  1. Post update

Andy Murray's next opponent is Germany's Matthias Bachinger, who surprisingly beat Radek Stepanek 6-3 6-2 6-2. The 6ft 2in right-hander is playing just his second US Open but didn't let inexperience hinder him against the veteran Czech.

Murray and Bachinger will take to the court on Wednesday. It's time for us to end this live text commentary, let the world's best tennis players play in peace. Thanks, as always, for your contributions. Until tomorrow...

  2. Latest results

One Briton departs and another appears. Johanna Konta is about to start her first-round match with Israel's Shahar Peer on Court 11.

The pair had to wait a while as Julien Benneteau's tie with compatriot Benoit Paire turned into a five-setter. The unseeded Paire was a 7-6 (7-4) 5-7 6-4 4-6 6-4 winner.

On Arthur Ashe, Venus Williams has failed to serve out for the match, which gives Kimiko Date-Kruum hope at 5-3 in the third.

  3. Match stats

    Murray 6-3 7-6 (8-6) 1-6 7-5 Haase

The serve was a problem for Murray as cramp set in during the third set. He won 60% of points on his first serve and 51% on his second serve - averaging 100mph and 82mph on his first and second serve respectively.

    Russell Fuller

BBC tennis correspondent at Flushing Meadows

"I can't really remember anybody else being affected by injury like that. What is it down to? There's no question mark about his fitness, it was hugely surprising. It leads you to believe tension played a part but we will hopefully get some answers from Murray but it's even harder to be optimistic about his chances after that first round match."

  5. Post update

    Nick Bollettieri

American tennis coach on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

"We have to compliment Andy Murray, he didn't moan and groan, he didn't make excuses but let's also say the mind of Haase was disturbed. He thought he had the match but he fell apart mentally."

  6. Post update

Murray and Haase embrace at the net, with the Scot apologising to his opponent about his injury.

"My quads were cramping and I started to get it in my forearms," Murray tells Sky Sports.

"I didn't know what to do, whether to conserve energy or try to finish it in three sets. I just tried to play without using my legs much. These Slams are physically challenging, I need to work out why that happened today because it shouldn't happen after an hour and 45 minutes, even though it was hot."

  7. Post update

    David Law

BBC Radio 5 live sports extra commentator

"I think a lot of tennis players would have said it was an injury and got a trainer on but Andy Murray is a fair player and he knows cramp is not an injury."

  8. Game, set and match

    Murray 6-3 7-6 (8-6) 1-6 7-5 Haase

"Make my day," says Haase as he superbly returns to draw level at 30-30, twirling his pistol in his hand, chewing on a toothpick. Murray thought he had done the hard part, breaking Haase in the previous game, but he must now prepare for another showdown. Murray saves two break points - Haase netting a thunderous Murray forehand for deuce.

A third break point to Haase... Murray stretching the left shoulder before launching the second serve.... and it's a clean winner from Murray! Deuce! And minutes after we were preparing to talk about the Scot's demise, Murray has match point and victory is his when a Haase forehand dribbles towards the net.

  9. Post update

    *Murray 6-3 7-6 (8-6) 1-6 6-5 Haase

Haase performing like a man who thought he had killed off his enemy with one debilitating punch after another, only to see him crawl back while his back was turned. Murray wiping the spittle away with the back of his hand and begging for more. The Scot collects two break points, wastes one but grabs the second with a wonderful return. "Is that all you've got, punk," Murray says. (He doesn't, but you get my drift).

"The mind of Haase is bewildered. He doesn't know what to make of this."

  13. Post update

    Murray 6-3 7-6 (8-6) 1-6 5-5 Haase

An 83mph second serve from Murray is good enough to outwit Haase for the opening point. The Scot dragging Haase from tramline to tramline and, without having to move from the middle of the baseline, the Brit passes teh Dutchman with a canny forehand. An improbably 40-0 lead for the Scot, though Haase is back in contention at 40-30 - a 75mph second serve perhaps a touch optimistic from Murray. He comes through the test though and Murray, the great thinker, is back from the brink.

  14. Murray breaks

    Murray 6-3 7-6 (8-6) 1-6 4-5 Haase*

An ace takes Haase to 30-30, but Murray digs deep into his reserves of energy. The fuel gauge might be low but the Scotsman can still produce a dazzling winner into the corner. What? A double faults? Haase double fault and Murray's alive! He's alive!

  16. Haase breaks

    Murray 6-3 7-6 (8-6) 1-6 3-5 Haase*

These two opponents performing like out-of-condition old-time heavyweights. The pace has been slowed down, they're slugging it out with one hopeful hit after another. It's painful to watch. Everything happening as if it were in slow-motion. Pride is preventing them from crumbling. But Haase is the stronger of the two and Murray squanders an opportunity to level. It's the Dutchman who will serve for the set.

  17. Post update

    Nick Bollettieri

American tennis coach on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

"Sometimes tension can make you freeze up as well, you lose flexibility. I don't believe it's the weather. He says he is in the best shape he has ever been in. He is smiling out there, who knows, maybe he is being coy? Andy is almost like a poker player out there."

