Well, that ended up being a bit more of an interesting finale than we anticipated. Denis Shapovalov will be feeling rotten tonight, umpire Arnaud Gabas will be nursing a headache.

But the bottom line is this: Great Britain are through to the Davis Cup quarter-finals. Next up? France. See you then!

  3. 'Shapovalov must learn emotional control'published at 22:57 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2017

Canada's Davis Cup captain Martin Laurendeau on what he will say to Denis Shapovalov: "There's always a lesson to be learned from the good moments and the worst moments. If he wants to compete at this level he has to keep it together.

"Emotional control is the biggest factor in this game. He must learn the lesson and hope it serves him in the rest of his career."

  4. 'I just heard the crowd fall silent'published at 22:55 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2017

    Shapovalov 3-6 4-6 1-2 Edmund

Canada's Davis Cup captain Martin Laurendeau: "I didn't see what happened. The game was over and I just heard the crowd go silent all of a sudden. I know something was up. I looked at the referee to see what was going on and he was in the middle of it.

"He looks like he is going to be OK and that's the priority here. I'm as surprised as anyone here. It's a shame for sure."

  5. 'Edmund redeemed himself'published at 22:52 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2017

I hope Kyle Edmund will get the credit he deserved.

He did play a tremendous match after the disappointment on Friday when he did not really show up, he redeem himself and played fantastically.

To do that when the pressure is on the line shows what he is about as a player.

Joe Green: Utter stupidity from Shapovalov really disappointed with him. Hope the umpire has a speedy recovery.

Darren Keighley: Turn off for five minutes to run a bath and miss one of the craziest shots in tennis. Great win for Leon Smith and the boys.

Alan Martin: Kyle was on form its a shame it had to end like that but I don't think it would have lasted much longer...

Kyle Edmund has won this match but you don't want to win like this - it's a shocking way for it to finish.

This has taken a lot of gloss off for Kyle Edmund but he was going to win this match anyway. The incident looked worse the second time you saw it.

It was meant to go out of the stands, but Shapovalov got it completely wrong.

Great Britain captain Leon Smith still looks a bit shocked by how his team's passage to the Davis Cup quarter-finals was sealed.

"It is a surprise what happened at the end there and it is a shame," he tells BBC Sport.

"I feel for the young lad. He's a great talent and he has learned a harsh lesson.

"But Kyle, from what we saw on Friday to today, was fantastic. How he prepared, how he took command, his unbelievable serving and he kept pressure on the turns. It was a great performance."

Shapovalov tried to hit the ball high out of the stands and he can't believe what he did. It is dangerous at that speed.

The umpire would not want to have finished the match this way but that could have been serious.

When the balls gets hit at that pace, he obviously wouldn't have seen it coming and there could've been serious damage to the retina. It could've been terrible.

Great Britain's Kyle Edmund on the bizarre ending to his team's win: "It was a strange way to finish. I've never been part of something like that. I was pleased how I was going about processes of the match, I improved a lot from the last match.

"On paper I had an advantage but you don't play on paper, you play on a hard court. Anything can happen in the Davis Cup so I'm very pleased."

"It was a very strange way to finish the match," says Kyle 'King of the Understatement' Edmund.

I think he is still a bit stunned by what has happened to be fair. Not as stunned as the poor umpire, mind.

Yep, the inevitable is announced. A red card offence. Denis Shapovalov receives a default for thumping the ball - accidentally - at the umpire. A stunned silence around the TP Place Arena.

Ouch! That looks sore. The umpire calls for some ice, the tournament director beckons the first aider on. His eye is swollen and red.

Denis Shapovalov is full of apologies. But it is not going to save him or Canada.

But that is just half of the drama! Denis Shapovalov cracks the ball towards the stands in a fit of anger - he's hit the umpire. The arena falls silent. Shapovalov is almost in tears. DQ imminent... Surely?
