That last game from Tsonga woke up the Chatrier crowd, if nothing else, and gave them hope that their man could turn this oil tanker of a tennis match around. Tsonga springs forward into action, leaping into a forehand volley to win the eighth of his nine net points, for 30-15. His heavy serve forces Wawrinka into a couple of stray forehands and to stay within touching distance of the Swiss.

Is the tide turning? The French crowd, who have found their voice again, hope so. Tsonga allows himself a little fistpump as the Frenchman moves into a 30-0 lead when Wawrinka cannot match a deep return.

Oh. That advantage is wiped out almost as quickly as it developed. A heavy forehand past the baseline, followed by a mis-hit backhand which pops off the strings, sees to that.

Wawrinka blasts down an ace - leaving Tsonga bowing and shaking his head - before wrapping up the hold with a forehand winner.

Chance of another break as Tsonga, beads of sweat dribbling down his forehand, toils in the Paris heat. Wawrinka moves level at 30-30, only to slap a meek backhand return into the mesh. And another lame response enables Tsonga to wriggle out of another tight spot.

I don't think Stan Wawrinka is a fan of the sun. The pale-skinned Swiss appears desperate to get back inside the locker room as quickly as possible. The eighth seed rattles out a service hold to love.

"The post-lunch crowd are arriving to give Tsonga their full support, no doubt, so we're almost full on Chatrier. Although not quite.

"Fans are fluttering and cameras are clicking, "Tsonga! Tsonga!" goes up the chant but their man is struggling. Not enough tennis this year, having returned from injury in March, and too much tennis this fortnight mean facing a rampant Wawrinka in 30C is a tall order."

Tsonga has ran 5,000m more than his opponent in the sprint to the last four, so the best way to preserve some energy is by serving well and serving big. The Frenchman dishes up a few generous dollops of sizzling service, leaving Wawrinka with little answer as Tsonga puts the scoreboard into action.

Clinical. Stan Wawrinka is not in the mood to be dishing out any favours to the home favourite. The Chatrier crowd will be looking for chinks in the Wawrinka armoury for Tsonga to exploit - but frankly there doesn't appear to be a weakness. A neat volley wraps up the hold.

"It looks as if Jo-Wilfried Tsonga does not have the same focus and calmness that he had at the start of the match. He is looking deflated and while body language is important for all players, it is especially so for him. He needs to play aggressively and have that bounce around him."

Wawrinka is back on the front foot early in the second set, pinning back his French opponent with some searching forehands. The Swiss wins another break point - what a start to the second set this would be.

Tsonga cautiously eyes up a looping Wawrinka return as he prepares for the smash - this could go badly wrong. But it doesn't as the 14th seed executes it perfectly.

Deuce. Wawrinka earns a second, then a third, break point as Chatrier falls quiet. And the home crowd goes virtually silent - except for a few Swiss yelps of joy - when Tsonga's weak backhand introduces ball to net.

But it is Stan Wawrinka who is already sizzling.

"Tsonga, Tsonga, Tsonga!" The Paris crowd go for the classic Rocky Balboa-style chant of encouragement as their own heavyweight battles to avoid a knockout blow.

Unfortunately for Tsonga, Wawrinka is jabbing away at his weaker backhand and another loose return sets up two set points. The Swiss snaps up the chance at the first opportunity as Tsonga misses the target.

Tsonga sits with a cool towel draped over his head as he considers his approach in the next game. The Frenchman goes for a lighter touch, moving 15-0 ahead with a feathered drop shot then does the same trick in the next point. Wawrinka scurries across the glistening Paris clay to return, but the Swiss's next response - a cheeky lob - bounces past the baseline.

A big Tsonga serve sets up three game points and, after Wawrinka saves one, the home favourite stops the Swiss man taking the first set. For now at least...

Mitch in Glasgow: I don't really 'francey' Tsonga to end 32 years of pain, out'stan'ding tennis from Wawrinka thus far. All about the 'Serb' for Novak, Andy needs to get on top of it in a 'Murray'.

Matt in Surrey: Tsonga is going be the French version of Tim Henman at Wimbledon -The semi final man. Then in a few years a new French version of Andy Murray will come along and win it.

Diana: I don't know who will win this but surely no one dressed like Wawrinka should be allowed into a Grand Slam final, especially in Paris!

What Tsonga really needs right now is a morale-boosting and crowd-stirring break point. And guess what? The Frenchman has got one!

Wawrinka shanks a baseline forehand well wide to give him hope, but then lets out a blood-curdling scream of 'Come onnnnn!' after solving that problem with a forehand winner. An ace gives advantage to the Swiss, who wraps up the hold to deflate Tsonga.

Fortunately for the Frenchman, he only coughs up the one point before a stray backhand from Wawrinka seals the hold.

"The temperature has broken 30C in the stands and must feel a few degrees warmer in court, a long afternoon beckons for Tsonga already if he's to turn this around.

"The single-handed backhand winner in that last game showed up his biggest weakness, fabulous shot though it was. The Tsonga two-hander has always lacked the punch of the very best and Wawrinka is generally safe going at that side - bar the odd moment of Gallic flair."

When Stan Wawrinka dreamt about this match in his sleep last night, he would have visualised an early break followed by a comfortable hold. And that is exactly what the 2014 Australian Open champion has got.

Wawrinka races into a 40-0 lead and, although Tsonga responds with an effortless backhand winner down the line, the Frenchman's joy is brief. That's because his Swiss opponent pulls an ace out the pack to move three games clear.
