  1. Post update

We are parking up for the day on the live text. But with Rafael Nadal (6-3 5-0 up on Jack Sock) and Novak Djokovic (1-0 down by on serve against Richard Gasquet) still in action, keep your eyes on the live scores and tennis index for all the latest.

    Bye for now.

  2. Post update

So, in a Big Brother style, who has got the boot from the Glam Slam house today?

Andy Murray, Roger Federer and Serena Williams dropped a set apiece against Jeremy Chardy, Gael Monfils and Sloane Stephens, but survived through to the last eight.

Maria Sharapova ran into a Lucie Safarova-shaped wall though.

Elsewhere Garbine Muguruza made the last eight of Roland Garros - just as last year - after beating Flavia Pennetta.

  3. Post update

The schedule is out for tomorrow's action.

It would have to go some to beat today's programme which was crammed to bursting with quality after Sunday's rain.

    Anyway, Tuesday.

    Court Philippe Chatrier

    Ana Ivanovic v Elina Svitolina

    Kei Nishikori v Jo-Wilfried Tsonga

    Court Suzanne Lenglen

    Garbine Muguruza v Lucie Safarova

    Stan Wawrinka v Roger Federer

  4. Post update

    Williams 1-6 7-5 6-3 Stephens

    Serena Williams celebrates

Apologies for that. The wheels came off our live text machine. In a fairly major way.

While we were away, Serena Williams pulled of her great escape. The top seed is through to a meeting with either Julia Goerges or Sara Errani in the last eight.

So close, but so far for Sloane Stephens who had to strike while Williams was sub-zero.

She couldn't quite press home that advantage.

  5. Williams breaks

    *Williams 1-6 7-5 2-2 Stephens

Sloane Stephens' turn to rummage around in the quiver and pull out an ace at game point down.

Serena Williams is still short of her devastating best, but her appetite for the fight is sharpening.

Bruising hitting finally takes its toll on her younger opponent and he noses ahead in the third.

  6. Post update

    Williams 1-6 7-5 2-2 Stephens*

Serena Williams is given a big dose of the medicine she usually doles out, being forced to skid and slide left and right, up and down, to keep getting some string on ripped forehands.

Stephens pulls 40-15 back to deuce with those big blasts and then slugs another winner off that wing to see off game point from deuce.

All in the timing from Stephens, who is a slighter build than Williams but generates almost as much power and pace.

Eventually Williams get the job done with a sledgehammer serve, but she is being made to work for every little point.

  7. Post update

    Kheredine Idessane

    BBC Scotland at Roland Garros

    Serena Williams looks dejected

"It will be some story if Sharapova and Williams, the top two seeds, lose on the same day within two or three hours of each other on the same court.

"It would leave Petra Kvitova as the big favourite for the title."

  8. Post update

    *Williams 1-6 7-5 1-2 Stephens

Give her an angle and Sloane Stephens will give you a winner.

Forced wide by a high kicking Serena Williams groundstrokes, Stephens keeps her cool, keeps her shape and drills a ram-rod backhand winner down the line at deuce.

Williams concedes the next rally with a far less impressive shot off the same wing. The world number one is the hunted rather than hunter despite making inroad into that service game.

  9. Post update

    Williams 1-6 7-5 1-1 Stephens*

Serena Williams coming on strong down the home straight, perhaps after some wobbles beforehand, is one of the most familiar sights of women's tennis.

Sloane Stephens is the one making all the smart moves though at the moment. She forces two break point, only to be knocked back by Williams forehands banging like 200bpm techno.

Is there a little tension in Stephens arms when it comes to the moment to actually topple titan Williams?

  10. Post update

    Piers Newbery

    BBC Sport at Roland Garros

"Coach Patrick Mouratoglou reaches for his tracksuit top as Serena Williams takes us into a third on a bright and breezy Chatrier, and he must have a touch of déjà vu this afternoon.

"His charge was similarly struggling against Victoria Azarenka two days ago and came back to dominate the decider. She spent much of today's first two sets shuffling around in a bit of a daze but it's a mark of her dominance that, even in that state, nobody was counting her out.

