A brilliant backhand return gives Shapovalov another break and set opportunity.

But the teenager can only loft the ball over the baseline at full-stretch.

    Deuce. Again.

Edmund staves off the initial break threat and a well-timed forehand gives him the advantage.

Kyle Edmund is serving to stay in the second set but he's making it hard work at 0-30 down.

He looks a little rattled after Denis Shapovalov successfully overturns a line call, but the Briton keeps his head in the game and moves to 40-30.

No, wait. It's deuce again as Edmund has hit wide of the lines.

And now, break and set point to Shapovalov...

Kyle Edmund makes a bit of headway on his opponent's serve at 15-30 but then mishits a backhand.

The pair go into battle on their respective baselines and Shapovalov comes out on top.

He comes to the net to volley home on the next point...but it goes long.

    To deuce we go.

Shapovalov takes the advantage and looks to his coaches' box for some vocal support as he takes the game.

    *Shapovalov 3-6 4-2 Edmund

Kyle Edmund looks up to the blue skies in frustration after screwing up a drop shot at the net.

In contrast, Shapovalov is back punching the air in delight again as he lands a lovely forehand winner.

The teenager slides and scuffs his way across the screechy surface and can't quite squeeze the ball the right side of the lines, and Edmund goes on to hold.

A relief for the Briton, no doubt.

Shapovalov has finally found his stride at Flushing Meadows.

He breezes through his service game to take a 4-1 lead.

Kyle is not keeping his first serve percentage quite high enough and Shapopalov is able to be so aggressive on the second serve return.

A third break point for Shapovalov now. Will it be lucky?

    You betcha.

The Canadian screams with delight after a forehand error from Kyle Edmund hands him first blood in the second set.

Is the tide turning in the Arthur Ashe Stadium?

Shapovalov has a break point - but only very briefly. Two consecutive forehand errors give the advantage back to Edmund, but then the Briton swipes a backhand into the net for a second deuce.

Another break point comes Shapovalov's way. Another wide shot takes us to a third deuce.

Is another big name going to fall in the bottom half of the draw?

Fifth seed Marin Cilic - the highest ranked player left in that half - is down two sets to one against 29th seed Diego Schwartzman.

Cilic is really struggling to win games on his usually very reliable serve. He had it broken four times in the third set and is only getting 57% of his first serves in.

Can he come back? He's going to have to go the distance.

    Shapovalov 3-6 2-1 Edmund*

Shapovalov thinks he's bagged another ace for a 30-0 lead, but Kyle Edmund thinks otherwise. Hawkeye favours the Briton. It was just, just out.

At first, it throws the world number 69 off course as he mis-times what looks like a simple jump/volley.

But he gets his house in order with a superb backhand winner and then watches an Edmund return fly past the baseline.

For the second time, Kyle Edmund holds to love.

Very assured from the British number three.

Denis Shapovalov hasn't returned in a more settled mood, it seems.

He wins the first point of the set with an ace but then double faults.

The Canadian edges to 40-30 and, after a brilliant lengthy rally, he sends a clean, angled backhand past his opponent.

Cue a massive roar from the blonde-haired teenager.

    Shapovalov 3-6 Edmund

A 19-shot rally - me thinks that's the longest yet - ends with a Shapovalov backhand error for 15-15.

Edmund then ends up staring down the barrel of two break-back points from the world number 69.

One is saved. And the second is saved, as Shapovalov nets after an overpowering Edmund forehand. Deuce.

The Briton sends a big serve down which Shapovalov challenges, but he's wrong. Set point.

Edmund takes it as his opponent finds the net again.

    Shapovalov 3-5 Edmund*

Shapovalov gifts Edmund a 0-30 lead as he clocks up unforced error number 11 and number 12.

And soon the Briton has another two break points.

Both players stay pinned behind their baselines in a decent rally. Shapovalov makes the first move in and watches Edmund hit into the net. One break point saved.

But the 18-year-old shanks wide again. Edmund will serve for the set.
