By comparison, Andy Murray's service game disappears in a puff of smoke and three minutes flat.

Jeremy Chardy whips away one nice forehand winner in the middle of it all, but Murray continues his happy habit of closing these service games with an ace.

"Andy Murray is so sharp and hardly making any errors. You have to play so well to beat him.

"He wants to motor through this match. We used to think his concentration levels would ebb and flow but these days he's much more efficient."

David Ferrer is racing away with his match against Marin Cilic. The Spaniard has won the first two sets and looks the favourite to take on Murray or Chardy in the last eight.

  4. Chardy wins 15-minute gamepublished at 12:59 British Summer Time 1 June 2015

Now then, Chardy duffs a cramped backhand into the net but the ball was right up under his nose on the baseline. The umpire is out of his chair and rules it was out. Advantage Chardy, knocked back by a superb Murray pass from way out wide.

Another double fault - number five of the match - and another Murray break point. Salvaged by a regulation overhead.

Another double fault - and Murray wasted that chance, bopping a mid-court backhand wide when the court with fluttering eyelashes and wide open spaces at him. Perhaps he was just trying to be a little too clever.

Chardy finally emerges victorious after a mammoth 15-minute opening game of the set.

The Frenchman has chalked up 17 unforced errors though to Murray's seven. He can't keep leaking that many free points against one of the game's best.

Andy Murray tucks his napkin under his chin and gets fully stuck into a Jeremy Chardy serve, walloping away a winner for 30-30. Lovely jubbly.

He has been so efficient today. Nothing too flashy, but just enough accuracy and angles to pierce the Chardy defences or take him too far out of his comfort zone.

More allsorts tennis from Chardy as he dazzles down the line with a backhand winner before dragging another double fault into view to bring us to deuce.

Neither man can put together the run of points required. Every French cheer followed shortly by a sigh. We go on...

"Murray gives further evidence that he could not give a stuff about winning any friends out on court as he appears to question a call on the Chardy serve.

"Chardy told the media before the match he had been annoyed by Murray withdrawing from last month's Italian Open, the day after beating the Frenchman. He gives Murray a long stare after taking the next point. A bit of needle? If so, it's likely to work in Murray's favour as he likes nothing better."

Pushed back well behind the baseline, Andy Murray slugs a forehand into the net to give Chardy a glimmer of hope and 30-15.

One wag in the crowd gives Murray the rising groan as he prepares to serve, the sort of noise you make to put off a goalkeeper as he prepare to take a goal-kick.

    It doesn't work.

Two serves jam into Chardy body and, although the Frenchman fishes them out from somewhere near his armpits, he can't get into the rallies.

"You don't want to wind this crowd up. The fans are very much part of the show. They are not just watching, they want to make their presence felt and will come down on you like a ton of bricks if you upset them.

"It's a very different atmosphere from Centre Court at Wimbledon."

    "C'mon!"

Andy Murray wants this done ahead of time and the first go at serving in the second. He celebrates loudly as he wins the point for 30-30.

Oh hello, nice of you to join us.

The two-hour lunch break must be over because the French public have put in an appearance. They jeer as Murray questions a line call on a Chardy ace and then burst into cheers as he nets on return on the next point.

Murray to serve for the set next.

Roger Federer is back on court and already has a break of serve.

The Swiss and Gael Monfils resumed at one set all after their fourth-round match was suspended on Sunday because of bad light.

Jeremy Chardy is fumbling about on return.

Andy Murray's serve is not straining the speed gun, but the Frenchman is struggling to get a read on it.

Two returns float long to give Murray a head start in the game and the Scot takes the other two points required as he peppers Chardy's backhand with probing angles and then puts away a nice stop-volley.

Andrew Neill: Murray should bring in a specialist serve coach while Mauresmo is on maternity leave. Too fragile too often for the big matches.

Jeremy Chardy flays a big, ugly old forehand long and wide to give Andy Murray 40-30 and a sniff of a break.

Nothing doing there for the Scot though. He plunges into the net with a backhand. Still just the single break.

If Murray keeps landing with those first serves though it is likely to be enough though.

Andy Murray's first serve was fitful against Joao Sousa in the second round and patchy against Nick Krygios last time out.

It is looking shipshape and polished today though. He has landed with 67% of his first serves so far and won nine of 10 points behind it.

Second serve is less clever though. Just one out of five points won from that.

"Chardy was under immense pressure there from Murray. He got the toss wrong and his focus was right off the ball. Murray has a presence and is moving in on the serve.

"Chardy looks exasperated - he knows Murray has a grip on this set. Murray's ability to return gets into your head psychologically."

You have more chance of knowing what you are going to get when you are rummaging around in a bag of Revels in the cinema than with Chardy.

He duffs down another double fault - his third of the match already - to give Andy Murray 0-40 and three break points.

The Frenchman saves two, coming to the net to slap away an overhead at the second attempt.

But then he dumps a backhand out to gift the game to Murray.

Scream if you want to go faster. The Chardy roller-coaster is in full swing, with Andy Murray riding it out so far.

Andy Murray sips down some isotonic and steps up to deliver a mojo-dampening love service game.

He closed it out with a whopping ace as well. That will keep the natives from getting too restless.

Jeremy Chardy tops out at six foot two inches, so he has plenty of pop in his serve as well as some nice touches around the court.

That was something ominously close to the full package as he walloped Murray around and held serve to 15.

Is this just the inevitable purple patch coming early though?

"Chardy has managed to bring the crowd to life after that dreadful opening service game, and there is the full range of "Allez!" And "Ole!" ringing around Lenglen as the Frenchman whacks down an ace to take the lead.

"The sun is emerging, spectators still streaming in and the stage is set."