  11. Post update

    *Williams 1-6 7-5 0-1 Stephens

    Sloane Stephens

Sloane Stephens is finding the dead middle of the racquet. A couple of searing forehands streak past Williams who does not look as sure-footed as she might at the baseline.

A confident start to the third set.

  12. Williams wins second set

    Williams 1-6 7-5 Stephens*

Sloane Stephens asks if we are "kidding her".*

    Afraid not.

This is heading into a third and deciding set as her backhand flies out.

    *Expletive deleted.

  13. Williams breaks

    *Williams 1-6 6-5 Stephens

Have we just passed "peak Stephens"?

The underdog's stock takes a knock as Serena Williams breaks serve for only the second time in the match.

And if there you could choose one person's serve you want to win you a set, you wouldn't have to think much past Serena.

  14. Post update

    Williams 1-6 5-5 Stephens

And the danger is averted for Williams. At least for a game's duration.

She clings onto her service game like driftwood in the wake of that wreck of an opening set.

Stephens nibbled two points off the world number one's serve, but you don't get any marks for showing your working, only finding the right answer.

  15. Post update

    Andy Murray

Off trots Andy Murray for a plunge in the ice bath with the sincere applause of Suzanne Lenglen ringing in his ears.

Over to Philippe Chatrier where Serena Williams has been backed into a corner by fellow American Sloane Stephens.

Serena is serving to stay in the match, trailing 6-1 5-4.

  16. Post update

    Kheredine Idessane

    BBC Scotland at Roland Garros

"For me the quarter-final will be 50/50. David Ferrer will be far the most difficult opponent Andy Murray has has faced so far.

"Ferrer has been to the final before so I think Murray will have to play a brilliant match to get through. The way Murray has played so far there's no reason why he can't beat Ferrer."

  17. Post update

Andy Murray: "Jeremy Chardy kept going for some big shots, he kept hitting the backhand down the line, and made it very difficult for me. But I managed to be more solid in the third and fourth sets.

"I was hitting the ball well and I needed to play well to win today. I have never won against David Ferrer on clay before - and have lost to him once before at Roland Garros and I will need to play very well to win that."

  18. Murray into last eight

    Murray 6-4 3-6 6-3 6-2 Chardy

    Andy Murray

Murray is into the 17th straight Grand Slam quarter-final.

He works up 40-0 in a twinkle. A yanked forehand and dolly to mid-court hands Chardy two free points. But he is just teasing...

A wrong-footing forehand does the job.

Two hours 51 minutes. David Ferrer next.

  19. Williams breaks

    Williams 1-6 4-3 Stephens

    Serena Williams

News from centre court where Serena Williams breaks serve to take the lead in the second set against Sloane Stephens.

The world number one battling hard as you'd expect...

  20. Murray breaks

    *Murray 6-4 3-6 6-3 5-2 Chardy

The game on a plate. And Jeremy Chardy sent it back to the kitchen.

Murray was not even in shot as Chardy lined up a shoulder-high backhand volley at 40-30 with acres of clear red clay in front of him. Somehow he contrived to bury it into the net.

A guttural groan from all around Suzanne Lenglen. And Chardy's nerves are cooked.

Two wayward groundstrokes under little pressure and Murray will serve for the match next.

  21. Chardy breaks

    Murray 6-4 3-6 6-3 4-2 Chardy*

Is that a twist in the tale yet?

Jeremy Chardy comes out swinging, looking for the knockout punch he needs to get back in the set.

Two big beefy forehands help him to 0-40. Murray strafes him with a cross-court return, but the Scot's defences are run down in the next point.

Chardy has a break back. But there is still another at large in this set...

  22. Murray breaks

    *Murray 6-4 3-6 6-3 4-1 Chardy

Andy Murray with a look at 0-30.

Jeremy Chardy shoves his whole pile of chips on the table with a do-or-die drop-shot in the next rally. He has measured it to perfection and the Frenchman rides the wave of that shot to 40-30.

