    Evans 7-6 (7-4) 2-6 4-6 4-6 Tsonga

Evans decides to go out all guns blazing as he lashes a an inside-out forehand wide and that's it for British men at the Aussie Open.

The crowd love it - giving their 2008 runner-up a tremendous reception.

Evans launches a couple of towels - the only bit of free kit he owns - into the crowd as he trudges off. Boy can he be proud of his last six days of tennis.

Ace down the middle. Nothing you can do about that.

A sizzler low down that Evans can't dig out.

Ace down the middle. Again. Match point.

Evans knows he needs big shots on the Tsonga serve and none of his raffle tickets are picking up prizes.

The game disappears n a flash and the Briton is staring at the exit door.

    Evans 7-6 (7-4) 2-6 4-6 3-4 Tsonga*

See you later - Tsonga flicks a return winner like he's knocking the ball around while walking the dog.

Evans, full of pluck, grits he teeth and pummels through the game. The crowd reaction is understated. in fact any signs of a British fightback are met with general passivity.

    *Evans 7-6 (7-4) 2-6 4-6 2-4 Tsonga

Evans gets to 0-30 but the crowd comes alive as Tsonga gets on the board. So much French support in Hisense - "Allez Tsonga" reads on waving Tricolor.

Here's a lesser-spotted serve an volley winner from the 12th seed and then a pair of crunching forehands to the corner.

There was a flicker of hope for Evans there - Tsonga cruelly snuffed it out.

For once a net cord favours Evans as it bounces up for a forehand and then a leaping backhand overhead.

The fire still burns and he holds with energy and vigour.

Evans, in his off the peg white T-shirt, looking like a custom creation character on a video game, is starting to resemble a fella who has just wandered in from a night out.

It's tiring stuff for the Brit.

Tsonga rattles in two aces for the hold.

Interestingly, Evans has only covered 70 metres more ground than the Frenchman. You wouldn't know it to look at them.

Tsonga has gradually started to overpower Evans through the course of this match. He has managed to neutralise Evans with a high first serve percentage and his returns, while Evans is having to run miles. It is a really tough ask for him as Tsonga looks comfortable.

    Evans 7-6 (7-4) 2-6 4-6 1-2 Tsonga*

Tsonga flutters his tongue with his fingers - a novel way of expressing frustration - as he puts one wide.

The 12th seed, like a steam roller, has taken a while to find top speed. But now he's there, it will take a tank to stop him.

A zonker of a crosscourt forehand return gives him break point.

And there's the break with another deep forehand that Evans can't retreat on to.

Are we looking at a double British exit?

    Federer 0-1 Nishikori*

Djokovic out, Murray gone too.... could this be the chance Roger Federer has been waiting for? It's nearly five years since he won his 17th Grand Slam title, but the 35-year-old Swiss must feel number 18 is now possible.

Stan Wawrinka, Milos Raonic, Rafael Nadal and the man across the net from him right now, Kei Nishikori, might have something to say about that. The Japanese player has four chances to break serve in the opening game before clnching the fifth.

    *Evans 7-6 (7-4) 2-6 4-6 1-1 Tsonga

You get the feeling that Evans is going to stay within touching distance of Tsonga, but get seen off by inches rather than yards as it all just ticks along for the Frenchman.

Tsonga is starting to strategise his points, like Ronnie O'Sullivan in full flow he's always two shots ahead and Evans can do nothing but scamper.

    Evans 7-6 (7-4) 2-6 4-6 1-0 Tsonga*

Evans needs a shot in the arm and, at 0-30, perhaps it this volley winner at the net that will do it.

Forehand winner from the baseline keeps the momentum going and a serve down the middle completes the turnaround.

Evans holds his first game after surrendering it in the last two sets.

    *Evans 7-6 (7-4) 2-6 4-6 Tsonga

Evans keeps Tsonga pinned deep on the baseline and forces the error - and there's a chance for a passing winner... ah, into the net from the Brit.

What a mustard-smothered backhand down the line this is from Evans. He's 15-30... big serve - 30-30.

Evans looks for a blockbuster return but it's long and now another drifts too far. Tsonga takes the set.

    Evans 7-6 (7-4) 2-6 4-5 Tsonga*

Urgh. A 10th double fault of the match for Evans, which shows how much pressure there is on his second serve.

He's still got plenty of bounce in his toes though and pulls away from 30-30 to make Tsonga serve for the set.

Evans has only played 60 tour matches so far and then you look at Tomic with 300 so Evans has a lot to come. He is relatively inexperienced at this level.
