Boris Becker in the players' box, with hair both swept back off his forehead and tousled by a mid-afternoon zephyr, with the look of a slightly sunburned Emperor penguin. Hold from his charge Djoko, and we have a repeat in this second set of the first set denouement: the German needing to hold both nerve and serve.

Serena Williams saves three break points in the fifth game to keep herself a break to the good in the second set against Russian qualifier Margarita Gasparyan.

The American top seed is having to be nursed through this match though. Her coach Patrick Mouratoglou and camp are all up on their feet to congratulate their charge and reassure her that she is still doing the business,

"Djokovic has lost to only three players in the first six months of 2015. There had been talk of him being able to win all four Grand Slams this year, but that evaporated in Paris of course. He looks fully reset now, however."

Twinkle toes from Kohlschreiber on the baseline to readjust his body and laser a backhand down the line, and even Djokovic applauds that one. Court open for Novak at 30-30, but he snatches at it and finds only the net. Grimace, dab of forehand with sweatband.

"What a remarkable set and what a remarkable effort from Liam Broady. He has played a lot of good tennis. Broady takes a sip of his drink while Marinko Matosevic sits with his head buried in his towel. I am not going to begin to imagine what thoughts are going on under that.

"This is very exciting. Matosevic completely looks out of things, the body language looks poor."

"That double break that Liam Broady squandered? He's only gone and nabbed it!

"And that means the fourth set done and dusted, in Broady's favour, as the match time ticks past two and a half hours.

"The world number 181 from Stockport holds to take this thriller into a deciding set.

"Those packed inside an ecstatic court 18 had better have brought some suncream..."

And we are into a decider!

All British eyes swivel to court 18 as Liam Broady serves out for the fourth set against Australian Marinko Matosevic.

"This tough draw for Kohlschreiber follows a run of really difficult opening round matches for the German in recent tournaments. In fact, I think he might want to go and see the next draw take place for himself, just to make sure."

Eighth ace of the match thus far from Djokovic, and then a ninth. Kohlschreiber being forced to gamble more now on making smaller margins, and an ambitious forehand eats net to send him back to his chair with a slump to the shoulders.

There were 11 Australian men in the men's singles draw this year, that is the most since 2000.

It is not going too well for one of them though.

Thanasi Kokkinakis has been on the rough end of two tie-breaks and trails 24th seed Leonardo Mayer of Argentina 6-7 6-7 1-2.

Over on court two, the godfather figure to these young Aussie bucks, Lleyton Hewitt, has won the opening set against Jarkko Niemimen and leads 6-3 1-1.

Trouble now for Kohlers, teetering at deuce after a hurried backhand floats long. That's more like it - big first serve to go to advantage, ripping backhand onto the baseline as he opens up his body and times it away beautifully.

Djokovic with white sweatbands on both wrists, mid-calf socks and a steely look. Warm out there now, if not the 36 C forecast for later in the week, and the bookmakers' favourite keen to kick through this and get back in the cool of the locker-room as soon as he can.

Kohlschreiber warmed up for Wimbledon in mixed fashion, reaching the quarter-finals at Stuttgart but losing in the first round at Halle, albeit to that town's unofficial monarch, Roger Federer. He's alive again in this set, that poetic single-handed backhand tickling the scoreboard as well as pleasing the purists.

Kohlschreiber has never before beaten an opponent ranked number one in the world, not in seven attempts. Djoko finding his groove out there now too, and he holds again with ease.

Liam Broady is on a roll on court 18.

He is a break up on Marinko Matosevic in the fourth, continuing the long slog back after losing the first two sets.

"It's going to take a performance along the lines of Wawrinka in the French Open final to topple Djokovic here this year. There are some exciting names out there in the draw but I'd be very surprised if the winner came from outside the trio of Djokovic, Andy Murray and Roger Federer."