But Murray's tennis is tinged with greatness at the moment. A rescue act that the Thunderbirds would be proud of befuddles Chardy - stunned in midcourt by a backhand that finds that sliver of space.

From deuce, Murray capitalises on a second break point and the end is surley nigh for Chardy.

  23. Post update

    Kheredine Idessane

    BBC Scotland at Roland Garros

    Jeremy Chardy reacts

"One man is breathing much harder than the other. Chardy has the look of a man who knows how far away he is from winning this match."

  24. Post update

    Murray 6-4 3-6 6-3 3-1 Chardy*

Andy Murray is still undefeated as a married man.

Is there time for a swift Vegas-style changeover ceremony for Jeremy Chardy to make an honest woman of Alize Lim?

It might be his best hope.

The Frenchman has misplaced his mojo as he is hustled out of the game from 30-30 by a superb Murray winner and netted forehand of his own.

  25. Murray breaks

    *Murray 6-4 3-6 6-3 2-1 Chardy

Jeremy Chardy gets a return right up his nostril at 40-30, failing to readjust his feet in time and allowing Murray to deuce.

The double-fault rears its head at exactly the wrong time for Chardy - coughing up a 10th break point of the match.

Classic Murray. Defence that stretches all the way into the front three rows as he soaks up the best that Chardy has got and reaps the basic error - the Frenchman gets frustrated and cuffs into the net.

Is that a bell tolling in the distance?

  26. Post update

    Murray 6-4 3-6 6-3 1-1 Chardy*

Oh, that is a powderkeg of a backhand from Jeremy Chardy, just swatted back past Andy Murray for 15-15.

A statement of intent that the crowd backed with hearty cheers.

Andy Murray pushes his luck with a forehand, clearing the baseline by a narrow margin for 30-30. Chardy pummelling and then making one of those pesky drive-volleys has 30-40 and break point.

Oh la la. That is as saucy as a seaside postcard from Murray. A sublime pick-up half-volley, hands as soft as a haemophiliac prince, drops a lovely winner dead over Chardy's side.

The momentum is swilling back and forth at the moment. A key time in the match for someone to wrestle supremacy.

  27. Game and first set

    Williams 1-6 Stephens

    Serena Williams

Could we see the first and second seeds in the women's draw knocked out today?

Maria Sharapova has gone already and now world number one Serena Williams has lost the first set against Sloane Stephens. And not just lost it, she's been taken apart by her fellow American.

  28. Post update

    *Murray 6-4 3-6 6-3 0-1 Chardy

Jeremy Chardy hits a backhand shot

Jeremy Chardy opens up affairs in the fourth set with a hold to love.

  29. How's stat?

The stats on that third set show that the Andy Murray serve is still not the unerring metronome that it was in the first.

He landed with 63% of first serves, compared to 72% in the opener and won 65% behind first serve, compared to 89%.

  30. Post update

    Piers Newbery

    BBC Sport at Roland Garros

"Chardy has made a woeful nine double-faults in three sets, and several of them at absolutely key moments. He has also cornered the market in the drive-volley blazed wide with the court gaping, as at 15-30 in that last game.

"The Frenchman has pushed Murray very hard with some great shot-making, but if the basics of your game have any weaknesses, the Scot will draw them out over the course of a few hours."

  31. Murray wins third set

    Murray 6-4 3-6 6-3 Chardy*

    Andy Murray

Murray is over the third-set finishline, but he had to tip-toe around some potholes to get there.

Jeremy Chardy runs down a drop shot and slaps away a volley for 15-30.

A monster forehand has Murray on the run in the next rally, but sinew-straining defence from the Scot forces one more shot out of Chardy. And it is a shocker. A running forehand slap volley that streaks long.

What should have been 15-40 and two break points is 30-30.

Murray opens the door a crack with a double fault on 40-30, but a battering backhand out wide makes the second set point stick.

  32. Murray breaks

    *Murray 6-4 3-6 5-3 Chardy

Jeremy Chardy drifts wide to offer up 15-40 and reacts with a massive stereotype of a Gallic shrug.

