Time and time again we have seen this relentless Murray defence earning him a point that he had no right to win.

After losing seven games on the bounce, Murray has turned it around by showing sheer bloody mindedness - and a huge amount of natural talent.

Three breaks of serve in a row we've had now. Murray could really do with stopping that trend to get back on terms. He has the slight advantage of the sun being behind him and therefore not in his eyes as he serves.

A lot of this match has been about hard hitting, especially from Wawrinka, but Murray gets out the drop shot here to good effect.

How has he won this point?! It must be a nightmare playing Andy Murray. He chases everything down. You can never win a point easily. Wawrinka must want to just run over and give him a kick in the shin to slow him down.

Murray holds to get back level.

This is some tennis we are seeing. You can feel the exertion Murray is putting into scrambling from side to side, fishing back the punishing angles that Wawrinka can produce off both forehand and backhand. It's like the most gruelling session of shuttle runs, with the added inconvenience of having to hit a world-class tennis stroke at the end of each one. For two-and-a-half hours and counting.

It is hard to believe Murray is still in this set. He has just retrieved and scrambled enough. The set has been dictated on Wawrinka's terms.

Here is a fourth break point opportunity for Murray. He looks focused, swaying a couple of feet behind the baseline as he waits for the serve.

Anything you can do, Stan! Murray pummels a backhand winner to clinch the break.

He turns and stares at his box as if to say 'how good was that?'.

Stan is continually going for his shots. That is why at the age of 32, that is why he has taken so long to find consistency with his power.

An even bigger opportunity now. He tracks down a Stan smash and turns the tables on his opponent to set up break point.

First one saved by the world number three but here is another chance for Muzza...

Saved again! A 51st winner from Wawrinka! 51! Unbelievable.

    Still deuce. Important moments.

Murray is trying to get himself going after that lapse. "Come on, come on" he says.

Brutal hitting from Wawrinka as he smashes a 96mph forehand through the Parisian air. That only brings him level at 30-30 though. Still an opportunity for Murray.

What happened there? It should have been a routine backhand from Murray. The sarcastic grinning has started.

The Murray second serve has looked tame at times but credit where it is due, this is a very good effort to save a third break point.

That's a bit of luck for the Wawrinka. A shot off the frame again puts him on the brink.

Murray is laughing on the outside but I think there will be anger under the surface.

This won't help. A backhand wide. Murray falls a break behind again.

Good patience from Murray to save those two break points. It was rope-a-dope, sucking Wawrinka into going for it. Clever play indeed.

Oooof that was nervy. Murray saves one break point but then a 21-shot rally has both players in danger. Neither wants to miss, knowing the importance of the point, but in the end Wawrinka blinks first. Deuce.

Murray is going to have to save a third break point though. Pressure right on the Brit here.

The second we thought Murray was letting this slip, he bites back. How often have we seen that from him? Momentum back with the Brit.

He needs to stay solid here though and not throw in any more errors like this one.

The crowd "ooooos" as a Wawrinka ball is called long. It looked tight but the correct call. 15-15.

The service box is a no-go area for Murray. Whenever he lands a ball there Wawrinka pounces and launches a winner.

The latest leads to two more break points...

Who'd have thought that? Clay is one of those amazing surfaces where things can change quickly. As soon as I started feeling comfortable that was a warning sign.

Another error from the Swiss. We haven't seen this since the early stages. He has been so dominant.

It brings up break point and Murray takes it!

Lendl claps from the sidelines. He knows what it takes to win a marathon match here and likes what he sees from his player.

"Let's go," says Murray as he takes the opening point of Stan's next service game.

Nothing he can do with that, another winner from Wawrinka.

That's better. Make him move, Andy. A drop shot is retrieved by Wawrinka but he can do nothing with the follow-up as Murray moves ahead at 15-30.

Stan comes from behind to move within a point of the game but a wayward forehand means we continue to deuce.

Murray sounds like he is putting the most effort in out there, groaning after every point, whereas Stan is silent as he thumps ball after ball from the baseline.

The world number one is annoyed at himself as he pushes a simple backhand long but it makes little difference as he stops the rot by winning the game.

There are still a few seats left but we're approaching capacity now, so lets hope there's plenty left in this for those who have only just made it. You do wonder if they realise they only have a ticket for this match. Despite the numbers, there is a bit of a lull - between Wawrinka winners - as the momentum is all one way now. One redoubtable Brit stands on each changeover and waves a small Union Jack. It's quite poignant.

Andy needs something to fire him up. Wawrinka can't do anything wrong. It is a bit too easy for him though.

But it is only a break and anything can happen.
