"Kohlschreiber has won five titles on grass, so he knows his way around a grass court. As you can see in the early exchanges, he has some weapons but he really needs to get Djokovic on the back foot as quickly as he can."

Blue skies overhead, and the ball-boys will hoist a limited edition Wimbledon brolly over the players' heads at the changeover as emergency parasols. There's talk of a heatwave later this week. We shall see. Solid hold from Djokovic in what is his first match on grass since last year's final.

    Martina Navratilova
Nine-time Wimbledon singles champion on BBC One

"I have never seen the balls bounce this high, especially this early in the tournament. I think they have been rolling the courts really well."

"Clearly, Novak doesn't need match practice. Had it been a two-week break it would have been alright but a three-week break is a bit too much. I would feel a bit rusty. He must have had a hard time recovering (after the French Open).

"For Kohlschreiber to have a chance he needs to step it up, he won't win a slugging contest against Djokovic."

Kohlschreiber has beaten Djokovic in the past, but only once - on the clay at Roland Garros back in 2009. Since then Djokovic has seen him off on five consecutive occasions, But the German is enjoying himself out there - a hold to love, and the crowd are warming to the 2012 quarter-finalist.

"That's the hard work done for Andy Murray for the day - he has just finished what was a very long and pretty intense practice session in the sunshine - most players spend between 30 minutes and an hour on court but he was out there for nearly two.

"He seemed pleased with the way he was hitting the ball and did not hold much back as he dispatched British number four James Ward in a couple of sets. The real thing starts for the 2013 champion on Tuesday - that's when he plays world number 58 Mikhail Kukushkin in his first-round match."

    Jonathan Jurejko

"Someone check the court 18 decibel reader - there's just been an explosion of noise.

"That's because British wildcard Liam Broady has broken Aussie opponent Marinko Matosevic's serve at the first time of asking in the third set.

"Renewed hope among the home crowd after Broady then holds, with the two Aussies decked out in green and gold in the compact stand suddenly a little quieter."

    Impressive stuff from Nick Kyrgios.

The Australian has been suffering with an elbow injury that stopped him playing the warm-up events in Stuttgart and Nottingham and split with coach Todd Larkham a week ago.

But he has strolled through to the second round with a straight-sets win over Diego Schwartzman. Juan Monaco or Florian Mayer next up.

Uncharacteristic error from Novak, going long with a forehand, and as Kohlschreiber creams a delightful topspin backhand down the line he suddenly has a break-back point. Kicking serve, into the body - oh ja, super blocking backhand right onto the baseline, and Djokovic is left flat-footed. Popular move with the excited Centre Court patrons.

1987 Wimbledon champion on BBC Radio 5 live

"There are a few question marks over Djokovic. He hasn't played any matches coming into Wimbledon. But he is a professional and will be up to it. Kohlschreiber has got some good shots but just not enough firepower."

British wildcard Liam Broady is playing on court 18 - of course the scene of that marathon match between John Isner and Nicolas Mahut.

And while Broady might not need to be on court for over 11 hours, he does need to be out there for a good while yet if he wants to reach round two on his Slam singles debut.

"Kohlschreiber hasn't come out hitting the ball badly by any means, but he's already behind. When they get into those baseline rallies, for me there's only going to be one winner and that's Djokovic."

Gutsy from Philipp, battling back from 0-40 with some sweet strokes from that dreamy backhand of his. Chance to level this up, but with Djoko out wide on the forehand side he can't find the backhand line with his next shot, and the door slams shut. Fist-pump from the onlooking Boris in the players' box.

  15. Williams on courtpublished at 13:17 British Summer Time 29 June 2015

Five-time champion Serena Williams - last seen dragging herself and an apparent heavy cold to victory over Lucie Safarova in the French Open final - is out of her chair on Court One.

She has already had a hankie out and cleared the tubes. The pollen count is sky high today though.

She is playing Russian 20-year-old Margarita Gasparyan, who has never won a Tour level match but did not drop a set in three qualifying matches here.

Gasparyan found out she was drawn against Williams via a text from her doubles partner Alexandra Panova and thought she was being wound up.

Gasparyan looks to have come to terms with the challenge though. She has broken Williams in the first game of the match.

That's how to open your account - ace out wide from the number one seed. Talking of seeds, there's a small bird on the court, possibly looking for some well-tended sustenance, and Kohlschreiber halts Novak in his service motion to usher the avian invader away. Karma rewards him by allowing the champ to canter away with the rest of the game.

"Novak's defeat in the French Open final to Stan Wawrinka was a massive disappointment, but he'll have erased that from his memory now and will have put it behind him.

"Great champions find a way to come through adversity and Djokovic did just that 12 months ago here to win the tournament. For me, he's the champion of our sport and has taken the game to a new level. To be as dominant as he has become in an era where there are so many great players around is testament to just how good he is."

The ominous omen for the 31-year-old Kohlschreiber? Djokovic has not lost at a Grand Slam event to a player ranked as low as his opponent since losing to No. 34 Tommy Haas in 2009. The slight silver lining for the German journeyman? That too was at Wimbledon.

"Aussie, Aussie, Aussie. Oi! Oi! Oi!"

In an Ashes summer, we had better get used to the sounding of the crowing Australian.

A little flock of them suddenly pipe up on court 18 as Matosevic serves out to tie up the second set against Liam Broady.