That showed some stones though. A forehand that could not afford to be 20cm deeper or wider saves the first.

The second though is lost without Murray having to put gut to ball with a deflating double fault.

Murray to serve for the set next out of nowhere.

  33. Post update

    Murray 6-4 3-6 4-3 Chardy*

    Andy Murray

Andy Murray in a little spot of difficulty at 40-30 up.

He indulges in a game of bluff and double-bluff from the baseline - bouncing the ball, scrubbing out a mark with his toe, resetting himself, taking another look down court.

Perfect poker face. His serve pins Chardy to the back boards like a butterfly collectors prize specimen. Right into the body and Murray yelps in delight.

  34. Post update

    Piers Newbery

    BBC Sport at Roland Garros

"Please, sit down!" says umpire Carlos Ramos. The Lenglen logjam is a regular phenomenon as fans try to cram inside, and they generally take quite a lot of shaming into grabbing a nearby seat.

"A few of the photographers who earlier gathered to capture the demise of Sharapova have arrived too, never a great sign for one of the leading names. Murray has given himself a few sharp digs of "C'mon!" as he tries to get his game going here."

  35. Post update

    *Murray 6-4 3-6 3-3 Chardy

The start of the game is held up by a logjam of spectators standing in the stairwells, trying and failing to find the empty seats that they have tickets for.

They are eventually forced into retreat by an umpire's request and cavalcade of jeers.

It has not thrown Chardy off his stride though. A service hold to love.

At least it means those punters will get another go at locating their places pretty soon.

  36. Post update

    Annabel Croft

Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

"Murray has just lost a bit of intensity. He's a bit wayward lately whereas he was so intense at the start. The match has taken many twists and turns but I believe he will come through it because I don't see Chardy keeping up this level for five sets."

  37. Post update

    Murray 6-4 3-6 3-2 Chardy*

No storming of the serve barricades this time. Jeremy Chardy's sting of winners has thinned out and Andy Murray - while still not firing on all cylinders - has enough quality, class and knowhow in the bank to see him through.

  38. Live now

    Williams v Stephens

Top seed Serena Williams and Sloane Stephens, her fellow American, are about to get their match under way on court Philippe Chatrier.

Williams is chasing her third French Open title - and her chances received a major boost earlier on when Safarova beat Sharapova.

  39. Post update

    *Murray 6-4 3-6 2-2 Chardy

    Andy Murray

Andy Murray is being wound up as tight as his strings. Tighter in fact as another one snaps in his racquet and he is forced to fetch his third out of the bag at 15-40.

The Scot has been having a cathartic bellow and a few pained looks up to his entourage.

Another gentle angle catches Chardy going for a wander to the wrong part of the court, but the gap is too much to make up.

  40. Post update

    Murray 6-4 3-6 2-1 Chardy*

The French crowd let out an involuntary gasp of appreciation as Andy Murray directs a backhand winner down the line with a deft flick of the wrist, just as Jeremy Chardy was sniffing blood in the rally.

Murray 30-15 up. And he then closes out the game with a drop-shot as soft as a princess' mattress.

Check those charts. I think the tide is turning.

  41. Murray breaks

    *Murray 6-4 3-6 1-1 Chardy

Is that the Jeremy Chardy game starting to revert to type?

The sky-high standard of the last half-hour or so is definitely an outlier rather than the norm and, after lazily clumping an overhead into the net for 15-30, another couple of errors give Murray the game.

  42. Game, set and match

    Ferrer 6-2 6-2 6-4 Cilic

    David Ferrer

And David Ferrer has seen off the challenge of Marin Cilic in impressive fashion to become the fourth man into the quarter-finals.

The seventh seed awaits the winner of this match between Murray and Chardy, and he'll have plenty of energy left after his rapid win.

  43. Chardy breaks

    Murray 6-4 3-6 0-1 Chardy*

    Uh-oh.

"Play it like Rog" should have been Andy Murray's thought as he sat down at the changover.

Federer just neturalised the threat of a dangerous Frenchman, concentrating on beating Monfils over three sets rather than five after losing the second.

