  1. Belgium 4-4 GB*published at 14:38 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2015

Another service game whizzes by without so much of a whiff of a break.

Steve Darcis is not the biggest server in the stable, but there was decent variation in his tee-off and David Goffin smashes away the final winner after a patter-cake return.

This has the look of a lengthy afternoon of tennis. Andy Murray next up on the service oche.

Steve Darcis was the man who made walloping Rafael Nadal out of the early rounds of Wimbledon into something of a tradition after Lukas Rosol had done the same the previous year.

He struck gold that day, swinging for the back fence and landed a string of big winners.

One forehand return across court is an ominous reminder, but Jamie Murray sees his serve safely home.

I think I have just spotted a football-style half-half scarf draped over the shoulders of a Belgian fan.

He is in jubilant mood, jigging and gesticulating as the television camera comes into view.

He has just seen Jamie Murray bury a smash into the bottom of the net to allow the home side through to a hold to love.

  4. *Belgium 2-3 GBpublished at 14:26

Andy Murray's service game goes from on court to up on the scoreboard in four quick points.

The last was a beauty though as the world number two pounded down a spicy serve at Steve Darcis and then proved the more dexterous in a little exchange of angled pick-up drop-shots with David Goffin at the net.

I imagine they both could go for the big-money procedures in a game of Operation.

Kim Sears and the rest of the Murray clan are right in among the Last Night of the Proms-style red, white and blue British section.

So far, Kim has resisted the temptation to don some Union Jack bunny ears or a Tam o'Shanter.

Her husband and brother-in-law take the Belgian serve to deuce, but no further.

Not a lot to choose between the two teams so far.

Jamie Murray ushers his service game home without any more scares. But there was enough bite in the Darcis/Goffin returns to suggest they will relish a repeat shot at Murray major.

    Belgium 1-1 GB*

Jamie Murray's serve could be the weak link in Great Britain's pairing today.

A note of concern at 0-15 for the visitors grows to a nagging alarm as Andy and Jamie Murray lunge for the same reflex volley at the net and neither makes clean enough contact. That is 30-30.

And a return splattered across court by Steve Darcis takes the game to deuce.

David Goffin is a good singles player, he's not an experienced doubles player but I think they have been practising a lot and they've taken the risk of picking him with the hope of getting the second point on board.

And Belgium return fire with a service hold of love of their own.

Andy Murray is looking very eager at the net. In fact a little too eager in his attempts to intervene and ease the pressure on his brother at the back of the court.

He dived in on one rally and missed his volley completely at full stretch.

Great Britain start as they mean to go on.

The Murray brothers rattle through the opening service game to love. Hand slaps and bum taps all round as Dunblane's finest head to their stools.

Plenty of British voices in support of the visitors in the stands.

What an occasion, and what an atmosphere. There seems to be even more British fans in than yesterday. There are no neutral fans in here though. Both sets of fans are wearing their teams' colours.

  13. Players on courtpublished at 14:09 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2015

The match may be being staged in a warehouse on an industrial estate outside the city centre, but the Belgian organisers have brought some soul and stardust to proceedings.

Just like yesterday, they drop giant drapes after a hyperbolic countdown to reveal the players on court and ready to warm up.

We are ready to go. Andy Murray with first use of the serving fuzz...

Some might see a young Andy bragging about beating his older brother Jamie in a tennis tournament (see 13:45) as poor form.

Have a watch of this video and you may have more sympathy for Murray minor.

It turns out that the brothers had a series of wrestling belts to crown the household champion. And Jamie only let Andy win the women's strap.

"You wore it proudly though didn't you!?" he remembers.

The list of scalps that this Belgian team has taken en route to the final is impressive.

The list of players that lined up against them is less so. Neither Roger Federer or Stan Wawrinka were in the Switzerland team beaten in the first round.

Milos Raonic and Vasek Pospisil were not part of the Canada team beaten in the quarter-finals.

"It's been a beautiful day in Ghent, with Christmas market preparations well under way, and the less familiar sight of hordes of tennis fans queuing at tram stops.

"There was a lot of shivering and convivial Belgian-British communication as a growing crowd waited at the central station, and long lines on arrival at Flanders Expo as the extra security checks were carried out.

"Another 13,000 should be packed in eventually, but there may be some late-comers for the players to deal with."

The Davis Cup is the big beast in any sporting trophy cabinet.

It has been three foot seven inches high and 105kg in weight since the third plinth was added in 2002 to accommodate the names of the most recent winners.

After Britain defeated France in the 1933 Davis Cup Final at Roland Garros, Henri Cochet and Fred Perry brought it to various nightclubs in Paris.

Unless Leon Smith has a forklift on hire, it is unlikely any British win in Ghent will be celebrated in the same way.

This is how the tie stands after yesterday's action.

The tantalising and unexpected prospect of Great Britain being able to seal victory by the end of today was dangled in front of their fans as world 100 Kyle Edmund went two sets to love up on David Goffin, ranked 84 places higher, in the opening singles rubber.

The 20-year-old's hot streak ran out however and Goffin recovered to win in five before Andy Murray made straight-sets work of Ruben Bemelmans.

The scores on the board at the end of day one in this best-of-five tie: 1-1

"The news broke one hour before play, as scheduled, that Goffin would step in for Coppejans. As the world number 16 in singles it might be no great surprise, but his doubles record amounts to two wins at ATP level in his entire career.

"The absent Ruben Bemelmans had featured in doubles in the last five Belgian ties, so it's an interesting call from captain Johan van Herck."
