    *Edmund 5-2 Istomin

Kyle Edmund to serve for the first set then. How he'd love to put this one on the board before the 25-minute mark.

Denis Istomin hasn't quite read the script, eating up a slower second serve with a punishing forehand.

Edmund pulls level, and then saunters into the net with Istomin on the run before smashing down the centre of the court.

    *Edmund 5-2 Istomin

First fist pump of the match from the pink-clad Kyle Edmund, and it's to celebrate a beautifully taken backhand winner down the line.

He gets good depth on his return from the next point, and Denis Istomin clips it long.

    A double break for Edmund.

It's the first time there has been any pressure and Edmund played some big points there. It seems that Kyle is hitting towards Istomin's forehand.

    Edmund 4-2 Istomin*

Just wide from Denis Istomin, that was almost a fantastic response down the line while stretching to reach a Kyle Edmund forehand.

The Brit does not give Istomin any chance with the next point, he converts the advantage to hold.

Classic live text commentator's curse there, if that's a thing? As soon as I praise Edmund's serve, he double faults.

The 23-year-old chases Denis Istomin on to his forehand with some solid baseline strokes to edge back into control, but the Uzbek moves swiftly to the net to volley a sliced winner that takes us to deuce.

    *Edmund 3-2 Istomin

Kyle Edmund steadies himself on the baseline, tosses the ball high into the Melbourne sky and takes the point at the second attempt.

    He's serving well.

The British number two sends Istomin wide with the next, skips towards the net but can only cannon a forehand against the tape.

    *Edmund 3-2 Istomin

Edmund is taking this match to Istomin early, looking aggressive with his groundstrokes, but he slightly overcooks a backhand and then can't deal with the pace of an Istomin serve.

The world number 60 hammers down an ace to hold.

    Edmund 3-1 Istomin*

Kyle Edmund is based in the Bahamas these days, so he won't be fazed by the modest heat in Melbourne.

His serve is certainly hot at the minute. The British number two powers his way to a 40-0 lead, and adds a second serve ace to polish off another service game.

Denis Istomin hasn't won a point off it yet.

A crosscourt backhand slice from Kyle Edmund just misses its target and that will give Denis Istomin the chance to serve out the game.

Edmund flings himself to the right of the court, but wraps a forehand with little back lift into the net.

So who is Kyle Edmund's opponent, Denis Istomin?

The 31-year-old Uzbek reached a career-high 33rd in the world six years ago, but it was last year at this stage of the Australian Open when Istomin took the headlines after knocking out defending champion Novak Djokovic.

Currently sitting 60th in the world, the 6ft 2 Russian-born right-hander has been playing tennis since the age of five and boasts a degree in physical culture.

Oh, and he's a Real Madrid fan.

  17. 'Edmund in three sets'published at 02:32 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2018

David Felgate on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra: "The seeds in this side of the draw are decimated, all gone, and Kyle is one of the reasons. It's tough to always back it up.

"But if we took this as a first round match, we would think it is a good draw for Kyle.

"I am going to say Kyle Edmund in three sets."

  18. Path clear for Edmund?published at 02:30 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2018

Monday's victory over Kevin Anderson not only gave Edmund a landmark win in Grand Slam terms, it also opened up an opportunity to make real inroads at Melbourne Park.

A flurry of surprise results have left the Briton as the highest-ranked player in his section of the draw, until the quarter-final stage at least.

His first-round victory went a long way to banishing thoughts of several matches that got away from the 23-year-old last year when he was in a winning position.

He is now presented with an opportunity to break new ground at a Grand Slam, with a run to the fourth round of the US Open in 2016 his best effort to date.

"I put a lot of time and effort into this sport," he said.

"It takes up a lot of your life. When stuff like that happens, you're disappointed. You want to fix it.

"At the end of the day, it's a game of winning - it's a business."

This is just the warm-up for later in the week - but it's pretty warm. Heading into the early afternoon the temperature is already nudging 30C and the deckchairs in Garden Square are starting to look less appealing than the trees that surround them.

"Four seasons in one day" is how Melbourne is often described, although everything is relative if you're visiting from the UK. What we do know is that over the next couple of days we are likely to be seeing on-court temperatures exceeding 40C. That will be a blow to some players' chances but if they can battle through, next week is expected to settle into a more reasonable run of mid-20s.