But Chardy is deep, deep in the groove and needs more than a minute sit-down to interupt his flow. Pure backhand gold seals the break.

  44. Game, set and match

    Federer 6-3 4-6 6-4 6-1 Monfils

    Roger Federer

Roger Federer is safely into the quarter-finals with an impressive display in his weather-interrupted fourth-round match.

Resuming today at one set all, the Swiss brushed aside the challenge of France's Gael Monfils.

Federer, the 2009 champion, will face Davis Cup team-mate Stan Wawrinka for a place in the semi-finals.

  45. Post update

    Piers Newbery

    BBC Sport at Roland Garros

"Those five break points for Murray that went begging at the start of the second set look a lot more significant now, with Chardy's confidence growing by the minute. The basics of serve, second shot and smash that were troubling him earlier have clicked into gear.

"Chardy raises his fist towards his player box while Murray troops back to his chair, and this match is going the way of his second against Joao Sousa. Murray squeaked through a tight third set there, he'll hope for something similar now."

  46. Post update

    Annabel Croft

Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

"That long, long service game at the start of the set, where Chardy managed to come out on top, seemed to set the tone.

"He seemed to get his serve going much better and the set changed dramatically. A very impressive set of tennis but whether he can maintain that level we will have to see."

  47. Game and second set

    *Murray 6-4 3-6 Chardy

Jeremy Chardy rolls to 30-0 with one nonchalant backhand bop down the line.

His progress hits a bit of a bump as he fails to scrape the ball off floor after Murray gets a thick net cord.

40-15 and two set points now. Murray saves the first with a forceful forehand out wide, but that flops out.

An hour and 40 on the clock and Chardy has parity. Murray isn't in trouble yet, but he is loitering in the adjacent postcode.

  48. Post update

    Murray 6-4 3-5 Chardy*

It wasn't pretty. But Murray keeps the spotlight on Jeremy Chardy with a service hold.

  49. Sharapova makes no excuses

    Maria Sharapova

Last year's women's champion Maria Sharapova said she was outplayed and refused to blame a cold for her shock 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 defeat by Lucie Safarova.

"My opponent had a different gear than I did," said the Russian. "I felt like I had small openings but I just wasn't able to play a good few points.

"She was able to do that for a longer period. She took the time away from me, created her angles and I didn't. That was the difference, in my opinion."

She did not use the cold she's been dealing with as an excuse, saying: "I don't like to talk about it, and I don't think it really makes a difference. I'm still a competitor, no matter what."

  50. Post update

    Murray 6-4 2-5 Chardy*

    Oh dearie me.

Andy Murray's drop-shot is so limp that it barely makes the foot of the net on the final point.

A chance gone. Chardy just a hold away. But that can quickly stretch into a yawning chasm in the Frenchman's mind.

He has a few gremlins upstairs. This set isn't cooked just yet.

  51. Post update

    Murray 6-4 2-4 Chardy*

He lost the first point, but that service game turned out as easy as Sunday morning for Andy Murray.

Very tidy. Time to sharpen the scapel and put some pressure on Chardy on return.

  52. Post update

    *Murray 6-4 1-4 Chardy

Jeremy Chardy's forehand is pretty much all killer, no filler at the moment.

Murray watches one fizz past him in a blur. Time to batten down the hatches and wait for the storm to pass? The downpours of winners tend to be sharp, but short from the Frenchman.

  53. Chardy breaks

    Murray 6-4 1-3 Chardy*

    Jeremy Chardy

"Chardy! Clap, clap, clap." Repeat right up until Andy Murray's ball toss.

The Suzanne Lenglen crowd are all reading off the same page as their man works up 0-30.

Murray puts a can on the brewing hubbub with the next two points, but a brilliant angle gives Chardy his first break point.

    And he takes it!

He nails a ripped return off Murray's second serve and somehow - after being out-played for most of the start of the second set - Chardy is a break up in it.

  54. Post update

    Piers Newbery

    BBC Sport at Roland Garros

"They are either with you or against you, quite often within about five seconds. The home crowd loved their man coming through that epic 15-minute game, but then struggle to contain their annoyance when he reverts to double-faulting.

