Nick Kyrgios after beating Rafael Nadal to reach the quarter-finals: "I was in a bit of a zone out there and didn't really notice the crowd. I was struggling a little on return but I worked my way into it and I served really well throughout, so am very happy.

"You have to believe that you can win the match from the start and I definitely did. I am playing really well on grass.

"I didn't know what to do when I won and so I turned to my family who have sacrificed everything for me to be here. I saw in an interview that my mum thought that Rafael Nadal was too good and that made me a little angry!"

"I've been hearing about this guy for years but it was stunning to see what he has done today to the world number one. Let him enjoy it but now it gets tricky.

"He absolutely believed he was going to win this match. He is acting to me like he can win the tournament. The last guy I saw like that was Boris Becker - the young teenager, with no fear whatsoever."

Centre Court is in a state of shock. Plenty have left the arena, but flashbulbs tell me that photos are being taken for the "I was there" moment.

First Lukas Rosol, then Steve Darcis, now Nick Kyrgios. What is it about players raising their game to defeat Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon? In only his second Grand Slam and his first Wimbledon, Kyrgios has reached the last eight where he will meet Milos Raonic tomorrow.

To repeat, the world number one has not lost to a player outside the top 100 since 1992. Kyrgios is the first teenager to defeat the world number one at a Grand Slam since Nadal himself beat Roger Federer at the 2005 French Open. Rafael Nadal has once again failed to reach the last eight at Wimbledon and is stunned by a lowly opponent for the third time in as many years.

"The crowd recognise the achievements of both guys and Nadal is as classy as ever as he waits for Kyrgios as they leave the court."

Won with an ace! Nick Kyrgios has beaten Rafael Nadal. The wildcard has beaten the world number one. The world number 144 has beaten the 14-time Grand Slam champion. Centre Court rises as one, Kyrgios raises both arms to the sky. Nadal sportingly waits for his conqueror, waving to the crowd, and then they are off. Nick Kyrgios is through to the Wimbledon quarter-finals and world tennis has a new star.

Silence. Let. Come to the net and fire a backhand into empty court. Three match points.

Nadal unable to get it back, then going long. 30-0.

Nadal at least keeps his end of the bargain, a short-tugging, face-touching hold to love. Now comes the biggest service game Nick Kyrgios's life. Centre Court roars. The world number 144 is serving for the match.

"People have been saying you need years to beat the top guys and reach the top - Kyrgios might just break the mould."

You know, he might only need eight swings of the racquet. One unreturnable, one 130mph ace. In fact, he may be best leaving it to the serves. The simplest of volleys into open court is netted. 30-30, but moving swiftly onwards with Nadal long. Wide from Spaniard, Aussie fans on their feet, the world number one on the point of no return.

"Nadal hasn't been able to connect with the ball as well as he would have wanted on a consistent basis. He needs to break back fast."

Nadal scratches around in the dirt that used to be grass, wiping sweat from his brow in between the points of a simple hold. This is not the game, though. What really matters is when the balls are in the pocket of Nick Kyrgios. Only eight more times he needs his serve to perform.

Plenty of folk enjoying this cracker on Henman Hill as well as on Centre Court.

"Nadal just looked down and you get the feeling that he may be thinking it just isn't his day. He battled to get it to one set all and you would think that then Kyrgios might show some signs of fatigue. But Nadal is now the more uncomfortable of the two out there. Kyrgios looks like he was born to it."

Kyrgios, by the way, has hit 35 aces. 35! Nadal, the best defender the world has ever seen, digs deep to force Kyrgios to net for 30-30, but when Kyrgios watches the ball on to the tramlines and follows up with a forehand winner, he moves to within two games of the biggest win of his life and a place in the Wimbledon quarter-finals.

Can you believe this? Another knifed backhand return has Kyrgios in control, applying pressure that is too much for Nadal to resist. When the ball drifts long, Kyrgios is leaping and screaming in delight. The unthinkable is now very, very thinkable.

Now then, what do we have here. Nadal wide, then a blistering forehand winner takes Kyrgios to 15-30 on the Nadal serve. A Spanish response? Yep, complete with fist pump, then Nadal produces a winner of his own just as the final slice of sunlight disappears. A wonderful stop-return has Nadal on the run, and a backhand cross court gives Kyrgios break point.
