A not too surprising announcement, but disappointing nonetheless for those hanging around Court Five optimistically - Jamie Murray and Martina Hingis will have to come back tomorrow to complete their second-round mixed doubles match. The top seeds lead Peschke and Demoliner 6-0 1-2.

    Nadal 6-7 (3-7) 6-3 1-0 Mayer*

Mayer's break did him good - he's gone 0-30 up early doors.

Nadal fights back with a dinked volley and levels when Mayer's forehand falls the wrong side of the lines.

Rafa comes darting into the net again and takes the point for 40-15.

He sees out his service game by overpowering Mayer with an impressive backhand.

Wale Ibraheem: Nadal needs to find lasting solutions to Mayer's serves. That has been his greatest undoing so far.

No snacks have arrived for us yet, guys. What you playing at?

Leo Mayer has had a well-timed comfort break, and has slowly made his way back to his spot ready for Rafa Nadal to get the third set under way.

    Nadal 6-7 (3-7) 6-3 Mayer

It might have taken him 14 attempts but Nadal got the break in the end. He's consolidated it by winning two games in a row.

Two hours and four minutes on the clock now. I'll hand you over to Caroline Chapman while I head for a power nap. Or a massive coffee. Or both.

In Nadal you are playing against someone who has perfected the art of competing. You never see his head drop and that must be so disheartening if you are Mayer.

  7. Game and second set - Nadalpublished at 00:30 British Summer Time 3 September 2017

    Nadal 6-7 (3-7) 6-3 Mayer

The first set point is saved as Nadal's forehand finds the net.

Ooh, and the second too, with an almighty crack of a shot down the line from Mayer.

He can't save the third one, though! Nadal crouches and pumps his fists as his box get to their feet. We're all square...

There's vamos and fist-pumps all over the show from Nadal as he hammers a forehand winner past Nadal.

The world number one looks more comfortable now, moving with ease, and he brings up three set points in no time at all...

  9. Long night aheadpublished at 00:27 British Summer Time 3 September 2017

    Piers Newbery
    BBC Sport at Flushing Meadows

We have a bit of an issue out on the grounds now that play has halted everywhere but Ashe. Normally at this stage spectators would be queuing to get in as the night session starts, but with Federer v Lopez some way off there are just huge queues for every stand and shop going. There is no chance at the moment that the later Keys v Vesnina match could be moved, so a very late, cold night is looming.

We're at deuce once again as this time Mayer's advantage goes begging.

Break point number 13 of the match, now, for Rafa, as the Argentine errs on the forehand.

Oh! Nadal flaps at the second serve from Mayer, sending over a really loose shot, and Mayer responds by leathering a winner back at him. Deuce. Again.

It is unbelievable to see Nadal missing so many break points.

It is very rare to see him on the verge of breaking a racquet. He must be on the edge.

No idea, Dennis, but he's done it again with another ace down the T to open his service game.

Ooh, he gets a smash all wrong there, looking for that extra oomph and instead slapping it inbetween the tram lines.

A stonking winner from Nadal is caught by a man in a Roger Federer cap, who presumably has settled himself in a comfy chair somewhere. He'll be parked there for a while.

Here's break point Nadal, though, a big forehand from Mayer going out...
