Andy Murray does a brilliant defensive job, returning a couple of Joao Sousa smashes from a distant Paris suburb, before the Portuguese finally blasts hard into the clay and into the stands in one bounce.

Sousa holds his serve. But he is having to sweat buckets and cover miles of clay to do so.

    Jitters?

Andy Murray appears to have cruise control engaged as he coasts to 40-0, but two double faults raise a few eyebrows and Joao Sousa's hopes of a pulling off a Houdini-scale escape.

Murray goes back to park-court tactics - just getting the ball over and in - and is able to nab the killer point to seal the set.

Joao Sousa is trying to keep it tight and cagey, loading his backhands with fizzing backspin.

But he can not draw the sting from Andy Murray's groundstrokes. The Scot takes his time, keeps his eye on the ball and injects a lethal dose of pace with a splattering forehand.

Sousa stretched all out of the shape as he leaks a second break.

And that is surely the set on toast.

"Murray is standing about 10 feet behind the baseline to receive the Sousa first serve, and hitting the ball about four feet inside the baseline on the second serve.

"It's been a continual process throughout his career but it's all about trying to find forward momentum these days, ideally kicking off the point with an attacking return. His weight of shot was enough to bully Nadal in Madrid two weeks ago, and so far it's too much for Sousa once again."

Hearing reports that Hollywood's man of the moment Bradley Cooper is in the house but apparently it's not him.

Sousa has served up some entertainment for his lookalike, however, taking a point off the Murray serve, but no more.

Andy Murray chases like a loopy labrador into the wings, scraping back a lost cause and making Sousa play just one more shot.

The Scot gives the crowd their money's worth keeping the rallies alive on his side. His determination takes him to deuce, but Sousa doggedly sees his way through.

All very well, but unless he can start to make some inroads into Murray's serve all the gritty holds are not going to save him in this opener.

Andy Murray rattles through another service game to love. Eight unanswered points off his tee-off so far.

He is moving and hitting aggressively and it suits him.

    Oh, you devil.

Joao Sousa deftly dusts a top-spinning lob over the top of an advancing Andy Murray, splashing down just inside the baseline for 40-30.

Sousa punches away a winner to make his first mark on the scoreboard in the next rally.

Well, that was a lot more straightforward.

A 12-minute opening game is followed up with a 90-second hold to love by Murray.

Lengthy tussles on Sousa's serve followed by blitzkrieg holds from Murray - i think that is the rhythm we are going to be dancing to today.

In case you missed it earlier in the day, fifth seed Caroline Wozniacki was knocked out of the tournament 6-4 7-6 (7-4) by Germany's Julia Goerges.

Goerges, ranked 72nd in the world, has won all three meetings between the pair on clay.

"I think especially on clay she has a way to make me feel like I'm not playing very well," Wozniacki said. "I think there are just some players that it's a tough match-up for you no matter the rankings.

"Obviously she has given me trouble in the past and she gave me trouble again today so that kind of sucks."

Joao Sousa dumps a cross-court forehand into the net to put himself into an immediate bit of bother at 15-30. First serve missed, a Sousa backhand south of the tape and Murray has a couple of tasty break points to tuck into at 15-40.

Sousa presses to the net to try and stem the flow of points. He manages to hustle Murray out of his first break chance and then frustrates the Scot with slicing defensive backhands to make it to deuce.

Murray works up two break points, one with a lovely wrong-footed forehand volley patted down the line, but can't convert either.

Seven minutes on the clock and on they grind.

    Egalite for an apparent eternity.

Murray gets the umpire out of his chair to check on a Sousa forefand up on his baseline. Up pops the finger, down drop the sides of Sousa's frown and Murray finally converts with a massive swatted backhand down the line.

Some fine panama hats being sported in the posh seats by the way. Kim Sears could do with one as she tries to wrest control of her hair back from the swirling Parisian winds.

Joao Sousa warmed up for Roland Garros by reaching the final of the clay-court warm-up in Geneva, losing to Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci.

The 26-year-old is bidding to become the first Portuguese man ever to reach the third round of the French Open.

If he does so he will have overturned not only a rotten run of form against Murray - who has beaten him in their last five meetings - but also against Top 10-ranked opponents.

He has lost 14 of his 15 meetings with the game's elite - with the one upset coming against Spain's David Ferrer in Kuala Lumpur in 2013.

He is 20-1 with the bookies to win this. Even in a two-horse race, those seem skinny odds.
