These two both have monster forehands. Bloomin' huge they are.

Edmund sends an absolute corker on to the baseline for a 15-30 lead and then brings up two break points.

The Briton can't return a big Shapovalov serve so one goes to waste and then Edmund slams into the net.

    To deuce we go.

Kyle is a very aggressive player and sometimes it doesn't make for the most entertaining match but the opponent doesn't get any rhythm.

Although you are not playing 20-shot rallies it will be how both of these players will look to play.

A first real sign of pumped-up energy from Denis Shapovalov as he jumps and fist pumps and eats away at Kyle Edmund's service game.

But then the Canadian's mood turns. He's soon shaking his head and muttering in frustration as he goes from 0-30 to deuce.

Oh, wait. Happy Denis is back again. He takes the advantage and break point with a forehand winner.

A double fault from Edmund gives Shapovalov the break back.

The Canadian qualifier smashes a big, arrow-like ace as he opens his second service game.

Shapovalov benefits from an Edmund error to make it 40-15 and he throws down another ace to get his first game under his belt.

A sigh of relief from the 18-year-old.

Kyle Edmund is hoping to extend an impressive run of form that sees him in action for the 10th time in 14 days.

The world number 42 reached the semi-finals in Winston-Salem before the US Open, and has beaten Robin Haase and Steve Johnson in New York.

He is looking to match his achievements from last year by reaching the fourth round of the tournament.

Denis Shapovalov, meanwhile, is enjoying a brilliant second senior season on the tour.

The Canadian qualifier is up to 69th in the rankings after reaching the Montreal Masters semi-finals earlier this month, beating Rafael Nadal along the way.

He earned a straight-set win over eighth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Wednesday's night session, having previously beaten Daniil Medvedev.

Sitting courtside it feels a fair bit warmer than 20C, but nothing that should trouble these two youngsters. The spectators are yet to arrive in force but there's plenty of media interest in this one, among them Brad Gilbert alongside us readying himself for US TV duties - he's backing Shapovalov.

It's almost impossible to see Kyle Edmund lurking in the shadows of Arthur Ashe court. It's so, so dark on his side.

But he's very much there. He's taken a 0-30 lead.

Left-hander Shapovalov lands a storming ace to get off the mark but soon Edmund has break point.

Can he take the first blood? Yes he can! Shapovalov places a forehand long past the baseline.

Kyle Edmund was understandably upbeat after his win over Steve Johnson, and confident that he has enough energy to keep going. Squeezed into the confined space that is Interview Room Three, he told the assembled British media that he is giving it everything after six weeks in North America.

"It's the last tournament so I know that's it," said Edmund. "Basically the mindset is leave everything on court now."

Teenager Denis Shapovalov gained infamy for this incident during the Davis Cup in February.

The Canadian found himself frustrated after being broken by Britain's Kyle Edmund and, well, you can watch below to see what happened next.

The umpire Arnaud Gabas suffered a fractured eye socket in the incident, but in an interview over the summer Shapovalov said the pair had since become good friends.

Speaking before today's match, the 18-year-old said: "I've come a long way from the incident.

"I've been working extremely hard on it. It's definitely helped me mature."

The midtown tunnel was jammed, the freeway more like a car park and the snaking queue of traffic crawled into Flushing Meadows - but the best part of 40,000 spectators have made it here for the day session. "I love rock n' roll!" blasts around the sunbathed grounds - although the temperature is not expected to get much above 21C today. Nice conditions for any Brits planning a hit this afternoon.