  18. Murray breaks

    *Murray 6-3 7-6 (8-6) 1-6 3-4 Haase

A series of errors from Haase - a double fault, an overcooked overhead -and Murray is gifted a break point. "Come on, Andy," yells a fan as if he were hailing a cab. The Dutchman unaffected - a forehand winner for deuce. But Murray gets a second chance - second break point if you wish - but pushes his crosscourt volley wide.

A monstrous winning return from Murray, but the wincing former US Open champion immediately grabs his quad and then stretches his shoulder. Murray out of sorts but has enough to win this game on one leg.

  19. Post update

Murray wins a game! He wins a game! Murray's serves have slowed to mobility-scooter pace, hovering around the 115mph-mark, but that is quick enough to get the better of Haase in this game.

Elsewhere, Ireland's James McGee takes the first set 6-4 against Aleksandr Nedovyesov.

    *Murray 6-3 7-6 (8-6) 1-6 0-3 Haase

The pendulum swung in Haase's favour some time ago and the Dutchman firing across aces which Murray cannot respond to. The world number 70 wins his ninth consecutive game and at the changeover Murray places a towel over his face.

  26. Post update

    Nick Bollettieri

"My assessment is Murray is not right physically. If he loses this game here it is going to be very, very serious. I am surprised he hasn't called for the trainer though."

  27. Haase breaks

    Murray 6-3 7-6 (8-6) 1-6 0-2 Haase*

Andy Murray of Britain serves to Robin Haase of the Netherlands

Murray loses the opening two points but somehow, in spite of his feeble serves, the Scot levels at 30-30 before nudging ahead thanks to a deep volley from the net. Haase punishing the Murray serve, given oodles of time to produce a bullet of a return. Break point. Murray crumbling. Physically he's not right. The Brit is suffering.

"There is something wrong here. Murray's first service game will tell us a lot."

  29. Post update

    *Murray 6-3 7-6 (8-6) 1-6 0-1 Haase

Murray was rubbing his right quad during the changeover and placing a bag of ice on his overheated legs and neck, but the trainer did not appear. Will Haase take heart from seeing his opponent wounded? Two aces on the trot - his 10th and 11th of the match - eases the Dutchman to 40-15, but Murray responds with a nonchalant drop volley at the net. The Scot opts to come forward once again, but this time he's beaten by a Haase forehand winner.

  30. Post update

    Gigi Salmon

"Andy Murray is trying to find ice but they haven't got any and you could hear him say he needs it now. There's definitely something wrong there."

  31. Game and third set

    Murray 6-3 7-6 (8-6) 1-6 Haase*

A change of shirt for Murray but not a change of fortune as the white-shirted Scot tamely allows the Dutchman to win the set. Murray stretching during the changeover. All is not right in Murray's world and now he's gesticulating to the umpire.

  32. Post update

    *Murray 6-3 7-6 (8-6) 1-5 Haase

Murray recently let winning positions slip when losing to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Roger Federer but Haase is no Tsonga, and he's certainly no Federer. Murray, though, seems to have waved the white flag for this set and the Dutchman holds to 15.

  33. Post update

"It looks like something's wrong with Andy. There's no energy at all."

  34. Haase breaks

    Murray 6-3 7-6 (8-6) 1-4 Haase*

Murray collects two points easily, but is reined in to 30-30 as Murray, in no man's land, is caught looking statuesque at the net. The Scot far from his best, but hangs on to save a break point.

But he is quickly on the ropes again, screwing a backhand wide to gift Haase a second break point and the sun seems to have sapped Murray's energy. The Scot offers no resistance and Haase takes charge of this set.

  35. Post update

    *Murray 6-3 7-6 (8-6) 1-3 Haase

An elderly gentleman slowly makes his way up the vertigo-inducing steps before the start of this third game. He needs to up his tempo if he is to take his seat before Haase launches his crackerjack serves towards Murray. The Scot needs to up the ante, too, and he does so by dragging the game to deuce.

Andy Murray of Great Britain reacts

Haase goes long to present Murray with a break point but the 2013 Wimbledon champion carelessly allows his opponent to wriggle off the hook.

A turbo-charged second serve from Haase for deuce and Murray can do little but to net his forehand return on the follow-up.

BBC Radio 5 live sports extra commentator

"There are tennis players in this draw who will look at the way Andy Murray is hitting his second serve and think, 'I'll lap that up no problem.' I'm almost wondering if there's something wrong with him. He needs to figure out a way to get the rhythm going."

  37. Haase breaks

    Murray 6-3 7-6 (8-6) 1-2 Haase*

A fan shows his support for Scotland's Andy Murray

Murray sweating like a racehorse as the rallies lengthen. The Scot faltering again when ahead, and Haase squanders a fine opportunity at break point. Cool and crisp from Haase from the baseline, sending Murray back and forth, before earning a second break point thanks to a well-worked forehand winner.

