bowels of Centre Court are full with those sheltering from the rain. A few hardy, or foolish, souls remain on the Hill, faithful to the last. The sky is grey - no sign of a break in the clouds. We could be off for a while."

So here we go again, after a pause of just under half an hour. Murray struggling to land his first serve since the intermission, and an off-balance forehand pulled into the net after a ill-judged backhand slice offers up break points. First serve missed. Second serve pedestrian. Anderson into it - net cord, Murray on the back foot, and while he can reach it he can't flick it over the tape.

  3. Murray v Andersonpublished at 17:22 British Summer Time 30 June 2014

    Pat Cash
1987 Wimbledon champion on BBC Radio 5 live

"You look at the match-up and you would say where is Anderson going to hurt Murray. You would say his serve, because it is coming down from 6ft 8 but actually that is playing into Murray's hands because he gets it back, and then what."

  4. Murray v Andersonpublished at 17:22 British Summer Time 30 June 2014

    Richard Krajicek
1996 Wimbledon champion on BBC Radio 5 live

"Having the Wimbledon title is not going to make you relaxed. Murray is in a far higher class than me but sometimes when you have won a tournament it can mean you set the bar too high and you are not happy with the way you are playing. You always want more.

"Right now Andy Murray looks the most loose player and the most confident player at the tournament."

Who has the best serve in men's tennis, past or present?

Simon Garner:, external Best serve has to be Pete Sampras. His 1st serve was a weapon but it's his lethal 2nd serve that puts him ahead of the others.

They have been doing alright in the World Cup, but it has been a miserable Wimbledon fortnight for the United States.

Following the exit of John Isner at the hands of Feliciano Lopez, there are no American men or women in the round of 16 at Wimbledon for the first time since 1911.

Agnieszka Radawnska is saved by the weather.

The Pole is a game away from defeat. But it will take a major meltdown from Ekaterina Makarova to let it slip from here.

  9. Rain stops playpublished at 17:10 British Summer Time 30 June 2014

    Andrew Castle
Former British number one on BBC TV

"The players are not being wimps about this, the injuries you can get on a grass court can be severe, and grass gets greasy on the top."

  10. Roof being closed...published at 17:09 British Summer Time 30 June 2014

... which means Andy Murray and Kevin Anderson should be back on in around 10 minutes.

  11. Rain stops playpublished at 17:08 British Summer Time 30 June 2014

BBC Sport's Sam Sheringham on Court One

"Gasps and groans galore on Court One as play is suspended due to rain at the business end of the second set of this enthralling match. Dimitrov has the edge, but Mayer is more than holding his own against a player ranked 51 places above him.

"With their spotless whites and single-handed backhands, both players are offering a tantalising throwback to days of yore."

  12. Rain stops playpublished at 17:05 British Summer Time 30 June 2014

Alas, it's got a little heavier, and after a couple of experimental skids along the baseline, our umpire calls them off. No news yet as to whether the roof will be closed. I'll pass it on as soon as it happens, but it'll be at least 20 minutes. Sorry.

Murray crashing a forehand cross court, and he likes that one. Rain in the air again, and what a pick-up that is from the champ - all wrist and flick, and Anderson is left nailed to the floor out wide. He's flat-footed by another, flailing a backhand into the net again, and Murray has his second break. Which might be rather serendipitous timing - the rain is getting heavier...

  14. Murray v Andersonpublished at 16:59 British Summer Time 30 June 2014

    Tim Henman
Former British number one on BBC TV

"I think there is scope for Anderson to sneak into the net a bit more, be more aggressive, try to bring a different aspect to the match."

Well, well, well. The bottom of the women's draw could be about to open wide open. With second seed Li Na already eliminated, Agnieszka Radwanska is teetering on the edge, a set and a break down against Ekaterina Makarova.

Big serve out wide from Murray to Anderson's forehand side, and the South African is growing a little leg weary despite the hour mark only just ticking by.

  17. Murray v Andersonpublished at 16:56 British Summer Time 30 June 2014

    John McEnroe
Three-time Wimbledon singles champion on BBC TV

"That is a really deflating game for Anderson to lose, he put a lot into that but he is now a set and a break down. But he is playing better, and that is what he has to hang his hat on, but he has never reached a Grand Slam quarter-final and it sure does not look like it is going to happen now."

BBC Sport's Sam Sheringham on Court One

    Grigor DimitrovImage source, Getty Images

"Grigor Dimitrov is well-known for his grace and shot-making ability but he also has a pretty big serve. The 6 ft 3 ins Bulgarian fires a couple of rip-snorters to go 4-3 up in the second set with no breaks of serve as yet.

"Moments later, a cork pops just below me in the Court One crowd as a contented couple use the break between games to crack open a bottle of champagne. Aaah, the good life."

  19. Postpublished at 16:52 British Summer Time 30 June 2014

Oh, that's a stinker from Anderson, burying an overhead into the net from a metre away to offer up three break points. We've all been there. That's more like it from the big man, exploiting a lapse in concentration from Murray to fight his way back into it, and Murray is furious when he nets a forehand slice, almost thrashing the turf with his racquet but pulling out late. Sensible. Break points come and go - Anderson struggling with his serve, Murray angered as he misses the openings, but when Anderson lumbers to the net and forces his volley wide, the break is finally taken.

    Stephan Shemilt
    BBC Sport at Wimbledon

"'Andy, Andy, Andy!' 'Oi! Oi! Oi!' is the cry of celebration on the Hill. It's hardly rousing, but Kevin Anderson's threat is not sufficient to whip up a frenzy. In fact, some have seen enough. One set is all they need to know their man isn't troubled. There's exploring to be done."
