Kerber, who was already guaranteed to become world number one on Monday, poses with the trophy for a pack of demanding photographers. She moves to trophy to the right, then lifts it up, then kisses it. It's all done with a smile, of course. Red and blue bunting is scattered on the court, Stars and Stripes flags remain on court.
The crowd have filtered out of the stadium, but Kerber's celebrations are only just beginning.

Leading into the US Open a lot of people had Kerber as the favourite and with year she has had, she deserves to be number one and to be the US Open champion.
She has played incredible tennis throughout this fortnight.

"First of all, congrats to Karolina, you've had an amazing two weeks. For sure you have a great future. It's always tought to play against her. I was trying to stay in the moment, be aggressive, I was just trying to enjoy the final. It's an amazing stadium.
"It means a lot ot me. When I was a kid I was always dreaming to be the number one player in the world and to win Grand Slams and today's the day. All my dreams came true today and I'm just trying to enjoy the moment."
Pliskova is asked what she has found out about herself in this final. She replies: "I found out I can play my best tennis on the big stages."
Of Kerber, Pliskova says: "She proved she's the world number one. It was a great match and a great honour to play with you. I knew it was going to be difficult, but I found myself some power in the second set. Even though I couldn't get the win I'm really proud of myself, happy with the way I played in the last two weeks and hopefully many more finals are to come."

Pliskova, in her first Grand Slam final, is serving to stay in the match. Whistles from the fans as they prepare for what could be the final game of this wonderful match.
Not the best of starts for Pliskova. This could be Kerber's time. Pliskova drags a backhand into the tramlines and the German is 30-0 up. The Czech's game faltering - a makeable overhead into the tape - three championship points.
One will do. Pliskova wide. Kerber falls to her knees. She is the US Open champion.

We've crept into the third hour of this match and we're still unsure who is going to win. Kerber rattles off three points in succession - a humdinger of a winner down the line for 40-0. She easily holds, returning to her chair knowing that a slip up from Pliskova in the next game will secure her victory.

A clench of the first from Pliskova as she secures the opening point. She can breathe a little easier, but not for long as Kerber restores parity at 30-30. Messy from Pliskova, a series of stiff backhands at the net, but Kerber cannot take advantage. The second seed goes long and the Czech is off the hook.
From 40-30 to deuce. Pliskova cannot afford to lose this game. Another clench of the first as she forces Kerber off the court. From highs to lows, though, advantage to deuce. Pliskova, and the spectators, gripped by anxiety, but the Czech pulls through, bullying Kerber at the net. A vitally important hold.
