    Edmund 6-2 6-2 5-3 Istomin*

That's the biggest roar of the day from Kyle Edmund, as he scurries on to a lengthy Denis Istomin forehand to return with power and precision to win the point.

The British number two follows up with an ace, and Istomin can't deal with a punchy second serve on the next point.

Another ace. Another game ticked off. One away from the last 32.

Each Edmund break point precedes Istomin digging in once more.

The British number two has had three opportunities in this game, but not taken any.

Istomin powers a big forehand down the line to edge ahead, and holds serve when an Edmund forehand on the run slams into the net.

    Edmund 6-2 6-2 4-2 Istomin*

Kyle Edmund pulls back to deuce, and that soon becomes advantage when a Denis Istomin drops a slice volley into the tramlines.

Edmund goes wide with his return on the break point chance. The pair exchange points. Deuce three, only for Istomin to miscue another forehand.

    Break point Edmund.

    Edmund 6-2 6-2 4-2 Istomin*

Can Denis Istomin salvage anything from this match? He's looked off the pace, especially since that medical timeout in the first set.

The Uzbek does convert a smart backhand winner down the line, before drawing Edmund in with a drop shot and casually lobbing him on the volley. One for the highlights reel.

Kyle Edmund and Denis Shapovalov are obviously using the same wardrobe...

It's working for both, mind, as Edmund is looking as much if not more in control as his Canadian counterpart.

Edmund soars through another service game to go 4-2 up in the third set on court 13.

Denis Shapovalov has raced through the third set against 2008 finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, taking it 6-1 for a two sets to one lead.

Caroline Wozniacki is a break up at 3-1 in the second set against Jana Fett, having lost the first 6-3.

Without wanting to get ahead of ourselves.... Edmund is well on course to reach the third round here for the first time and if he does, next up will be world number 61 Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia. First-round defeats for eighth seed Jack Sock, 18th seed Lucas Pouille (and Edmund's win over 11th seed Kevin Anderson) have really opened up this section of the draw.

Meanwhile, spectators at Melbourne Park enjoy a beautiful summer's afternoon while athletic types run around for their entertainment. Perfect.

    *Edmund 6-2 6-2 3-2 Istomin

Kyle Edmund has been ferocious at times in this second round meeting.

He hammers a forehand past Denis Istomin before the Uzbek can blink, but it's not enough to halt the Istomin serve.

    Edmund 6-2 6-2 3-1 Istomin*

Denis Istomin is working some nice positions, but his execution hasn't been at it today.

The Uzbek opens up Kyle Edmund, but drags a forehand wide and soon finds himself 30-0 down.

Another loose Istomin forehand drops long, and the 31-year-old follows up with a miscued backhand to give Edmund the hold.

Denis Istomin, glasses and headband on, looks at his well-wrapped feet as a sloppy backhand meets the tape to give Kyle Edmund a 0-30 lead.

Edmund dances round a mid-court ball before whipping it beyond Istomin for three break points.

    He only needs one.

    Edmund 6-2 6-2 1-1 Istomin*

Straight back at it for Kyle Edmund. A powerful first serve rattling the wrists of Denis Istomin.

The 23-year-old then cups a backhand wide, he thought Istomin's return was long.

An ace follows - postage stamp stuff.

Now the chants are in Kyle Edmund's favour... "let's go Kyle, let's go..."

Edmund wobbles backwards, but manages to successfully return a Denis Istomin stroke that landed near his feet, and then goes 30-0 up.

That's a wayward forehand from the Brit, though. Out of character today.

Straightforward service game for Denis Istomin.

For the first time in this match, he takes the lead in a set.

Two days ago Belinda Bencic was celebrating knocking out Venus Williams but the Swiss 20-year-old hasn't been able to back up that win, going out 6-1 6-3 to Thai qualifier Luksika Kumkhum.

A big shock could be brewing on Rod Laver - second seed Caroline Woziacki has lost the first set 6-3 to world number 119 Jana Fett.

In a really attractive match on the Margaret Court Arena, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has just levelled up against Canadian 18-year-old Denis Shapavalov - both sets so far won 6-3.

In the middle of that set Edmund got a little sloppy but he turned it around and played some great tennis. More of the same.

  18. Game and second set Edmundpublished at 03:34 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2018

    Edmund 6-2 6-2 0-0 Istomin*

Edmund cruises into a 40-0 lead, that's three set points.

The British number two finds the net from the first, but a huge forehand proves too hot for Istomin to handle as it flops off the world number 60's strings.

    There's the two-set lead.

Impressive stuff so far from Kyle Edmund, now he has the chance to serve for a two-set lead.

He toys with Denis Istomin, pushing him one way and then the other, before nailing a forehand down the centre of the court but behind the despairing run of the Uzbek.

Lovely. Kyle Edmund opens up his body and kisses the white of the line with a pinpoint forehand to go a double break up in this second set.
