Good news for you - this commentary is now available on Radio 5 live sports extra as well as online because of the rain delaying play at the Test match at Headingley.

  2. Chardy breakspublished at 14:49 British Summer Time 1 June 2015

Is that a twist in the tale yet?

Jeremy Chardy comes out swinging, looking for the knockout punch he needs to get back in the set.

Two big beefy forehands help him to 0-40. Murray strafes him with a cross-court return, but the Scot's defences are run down in the next point.

Chardy has a break back. But there is still another at large in this set...

  3. Murray breakspublished at 14:44 British Summer Time 1 June 2015

Andy Murray with a look at 0-30.

Jeremy Chardy shoves his whole pile of chips on the table with a do-or-die drop-shot in the next rally. He has measured it to perfection and the Frenchman rides the wave of that shot to 40-30.

But Murray's tennis is tinged with greatness at the moment. A rescue act that the Thunderbirds would be proud of befuddles Chardy - stunned in midcourt by a backhand that finds that sliver of space.

From deuce, Murray capitalises on a second break point and the end is surley nigh for Chardy.

"One man is breathing much harder than the other. Chardy has the look of a man who knows how far away he is from winning this match."

Andy Murray is still undefeated as a married man.

Is there time for a swift Vegas-style changeover ceremony for Jeremy Chardy to make an honest woman of Alize Lim?

It might be his best hope.

The Frenchman has misplaced his mojo as he is hustled out of the game from 30-30 by a superb Murray winner and netted forehand of his own.

  6. Murray breakspublished at 14:34 British Summer Time 1 June 2015

Jeremy Chardy gets a return right up his nostril at 40-30, failing to readjust his feet in time and allowing Murray to deuce.

The double-fault rears its head at exactly the wrong time for Chardy - coughing up a 10th break point of the match.

Classic Murray. Defence that stretches all the way into the front three rows as he soaks up the best that Chardy has got and reaps the basic error - the Frenchman gets frustrated and cuffs into the net.

Is that a bell tolling in the distance?

Oh, that is a powderkeg of a backhand from Jeremy Chardy, just swatted back past Andy Murray for 15-15.

A statement of intent that the crowd backed with hearty cheers.

Andy Murray pushes his luck with a forehand, clearing the baseline by a narrow margin for 30-30. Chardy pummelling and then making one of those pesky drive-volleys has 30-40 and break point.

Oh la la. That is as saucy as a seaside postcard from Murray. A sublime pick-up half-volley, hands as soft as a haemophiliac prince, drops a lovely winner dead over Chardy's side.

The momentum is swilling back and forth at the moment. A key time in the match for someone to wrestle supremacy.

Could we see the first and second seeds in the women's draw knocked out today?

Maria Sharapova has gone already and now world number one Serena Williams has lost the first set against Sloane Stephens. And not just lost it, she's been taken apart by her fellow American.

  10. How's stat?published at 14:19 British Summer Time 1 June 2015

The stats on that third set show that the Andy Murray serve is still not the unerring metronome that it was in the first.

He landed with 63% of first serves, compared to 72% in the opener and won 65% behind first serve, compared to 89%.

"Chardy has made a woeful nine double-faults in three sets, and several of them at absolutely key moments. He has also cornered the market in the drive-volley blazed wide with the court gaping, as at 15-30 in that last game.

"The Frenchman has pushed Murray very hard with some great shot-making, but if the basics of your game have any weaknesses, the Scot will draw them out over the course of a few hours."

Murray is over the third-set finishline, but he had to tip-toe around some potholes to get there.

Jeremy Chardy runs down a drop shot and slaps away a volley for 15-30.

A monster forehand has Murray on the run in the next rally, but sinew-straining defence from the Scot forces one more shot out of Chardy. And it is a shocker. A running forehand slap volley that streaks long.

What should have been 15-40 and two break points is 30-30.

Murray opens the door a crack with a double fault on 40-30, but a battering backhand out wide makes the second set point stick.

  13. Murray breakspublished at 14:09 British Summer Time 1 June 2015

Jeremy Chardy drifts wide to offer up 15-40 and reacts with a massive stereotype of a Gallic shrug.

That showed some stones though. A forehand that could not afford to be 20cm deeper or wider saves the first.

The second though is lost without Murray having to put gut to ball with a deflating double fault.

Murray to serve for the set next out of nowhere.

Andy Murray in a little spot of difficulty at 40-30 up.

He indulges in a game of bluff and double-bluff from the baseline - bouncing the ball, scrubbing out a mark with his toe, resetting himself, taking another look down court.

Perfect poker face. His serve pins Chardy to the back boards like a butterfly collectors prize specimen. Right into the body and Murray yelps in delight.

"Please, sit down!" says umpire Carlos Ramos. The Lenglen logjam is a regular phenomenon as fans try to cram inside, and they generally take quite a lot of shaming into grabbing a nearby seat.

"A few of the photographers who earlier gathered to capture the demise of Sharapova have arrived too, never a great sign for one of the leading names. Murray has given himself a few sharp digs of "C'mon!" as he tries to get his game going here."

  16. Postpublished at 14:00 British Summer Time 1 June 2015

The start of the game is held up by a logjam of spectators standing in the stairwells, trying and failing to find the empty seats that they have tickets for.

They are eventually forced into retreat by an umpire's request and cavalcade of jeers.

It has not thrown Chardy off his stride though. A service hold to love.

At least it means those punters will get another go at locating their places pretty soon.

"Murray has just lost a bit of intensity. He's a bit wayward lately whereas he was so intense at the start. The match has taken many twists and turns but I believe he will come through it because I don't see Chardy keeping up this level for five sets."

  18. Postpublished at 13:56 British Summer Time 1 June 2015

No storming of the serve barricades this time. Jeremy Chardy's sting of winners has thinned out and Andy Murray - while still not firing on all cylinders - has enough quality, class and knowhow in the bank to see him through.

Top seed Serena Williams and Sloane Stephens, her fellow American, are about to get their match under way on court Philippe Chatrier.

Williams is chasing her third French Open title - and her chances received a major boost earlier on when Safarova beat Sharapova.

Andy Murray is being wound up as tight as his strings. Tighter in fact as another one snaps in his racquet and he is forced to fetch his third out of the bag at 15-40.

The Scot has been having a cathartic bellow and a few pained looks up to his entourage.

Another gentle angle catches Chardy going for a wander to the wrong part of the court, but the gap is too much to make up.
