    Judy Murray
Great Britain Fed Cup captain on BBC Radio 5 live

"That was a really tense first set, it will be interesting to see what happens now, will Lucie Safarova be energised by how close she came or will she sink into herself. You could feel the relief from Kvitova after securing that set, she really wants this win."

  2. GAME AND FIRST SETpublished at 14:00 British Summer Time 3 July 2014

Not much between these two, but experience pays off for Kvitova who clenches her fist and lets out a roar to the delight of her crew in the players' box after hitting a forehand winner to clinch the set.

  3. Tie-break updatepublished at 13:59 British Summer Time 3 July 2014

It's nip and tuck, with both players struggling to hold serve. But Safarova rattles off two points in a row to level things up at 6-6. This tie-break is finely poised.

  4. Tie-break updatepublished at 13:56 British Summer Time 3 July 2014

Safarova is the first to blink in the tie-break, the Czech 23rd seed going a mini-break down to trail 4-2 at the change over. It's first to seven points - or two ahead if it's 6-6.

"Court number eight, girls' singles. Ball shanked in to the walkway, almost clonking an unsuspecting blue-shirted chap on the head. He picks it up, thinks about pocketing it, then gets a call from the chair umpire. He has to walk all around the outside of the court to return it to a ball boy."

Smart serving from Kvitova, going for the angles to drag Safarova out wide to leave an empty court to hit into. The 2011 champion's resolve is impressive and she eases to 40-15. A double fault follows, but a heavy second serve is too good and Safarova hits long. Tie-break anyone?

  7. Postpublished at 13:49 British Summer Time 3 July 2014

A sniff of pressure for Safarova as a backhand error sees her hauled back to 30-30, but she deals with it so well, firing two successive forehand winners to close out the game.

    Judy Murray
Great Britain Fed Cup captain on BBC Radio 5 live

"I have seen a lot of Lucie Safarova because she is the same age as Andy so they came through juniors together. She has always threatened to be a top top player but she has always wobbled when she has got close to the big occasions and the big scalps.

"Nerves always got the better of her but maybe now she is older she is coping with it all better. She is putting a lot of pressure on Petra now and she has a great opportunity here."

  9. Postpublished at 13:47 British Summer Time 3 July 2014

Kvitova soaks up the pressure of having to serve to stay in the set by holding with ease.

    Wimbledon Centre Court

"You could have a great day at Wimbledon without seeing a single ball struck. The All England Club is a sort of sporting theme park, full of sights to see for those that have made the pilgrimage. Centre Court is obviously the main attraction, pictured here from behind Court 12. The scoreboards and foliage are familiar enough, but the roof shimmering in the sunshine is still pretty special."

Safarova really has settled into this match well, after losing serve in that opening game. She looks very comfortable out there and is in complete control on her serve as she sails through to love.

Good hold for Kvitova, the 2011 champion cruising through to 15 with some good serving and deep hitting.

"It is really impressive how Safarova can absorb the power from Kvitova. She is really up for the task and it is very impressive. It might help that she is 27 and has been through a lot in her career already."

Someone in row three has to take evasive action as a Kvitova return ricochets off the net and into the crowd. The next point is much cleaner, though, with Safarova turning defence into attack with a wonderful forehand cross court winner. She went big there - and it paid off. Safarova's dad is on his feet applauding as she holds.

    Tom Fordyce
    Chief sports writer at Wimbledon

"Belter of a summer's afternoon on Centre, a day for freckles and factor 30. Safarova dealing with the heat of Kvitova's groundstrokes well too, and the champion of 2011 is not breezing this as many thought she might."

"Safarova's record at Wimbledon has been nothing to write home about up to now. Not only that, she hasn't gone deep in any of the other majors either."

    Laura Robson
Injured British number two on BBC Radio 5 live

"There is a Youtube video of when Kvitova won this tournament made up of all her winners and I think it is about 25 minutes long, some of her shots were absolutely obscene. She really can be unplayable but it's about finding that form and knowing when to go for it and not go for it too much."

"If the ball boys are required to maintain stony-faced diligence, the court coverers have taken it upon themselves to break that concentration. A group of rag-tag shade-wearing tarpaulin tuggers, pretty confident they aren't going to have much to do today, whisper away to one of the girls standing to attention. Finally they are rewarded with a hint of a grin and they whoop in delight. Teenage kicks."

Comedy of errors at 15-15 as Kvitova hits a poorly executed drop shot, which sits up ready for Safarova to put away, only for the Czech to dump it in the net. However, Safarova, the 23rd seed, battles back with some accurate serving to hold serve and take the lead for the first time in the match.
