Murray is so much quicker at the net than two years ago.

You can see that the hard work has really paid off.

    Murray/Soares 6-2 2-0 *Carreno Busta/Garcia-Lopez

A lady in the crowd is fanning her face with a piece of paper which suggests it's hot and sticky in Flushing Meadows. Murray and Soares in the shaded end of the court for this game, and the sun might be playing havoc with Carreno Busta's serve - from 40-0 up to deuce, and Soares earns a break point with two rapid volleys at the net. Murray then capitalises to put himself and Soares firmly in control.

    *Murray/Soares 6-2 1-0 Carreno Busta/Garcia-Lopez

Entertaining stuff at the start of this second set, a lengthy rally ending when Murray can't quite return a cute Carreno Busta dipping volley. The second set starting like the first, Murray's serve wobbling - two break points... but the Scot saves one with a sliced mid-court volley. Can the British-Brazilian partnership take this game to deuce? Yup.

An ace to the wings from Murray for advantage, more whispers on the baseline before he serves into the body, ending the Spaniards' hopes.

Murray and Soares have really turned it on after losing that first game.

This was a closer set than 6-2. There were lots of deuce games but Murray and Soares were able to capitalise on their teamship, the way they move around the court.

It was like the way the Bryan brothers play doubles.

    Murray/Soares 6-2 Carreno Busta/Garcia-Lopez*

Doubles is a dangerous sport at times - Murray aiming for the body with a driving forehand and Carreno Busta has to duck for cover. Oof. Garcia-Lopez struggling on his serve, at deuce the Spaniards could be in big trouble. Could be? They are. Soares volleying to set point. Murray with the coup de grace, an outstretched winning volley for the set, their sixth game from seven.

Busta and Garcia got off to a flyer but it has gone wrong for them since then, largely due to the play of Murray and Soares.

Soares serving comfortably, racing to 40-0 at lighting speed. The unseeded Spaniards claw back two points though, giving themselves a chance by bombarding Soares and Murray at the net and the pair can't move their feet quick enough.

From deuce to advantage, a fine overhead from Soares taking him to within a point of holding and he wraps it up with a serve into the ribcage which Garcia-Lopez can only net.

    Murray/Soares 4-2 Carreno Busta/Garcia-Lopez*

Murray lost in the US Open final last year with his then partner John Peers, defeated by the Frenchmen he and Soares beat in the semis. Soares has said experience will help the pair, the Australian Open champs, this time.

“The more you play in this stage of the tournaments, the better you are," the 34-year-old has said. "Being there before, and being there with Jamie, it definitely counts a lot, the experience.”

The experienced pair starting to turn the screw, an angry smash from Soares earning himself and Murray a break point - and they break. Soares keeping the fourth seeds in the rally, Murray seeing off the Spaniards with irrepressible net play. Bravo.

That looks deeply uncomfortable for Jamie Murray.

  10. Medical time outpublished at 17:42 British Summer Time 10 September 2016

    Murray/Soares 3-2 Carreno Busta/Garcia-Lopez

Jamie Murray is taking a medical time out, flat on his back on the floor, receiving treatment on his neck. Pain and pleasure. Soares, meanwhile, is taking this opportunity to remove his sweaty top to replace it with a fresher number, one which smells of spring meadows, or is it lavender? Anyway, something like that, it's difficult to tell from this distance.

    *Murray/Soares 3-2 Carreno Busta/Garcia-Lopez

It's Jamie Murray's turn to serve again. Whispering on the baseline, tennis balls hiding the Scot's mouth so only his partner knows what he's saying. Secret tactics, successful tactics.

A superb rally at 30-15, back and forth, back and forth, brilliant defending by Garcia-Lopez to level at 30-30 - but Murray and Soares ease ahead once again. A dreamy backhand volley from the Brazilian followed by a deft forehand winner which drops on the line and it's game over.

    Murray/Soares 2-2 *Carreno Busta/Garcia-Lopez

There isn't much of a crowd watching this men's doubles final, five or six bus loads - if not more - of empty seats. Marvelous serving from Carreno Busta, holding to love.

Murray and Soares are using the 'i formation,' trying to cut off the best return at the net and force their opponents to play the return he doesn't want to, down the line.

    Murray/*Soares 2-1 Carreno Busta/Garcia-Lopez

All eyes on Soares, the 34-year-old Brazilian ranked eighth in the world in doubles. A steady service game from him, ably supported by Murray's dexterity at the net. Nerves calmed, favourites back in control.

  15. Murray/Soares breaks backpublished at 17:27 British Summer Time 10 September 2016

    Murray/Soares 1-1 Busta/Garcia-Lopez*

Murray/Soares with a chance at 30-15, but the Brazilian biffs a forehand long which allows the Spaniards to level. Pressure still on the Spaniards, however, as Garcia-Lopez double faults to gift the team opposite the net a break point.

A brilliant serve restores parity and we're into deuce. Circus tricks at the net from Murray and Soaras - brilliant, fast, entertaining. A second break point. Soares with a neat return, Busta into the tramlines. Even-stevens.

That was a tentative start from Soares and Murray.

They've got a little glimpse of what they are up against and it is some big hitting.

Carreno Busta and Garcia-Lopez are not your conventional doubles pair.

They have the power of big time singles players.

Jamie and Bruno will need to be aware early on and use their singles abilities to counterweight their opponents and then use their doubles abilities at key moments.

  18. Busta and Garcia-Lopez breakpublished at 17:22 British Summer Time 10 September 2016

    *Murray/Soares 0-1 Busta/Garcia-Lopez

Jamie Murray will open the serving in this final, cap on, the New York sun in his eyes, and the Briton drops the first two points. 0-30 to the Spaniards.

Murray and Soares brilliantly beat top seeds and defending champions Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut in the semi-finals, of course, which makes them favourites for the title.

Mood before the match? Optimistic. Current mood? Nervy as the unseeded Busta and Garcia-Lopez earn two break points. Murray saves one but can do little about the second point, an iffy forehand from his partner and it's an early break of serve.

There's almost always a Murray involved when it comes to the nitty-gritty in Grand Slams. We're not complaining, of course. This time it's Jamie Murray going for a major title, in the men's doubles, with his Brazilian partner Bruno Soares. It is the older brother who will have family bragging rights for this month at least, if he is victorious.

How will they get on? Let's find out.