"Fortunately, some late arrivals in the crowd are spotted at a changeover, and there's nothing they love more here than giving those in the posh seats a good old fashioned booing."

  55. Game and third set

    Federer 6-3 4-6 6-4 Monfils

    Roger Federer

Roger Federer is one set away from another French Open quarter-final. A total of 14 winners in the third set from the second seed, with seven out of 10 points at the net going his way, unsurprisingly.

  56. Post update

    Murray 6-4 1-2 Chardy*

There is some tectonic-level pressure being applied to the Jeremy Chardy serve.

The Frenchman's wayward volley gives Murray 15-40 and two break points.

They slide south though as Chardy foxes his man with a slower delivery and then a string snaps on Murray's bat on the next.

Chardy makes good an escape from deuce and Murray has failed to covert five break points in this second set.

Is it just a matter of time? Or are they ones that he is going to live to regret?

  57. Post update

    Murray 6-4 1-1 Chardy*

By comparison, Andy Murray's service game disappears in a puff of smoke and three minutes flat.

Jeremy Chardy whips away one nice forehand winner in the middle of it all, but Murray continues his happy habit of closing these service games with an ace.

  58. Post update

    Annabel Croft

Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

"Andy Murray is so sharp and hardly making any errors. You have to play so well to beat him.

"He wants to motor through this match. We used to think his concentration levels would ebb and flow but these days he's much more efficient."

  59. Latest scores

    Ferrer 6-2 6-2 Cilic

    David Ferrer

David Ferrer is racing away with his match against Marin Cilic. The Spaniard has won the first two sets and looks the favourite to take on Murray or Chardy in the last eight.

  60. Chardy wins 15-minute game

    *Murray 6-4 0-1 Chardy

Now then, Chardy duffs a cramped backhand into the net but the ball was right up under his nose on the baseline. The umpire is out of his chair and rules it was out. Advantage Chardy, knocked back by a superb Murray pass from way out wide.

Another double fault - number five of the match - and another Murray break point. Salvaged by a regulation overhead.

Another double fault - and Murray wasted that chance, bopping a mid-court backhand wide when the court with fluttering eyelashes and wide open spaces at him. Perhaps he was just trying to be a little too clever.

Chardy finally emerges victorious after a mammoth 15-minute opening game of the set.

The Frenchman has chalked up 17 unforced errors though to Murray's seven. He can't keep leaking that many free points against one of the game's best.

  61. Deuce...

    Andy Murray

Andy Murray tucks his napkin under his chin and gets fully stuck into a Jeremy Chardy serve, walloping away a winner for 30-30. Lovely jubbly.

He has been so efficient today. Nothing too flashy, but just enough accuracy and angles to pierce the Chardy defences or take him too far out of his comfort zone.

More allsorts tennis from Chardy as he dazzles down the line with a backhand winner before dragging another double fault into view to bring us to deuce.

Neither man can put together the run of points required. Every French cheer followed shortly by a sigh. We go on...

  62. Post update

    Piers Newbery

    BBC Sport at Roland Garros

"Murray gives further evidence that he could not give a stuff about winning any friends out on court as he appears to question a call on the Chardy serve.

"Chardy told the media before the match he had been annoyed by Murray withdrawing from last month's Italian Open, the day after beating the Frenchman. He gives Murray a long stare after taking the next point. A bit of needle? If so, it's likely to work in Murray's favour as he likes nothing better."

  63. Murray wins first set

    Murray 6-4 Chardy*

    Andy Murray

Pushed back well behind the baseline, Andy Murray slugs a forehand into the net to give Chardy a glimmer of hope and 30-15.

One wag in the crowd gives Murray the rising groan as he prepares to serve, the sort of noise you make to put off a goalkeeper as he prepare to take a goal-kick.

    It doesn't work.

Two serves jam into Chardy body and, although the Frenchman fishes them out from somewhere near his armpits, he can't get into the rallies.