Opportunities come. Opportunities go. Advantage. Deuce. Murray instinctively touches his ribs as he watches a Haase winner fly by for deuce. Third break point Haase. Murray wrong-foots his rival with a deep volley from the net.

Fourth break point. Oof! Haase wouldn't have reached that Murray backhand had he started chasing yesterday. Deuce. Fifth break point. Murray wide. Murray broken.

Back on the court, Murray has been reined in from 40-15 to deuce and the Scot's shoulders slump a little lower with every point conceded. The two-time Grand Slam champion saves break point - and comes through an iffy service game as Haase plonks a backhand into the tape.

Haase closes the gap. From 4-2 to 5-4 and questions are being asked of a wincing Murray. But Haase goes long to present the Scot with two set points - but Murray is hauled in once more and the Scot embarks on a monologue. A swing of the hips from Haase, a forehand down the line and the Dutchman roars - it's 6-6, Murray slaps his racquet on the hard court and the boisterous crowd sing "let's go, Robin".

A hush as Haase prepares to serve for the set... The Dutchman grunts and groans... Murray gambles like a high-roller and the reward is big - HawkEye shows the Scot kissed the line for set point. Bravo! Some wizardry from Murray as he beats Haase with a razzle-dazzle of a forehand. A celebratory fist-pump to boot as he levels at 1-1. Perhaps Murray's brilliance has intimidated his opponent because Haase timidly nets for 3-1 and is then undone by another jaw-droppingly good Murray winner. Last summer Murray became the first British man to win Wimbledon in 77 years, but the 27-year-old has not reached a final since then.

There have been two major upheavals in his career since that heady Sunday afternoon in SW19 - back surgery last September and a split with coach Ivan Lendl in March.

This is a Murray we were familiar with a few years ago - a set full of ups and downs, opportunities for his opponent, a mixture of mistakes and brilliant winners. There are a number of empty seats on Louis Armstrong, but the majority of those who have turned up seem to be cheering for Murray. The crowd favourite brings up game point with an ace and stylishly holds - taking inspiration from the NBA's ballers by floating into the air and unleashing an angry volley.

"Haase is looking a little bit more confident now. He does have some thunderous power in his groundstrokes, but he's a little inconsistent. Murray's standing right back with the line judges at the moment, way behind the baseline."

    *Murray 4-2 Haase

No-one in this office truly knows the real Robin Haase, being that there has been no contact or communication with the Dutchman. But what I can tell you is that he's ranked 70th in the world, is 27 years old, and is a right-hander - even though he is actually left handed.

That break of serve was the nerve-easer that the Dutchman needed and he's proving to be more of a contender in this game, getting the better of Murray in a lengthy baseline rally for a 30-15 lead. But, having typed that, Haase double faults for 30-30. Errors from both players as the game progresses to deuce, but Haase eases to advantage with an ace and the game concludes with a faulty Murray forehand.

"Ooh" sing some in the crowd, pantomime-style, as Haase grabs two break points. A double fault and an iffy challenge proving to be Murray's downfall as he goes through one of his dips. The British number one trudges back to his seat during the changeover. He's still in control but there could be trouble ahead.

"Body language tells you everything from Haase - his shoulders are slumped and his eyebrows are raised. He's got to get himself on the board quickly, otherwise this could run away from him quickly. Murray is in a perfect position."

  78. Murray breaks

    *Murray 4-0 Haase

Murray nicks the opening two points but Haase stops the rot with a serve-volley. Murray, shoulders slumped as he comes unstuck at the net for 30-30 and this is as close as the Dutchman has got in these opening four games. But Haase approaches the net once more as confidently as a hippopotamus on ice, and Murray passes him for a break point.

To deuce we go, however.... Haase challenges a Murray forehand, which replays show hit the line so it's a second break point for the Scot. But Murray needs a third break point before sealing the deal - Haase plonking a backhand into the net to gift the Scot a perfect start.

"I'll give Andy a tip - he needs to get in close to the baseline. Haase is standing 10 feet behind. He needs some gimme points from his first serves and some defensive returns."

"Haase has a bit of a dilemma here - the longer the points go on, the more it favours Andy Murray. Murray's got to play aggressively to get back to where he was last year. He moves so well - his footwork and balance is among the best on the Tour today."

  82. Murray breaks Haase

    *Murray 2-0 Haase

Opening point to Murray and the British number one builds on that early momentum, scurrying along the baseline until his opponent nets. Haase, the world number 70, attempting to add variety to his play - coming into the net - but he nets and, suddenly, a break of serve seems inevitable. Murray with a crafty lob over his opponent's head and it's a break to love for the Scot.

    Murray 1-0 Haase*

Murray is on court a tad earlier than expected, but Haase hasn't been caught snoozing, winning two of the opening three points for a 15-30 lead. It's a beautiful afternoon in Queens and Murray has gone native, wearing a baseball cap to keep the sun's rays from his eyes.

The Scot steps in to screw a backhand volley beyond his opponent for a 40-30 lead and seals the deal with a punchy first serve down the 'T' which the Dutchman returns into the net.
