We are parking up for the day on the live text. But with Rafael Nadal (6-3 5-0 up on Jack Sock) and Novak Djokovic (1-0 down by on serve against Richard Gasquet) still in action, keep your eyes on the live scores and tennis index for all the latest.

    Bye for now.

So, in a Big Brother style, who has got the boot from the Glam Slam house today?

Andy Murray, Roger Federer and Serena Williams dropped a set apiece against Jeremy Chardy, Gael Monfils and Sloane Stephens, but survived through to the last eight.

Maria Sharapova ran into a Lucie Safarova-shaped wall though.

Elsewhere Garbine Muguruza made the last eight of Roland Garros - just as last year - after beating Flavia Pennetta.

Apologies for that. The wheels came off our live text machine. In a fairly major way.

While we were away, Serena Williams pulled of her great escape. The top seed is through to a meeting with either Julia Goerges or Sara Errani in the last eight.

So close, but so far for Sloane Stephens who had to strike while Williams was sub-zero.

She couldn't quite press home that advantage.

Sloane Stephens' turn to rummage around in the quiver and pull out an ace at game point down.

Serena Williams is still short of her devastating best, but her appetite for the fight is sharpening.

Bruising hitting finally takes its toll on her younger opponent and he noses ahead in the third.

Serena Williams is given a big dose of the medicine she usually doles out, being forced to skid and slide left and right, up and down, to keep getting some string on ripped forehands.

Stephens pulls 40-15 back to deuce with those big blasts and then slugs another winner off that wing to see off game point from deuce.

All in the timing from Stephens, who is a slighter build than Williams but generates almost as much power and pace.

Eventually Williams get the job done with a sledgehammer serve, but she is being made to work for every little point.

"It will be some story if Sharapova and Williams, the top two seeds, lose on the same day within two or three hours of each other on the same court.

"It would leave Petra Kvitova as the big favourite for the title."

Give her an angle and Sloane Stephens will give you a winner.

Forced wide by a high kicking Serena Williams groundstrokes, Stephens keeps her cool, keeps her shape and drills a ram-rod backhand winner down the line at deuce.

Williams concedes the next rally with a far less impressive shot off the same wing. The world number one is the hunted rather than hunter despite making inroad into that service game.

Serena Williams coming on strong down the home straight, perhaps after some wobbles beforehand, is one of the most familiar sights of women's tennis.

Sloane Stephens is the one making all the smart moves though at the moment. She forces two break point, only to be knocked back by Williams forehands banging like 200bpm techno.

Is there a little tension in Stephens arms when it comes to the moment to actually topple titan Williams?

"Coach Patrick Mouratoglou reaches for his tracksuit top as Serena Williams takes us into a third on a bright and breezy Chatrier, and he must have a touch of déjà vu this afternoon.

"His charge was similarly struggling against Victoria Azarenka two days ago and came back to dominate the decider. She spent much of today's first two sets shuffling around in a bit of a daze but it's a mark of her dominance that, even in that state, nobody was counting her out.

Sloane Stephens is finding the dead middle of the racquet. A couple of searing forehands streak past Williams who does not look as sure-footed as she might at the baseline.

A confident start to the third set.

    Afraid not.

This is heading into a third and deciding set as her backhand flies out.

Have we just passed "peak Stephens"?

The underdog's stock takes a knock as Serena Williams breaks serve for only the second time in the match.

And if there you could choose one person's serve you want to win you a set, you wouldn't have to think much past Serena.

And the danger is averted for Williams. At least for a game's duration.

She clings onto her service game like driftwood in the wake of that wreck of an opening set.

Stephens nibbled two points off the world number one's serve, but you don't get any marks for showing your working, only finding the right answer.

Off trots Andy Murray for a plunge in the ice bath with the sincere applause of Suzanne Lenglen ringing in his ears.

Over to Philippe Chatrier where Serena Williams has been backed into a corner by fellow American Sloane Stephens.

Serena is serving to stay in the match, trailing 6-1 5-4.

"For me the quarter-final will be 50/50. David Ferrer will be far the most difficult opponent Andy Murray has has faced so far.

"Ferrer has been to the final before so I think Murray will have to play a brilliant match to get through. The way Murray has played so far there's no reason why he can't beat Ferrer."

Andy Murray: "Jeremy Chardy kept going for some big shots, he kept hitting the backhand down the line, and made it very difficult for me. But I managed to be more solid in the third and fourth sets.

"I was hitting the ball well and I needed to play well to win today. I have never won against David Ferrer on clay before - and have lost to him once before at Roland Garros and I will need to play very well to win that."

Murray is into the 17th straight Grand Slam quarter-final.

He works up 40-0 in a twinkle. A yanked forehand and dolly to mid-court hands Chardy two free points. But he is just teasing...

A wrong-footing forehand does the job.

Two hours 51 minutes. David Ferrer next.

  20. Murray breakspublished at 14:53 British Summer Time 1 June 2015

The game on a plate. And Jeremy Chardy sent it back to the kitchen.

Murray was not even in shot as Chardy lined up a shoulder-high backhand volley at 40-30 with acres of clear red clay in front of him. Somehow he contrived to bury it into the net.

A guttural groan from all around Suzanne Lenglen. And Chardy's nerves are cooked.

Two wayward groundstrokes under little pressure and Murray will serve for the match next.