  64. Post update

    Annabel Croft

Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

"You don't want to wind this crowd up. The fans are very much part of the show. They are not just watching, they want to make their presence felt and will come down on you like a ton of bricks if you upset them.

"It's a very different atmosphere from Centre Court at Wimbledon."

  65. Post update

    *Murray 5-4 Chardy

    Andy Murray fist pumps

    "C'mon!"

Andy Murray wants this done ahead of time and the first go at serving in the second. He celebrates loudly as he wins the point for 30-30.

Oh hello, nice of you to join us.

The two-hour lunch break must be over because the French public have put in an appearance. They jeer as Murray questions a line call on a Chardy ace and then burst into cheers as he nets on return on the next point.

Murray to serve for the set next.

Roger Federer is back on court and already has a break of serve.

The Swiss and Gael Monfils resumed at one set all after their fourth-round match was suspended on Sunday because of bad light.

    Murray 5-3 Chardy*

Jeremy Chardy is fumbling about on return.

Andy Murray's serve is not straining the speed gun, but the Frenchman is struggling to get a read on it.

Two returns float long to give Murray a head start in the game and the Scot takes the other two points required as he peppers Chardy's backhand with probing angles and then puts away a nice stop-volley.

Andrew Neill: Murray should bring in a specialist serve coach while Mauresmo is on maternity leave. Too fragile too often for the big matches.

  69. Post update

    *Murray 4-3 Chardy

Jeremy Chardy flays a big, ugly old forehand long and wide to give Andy Murray 40-30 and a sniff of a break.

Nothing doing there for the Scot though. He plunges into the net with a backhand. Still just the single break.

If Murray keeps landing with those first serves though it is likely to be enough though.

  70. Post update

    Murray 4-2 Chardy*

Andy Murray's first serve was fitful against Joao Sousa in the second round and patchy against Nick Krygios last time out.

It is looking shipshape and polished today though. He has landed with 67% of his first serves so far and won nine of 10 points behind it.

Second serve is less clever though. Just one out of five points won from that.

    Annabel Croft

Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

"Chardy was under immense pressure there from Murray. He got the toss wrong and his focus was right off the ball. Murray has a presence and is moving in on the serve.

"Chardy looks exasperated - he knows Murray has a grip on this set. Murray's ability to return gets into your head psychologically."

  72. Murray breaks

    *Murray 3-2 Chardy

    Andy Murray

You have more chance of knowing what you are going to get when you are rummaging around in a bag of Revels in the cinema than with Chardy.

He duffs down another double fault - his third of the match already - to give Andy Murray 0-40 and three break points.

The Frenchman saves two, coming to the net to slap away an overhead at the second attempt.

But then he dumps a backhand out to gift the game to Murray.

Scream if you want to go faster. The Chardy roller-coaster is in full swing, with Andy Murray riding it out so far.

    Andy Murray's team

Andy Murray sips down some isotonic and steps up to deliver a mojo-dampening love service game.

He closed it out with a whopping ace as well. That will keep the natives from getting too restless.

    *Murray 1-2 Chardy

    Jeremy Chardy

Jeremy Chardy tops out at six foot two inches, so he has plenty of pop in his serve as well as some nice touches around the court.

That was something ominously close to the full package as he walloped Murray around and held serve to 15.

Is this just the inevitable purple patch coming early though?

  75. Post update

    Piers Newbery

    BBC Sport at Roland Garros

"Chardy has managed to bring the crowd to life after that dreadful opening service game, and there is the full range of "Allez!" And "Ole!" ringing around Lenglen as the Frenchman whacks down an ace to take the lead.

"The sun is emerging, spectators still streaming in and the stage is set."

  76. Chardy breaks

    Murray 1-1 Chardy*

And Jeremy Chardy is back in the room.

Andy Murray get the lucky side of a thick net cord with Chardy 15-30 up. All apologies from the British number one, but that could be big.

No matter for Chardy. The Frenchman comes to the net and forces Murray wide for a break point at 30-40.

Tremendous forehand pings eventually stretch Murray out of shape in a high-class exchange and Chardy has parity.

