Angelique Kerber swats a forehand wide as she tries to buy a pass back into a rally she was retreating in.

    That brings up 30-30.

But the German gets a leg-up from an unlikely source as her serve - picked as a point of weakness - is twice shovelled into the net by Serena.

The first sighting of Serena's famed "warrior mode" as she puts away a forehand volley and double fist pumps with added scream.

    She needs a gee-up.

There are plenty of errors pockmarking her game at the moment with the spectre of matching Steffi Graf's Grand Slam record hanging over this match.

Angelique Kerber forces deuce but is soon ushered out of the match.

Serena Williams stands on tip toes at the front of the court, head bowed.

She has just failed to claw a low, dribbling ball up off the floor to fold out of the game.

She has not again made as many inroads into the Kerber serve as she managed in the German's first service game.

I think Kerber is a player who can deal with the windy conditions as well as anybody. She seems able to adapt her footwork, speed and anticipation.

Serena Williams shreds the skin off the ball with more stinging serves.

She marches from one side of the centre line to the other, loading up and blasting away.

    She holds to 15.

It seems Serena is struggling with the left-handed serve. Kerber is deliberately not using her harder serve, more of a medium serve which is giving Serena some trouble.

Make no mistake, the wind is causing a problem for these two.

I think that suits Kerber because she moves better and can adjust more easily.

Angelique Kerber is finding some devilish angles on her groundstrokes. She has landed with 60% of her first serves so far.

That might need to pump up a little to make things a little easier on her own tee-off.

When Serena serves around 50 per cent, because she has lost these last three Grand Slams, she has got a little more tentative on the second serve.

Her second is not as good as it used to be and that has given the Kerber's of this world the chance to go after it a little more.

Steffi's record has been hanging heavy on Serena since last year at Wimbledon.

She has lost her three previous Grand Slam finals but she is past that now. She has a  different determination, a different look in her eyes.

That is going to be the trouble for Angelique Kerber today.

She is going to feel like she is permanently serving.

Serena rattles through a straightforward hold to 15. Kerber's one point came at 40-0 adrift as Serena crashed a monster serve into the net as she searched for an ace.

She found it on the next point with a ripper down the middle.

The all-you-can-eat buffet that is the Angelique Kerber's second serve is open for business.

Serena Williams clubs away a return winner to set up a third break point.

Kerber hangs tough, fetching, chipping and blocking.

And after eight minutes or so she finally makes her escape to hold serve.

That was a tough grind though.

Serena Williams seems determined to force her way to the net to cut down Angelique Kerber's time and angles.

It works a treat as the world number one stretches Kerber out wide and then deftly picks up a half volley to bring up break point.

Kerber knocks her back from that chance.

    We are to deuce.

Angelique Kerber wins the opening point with a bit of guile, patience and a forehand down the line.

She has to keep Serena moving.

Agnieszka Radwanska took Serena to three in the 2012 final with court-craft and movement. Heather Watson served for the match in their 2015 meeting with similar tactics.

You are not going to beat her with brawn.
