    *Nadal 6-7 (3-7) 0-1 Mayer

Bang! Mayer opens the second set with a big ol' ace.

Rafa sends a wild forehand long over the baseline for 30-0, but then Mayer does the same.

A lovely grunting rally follows, this is epic! Mayer comes out on top after 19 shots for 40-15.

The Argentine holds with a jumping smash. He is loving life out there.

Andrew Neil: Right, so 1hr and 5mins for that set. I'll just put my alarm on for 4am and should see the start of Rog's match

Dom Breslin: Nadal pays the price for not taking his break point chances. Shellshocked atmosphere on Ashe.

Rafa's nipped off for a comfort break. Just an hour and three minutes for that opening set...

    Nadal 6-7 (3-7) Mayer

Very much like the look of Leo Mayer. He saved six break points in that set en route to clinching the tie-break. His backhand looks good.

Nadal, meanwhile, looks out of rhythm. He's not been able to cobble together a series of really threatening shots.

Another unforced error from Nadal there. I am not sure what to make of this other than Mayer is taking it to Nadal and making him do a lot of running.

    Nadal 6-6 (3-6) Mayer*

Nadal has a heated discussion with the ball boy over a towel. He looks really agitated here.

The third seed swipes into the net again to hand Mayer four set points.

Nadal fends off one of them with a huge serve.

  8. Tie-breakpublished at 23:27 British Summer Time 2 September 2017

    *Nadal 6-6 (2-5) Mayer

Into the net again from Nadal! This time with the back hand as Mayer comes tip-toeing forward. It's been scrappy from Rafa so far.

A change of ends, and then bam! Another ace down the T from Mayer.

    Nadal 6-6 (2-3) Mayer*

How will Nadal respond to that thunderbolt?

Back on serve, the Spaniard levels when Mayer lands a dropshot into the net.

But then Nadal hands his opponent a narrow lead when he swipes into the net. A bad miss, that.

That's Mayer's fourth ace of the set. He has an unusual serving technique, often with the racquet open at the back.

  11. Tie-breakpublished at 23:24 British Summer Time 2 September 2017

    *Nadal 6-6 (1-2) Mayer

Mayer bounces the ball a few times and fluffs his first serve, before Nadal overhits the second.

Ace! What a time to chuck one of those into the mix.

  12. Tie-breakpublished at 23:23 British Summer Time 2 September 2017

    Nadal 6-6 (1-0) Mayer*

Rafa does his usual sniffs and twitches before going to serve.

He earns the first point when Mayer's forehand goes long.

    *Nadal 6-6 Mayer

Hello. This is good stuff from Mayer, a forehand volley the sweetest of the lot, and he holds to love.

    Into a tie-break we go.

    Nadal 6-5 Mayer*

Nadal bashes down his first ace but Mayer produces two beautiful passing shots, one from the forehand, one from the backhand, to claw it to 40-30.

Mayer tries a lob and Nadal, running backwards, smashes an overhead winner in response.

    *Nadal 5-5 Mayer

Two game points for Mayer, and Nadal snaffles one back as Mayer gropes for a forehand and finds the foot of the net.

Another double fault! That takes us to deuce, but Mayer claws it back with a cross court winner. Even stevens.

Rafa is up and down at the moment. His serve is patchy, he's sitting at a low 60%, but he did just come back from 0-30 in that game and he got himself out of trouble.

It's a similar feel to his first round match. He's not quite there yet. Credit to Mayer though, he's playing at a good level.

    Nadal 5-4 Mayer*

Nadal saves two points off his serve as Mayer's loopy forehand goes long, and moves to 40-30 as Mayer's backhand drifts out.

He holds with a smash that Mayer tries to chase down and ends up nearly flattening a ball boy in the process.

We're seeing how good Mayer is right now. He was 21 in the world a few years ago and you can see why. He gets power behind the ball, he can hit it flat, he can get winners and he's got a good first serve.

    *Nadal 4-4 Mayer

Mayer advances to the net for a volleyed winner, but lets his advantage slip with a slip on the forehand.

A lovely forehand down the line from the Argentine takes him to 40-15, and gets an approving nod from his box, but he comes forward and ends up watching Nadal's two-handed backhand go sailing past him. He holds, though, as Nadal's whippy forehand strays long.

You thought British interest was over in the singles? Think again (sort of), as Roger Federer will be tuning up for tonight's third-round clash with Feliciano Lopez by hitting with Ken Skupski, Liverpool's finest and, like Lopez, a left-hander.