  77. Cilic or Ferrer await winner

    David Ferrer

By the way, the seeds have germinated perfectly to produce the match below this in the draw.

Ninth plays seventh, just as planned, with US Open champion Marin Cilic and David Ferrer - a man who loves clay like Swayze and Moore in Ghost - competing to play either Murray or Chardy.

  78. Murray breaks

    *Murray 1-0 Chardy

The atmosphere streams out of a patchily-populated Philippe Chatrier as Jeremy Chardy coughs up successive double-faults to allow Andy Murray a break in the very first game of the match.

Early in the day, big point anti-climaxes, that was the anti-Monfils.

Unbelievable scenes of tension on Philippe Chatrier.

Defending champ Maria Sharapova, match point down at 5-4 in the second against Lucie Safarova, defends for her life and just about clings on.

But here comes a second match point. First serve missed...

    Russell Fuller

BBC tennis correspondent on Radio 5 live sports extra

"Murray has a very good record of beating home players at home Grand Slams. If Murray is at or close to his best he should win but Chardy is a good player. He is not the type of player who usually troubles Murray though."

    Jeremy Chardy
Image caption: Chardy is dating French number 13 Alize Lim

A crueller man than me might suggest that Jeremy Chardy is straight out of that fourth-round fodder mould that the French seem to specialise in.

Promising junior career, not fully realised in the senior ranks, lovely deft touch at the net, dangerous on his day, matinee looks, gossip-column regular. You know the drill.

Chardy is aiming to make the quarter-finals for the first time in nine campaigns at his home Grand Slam.

    Piers Newbery

    BBC Sport at Roland Garros

"We're back on Court Suzanne Lenglen, which is where Murray has played most of his tennis at Roland Garros over the last couple of years.

"The liveliest of the show courts usually has an extra edge when there's a Frenchman involved, and today it's the quietly-spoken Chardy who must rouse his compatriots. He might find it hard going against Murray, who relishes any sort of support, be it with or against him."

Garbine Muguruza serves out without a hint of nerves to knock out Italy's Flavia Pennetta 6-3 6-4.

She will play whoever emerges from the wreckage of Maria Sharapova and Lucie Safarova's match on Philippe Chatrier next.

Next up for us is Andy Murray v Jeremy Chardy. The stage is set, we just await the leading men...

  87. Post update

    Piers Newbery

    BBC Sport at Roland Garros

"You know something is up when the clicking of camera shutters becomes a constant buzz, and Sharapova's troubles have attracted a swarm of photographers to Chatrier.

"The Russian's coach, Sven Groeneveld, has been urging his charge on from the stands but Safarova has had too much for her so far, making Sharapova look like the flat-footed hard-courter who first arrived in Paris a decade ago. The fighting spirit is always evident though and this one could have a fair way to go yet."

    Maria Sharapova
Image caption: "One second please. This is getting slightly irritating...."

Defending Maria Sharapova was outgunned 7-3 in an opening-set tie-break by Czech Lucie Safarova and was a break down in the second.

Sharapova has pulled on the knuckle-dusters to get the set back on serve, but she is in a right old scrap out there.

Three-two Safarova with Sharapova serving. And griping about line calls.

    Garbine Muguruza

Andy Murray and Jeremy Chardy will be dusting off the dancing shoes very shortly.

In the match before their's on Suzanne Lenglen, Spaniard Garbine Muguruza is about to serve for the match against 28th seed Flavia Pennetta at 6-3 5-4.

But meanwhile there is something rather tasty brewing over on Philippe Chatrier....

Image caption: Andy Murray's last defeat to French opposition at a Grand Slam came against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the 2008 Australian Open - when he looked like this

The Auld Alliance was a 13th century French-Scottish understanding based on mutual hatred of the English and love of fine wine.

    Happy days.

Andy Murray has been testing those Franco-Celtic relations to the limit in more recent times.

In his last 22 Grand Slam meetings with French opposition, he has not allowed them a single victory.

Jeremy Chardy and the vast majority of spectators on Suzanne Lenglen will be trying to even things up a little this afternoon.
