It is amazing how being close to victory can give you a burst of energy. Djokovic finds the stamina to sprint to the net and punish a tired, misplaced effort from Monfils.

And Djokovic then takes the next three points to break Monfils' serve and win the match. That is that. Djokovic is in the final.

There has got to be some ill health out there. I thought Monfils had frozen in the first two sets but we will find out for sure.

Amid the humidity and despite the tired limbs, Djokovic can break out into a wide smile as he holds his serve, the first service game that has been held in the last 20 minutes.

The two-time champion is now only one game from the final.

This is when those hours and hours of fitness training will be paying off and both players will be very glad that they have not had any long matches earlier in the tournament.

Djokovic has had treatment on both shoulders in the last hour, while Monfils will have loved the brief respite while his opponent was being checked out after looking like he could collapse at any moment.

Once again, for the third successive game, the serve is broken. The crucial moment came when Monfils was well placed at the net, but, tired and drained, makes the mistake as Djokovic restores his two-game lead in the fourth.

It could be a case of last man standing in this match. Novak Djokovic, who had treatment on his left shoulder earlier on, has another medical time out as a physio goes to work, this time on his right shoulder.

This time it looks a more serious injury as Djokovic sits there wincing in pain. Monfils takes the opportunity to get out of the heat and humidity for a couple of minutes.

Good news, Djokovic is able to carry on. We continue.

    What is going on?

Djokovic is suddenly looking weary. Maybe it is weather related.

The beginning of the end for Monfils? Nope. He is hunched over in pain after every shot and is repeatedly looking like he will be unable to continue but unbelievably he has just broken back immediately after losing his own serve.

Djokovic's double fault means we are back on serve in the fourth set.

We all have our motivations for being a star and Djokovic wants this New York crowd to like him.

One of the shots of the day from Novak Djokovic has coach Boris Becker up on his feet applauding.

A backhand slice from Monfils sends Djokovic sliding up to the left side of the court, but the Serbian is then sent back to the right back corner. However, he is one of the best players of all time so you can always expect something special.

He slides along and manages to produce a wonderful swivelling, passing shot to move to break point.

Moments later Djokovic gets the break he needs. With Monfils exhausted, that could be the beginning of the end for the Frenchman.

Monfils was booed earlier on, but gives the crowd what they want with another through-the-legs-while-facing-the-wrong-way shot.

But the Hollywood effort does not get an unbelievable ending as Djokovic is perfectly placed, standing at the net, to punch away the attempt on his way to holding his serve.

The world number one is certainly looking the fresher of the two at the moment.

Monfils is leaning over his racquet like a little old man. He looks like he has stomach cramps.

It is hot and sweaty in the Arthur Ashe Stadium and Monfils, whose sweat-covered shirt looks superglued to his body, finds himself 0-40 down.

He has had his critics today, but he is still in there, battling despite regular pauses in a desperate attempt to try and catch his breath.

Like a boxer taking a beating, he is there gasping for air, struggling to breathe yet is still coming up with the goods. Physically he looks completely shattered, earlier he looked a broken man mentally but he then holds his serve with a fantastic effort. Does he have the energy to take this five sets?

We are tied in the fourth, with Djokovic two sets to one ahead.

Djokovic, fresh from a change of shirt after ripping the last one wide one in the last game, is serving at the start of set four but quickly finds himself in trouble.

At deuce, what should be a point-winning smash from the Serbian bounces off the top of the net and the ball sits up nicely for Monfils to belt away to move to break point.

He can't take it though as he dumps a half-volley into the middle of the net.

Scare averted, Djokovic does the rest. And now it is Monfils' turn to call for the doctor. But he doesn't need any treatment and after a quick chat play continues.

It has been the most bizarre performance from Gael Monfils.

He owes everyone an explanation but, for now, that can wait because he is right back in this semi-final.

    *Djokovic 6-3 6-2 3-6 Monfils

Let's not under-estimate how difficult it is to play in these humid conditions.

Monfils, especially, is struggling as he is repeatedly gasping for air, crouched over in pain as the humidity hits hard. Which of these players has the greater engine?

Djokovic moves 0-40 ahead, but then wastes all three break points. Monfils, looking exhausted after every shot, summons up enough energy to take it to set point.

With Monfils one point away from winning a set that no-one expected, Djokovic's shirt is ripped open. Monfils then sends one down the line, fast and accurate and Djokovic can only send his shot at full stretch into the front row of the crowd.

    Monfils wins the set. Wow.

Monfils takes the opening point off the Djokovic serve, but the world number one wins the next three points for 40-15.

But there is some drama in the eighth game as Monfils fights back to force himself into having a set point after a variety of shots, including another use of the slide to great effect.

Monfils has one chance, but does not take it as he is forced on the back foot and a Hollywood through-the-legs attempt goes wrong.

Djokovic survives the scare, but Monfils will be serving for the set next up.
