    Edmund 6-2 4-2 Istomin*

A big point for the Uzbek when he needed it most, sending Edmund on the run and watching on as the Brit fails to pick up a backhand response.

Edmund rallies back to deuce, and then Istomin finds the net from close quarters to hand his opponent a break point.

It's saved, but a grunt and a mammoth forehand give Edmund another chance.

And that's deuce. Istomin slings a two-handed backhand into the tramlines.

    Edmund 6-2 4-2 Istomin*

A shake of the head from the British hopeful, he's frustrated by a forehand that clocks the tape and drops on to his side of the net.

Denis Istomin is buoyed by that and knocks down a winner from deep on the next point, following up with a meaty serve to pave the way to a hold.

No... Edmund claws two points back with some good length on his returns.

That's another efficient service game complete, another hold for Kyle Edmund.

    *Edmund 6-2 3-2 Istomin

"Let's go Denis" is the chant from a few courtside fans.

Kyle Edmund silences the Istomin support with a big first serve that barely leaves the ground following the bounce.

Edmund has time to watch a high ball, lets it bounce and then smashes it beyond a helpless Istomin to go 30-15 up.

    *Edmund 6-2 3-2 Istomin

Change of approach from Denis Istomin, a second serve with plenty of top spin that troubles Kyle Edmund.

The Uzbek holds to love. Probably his most comfortable service game so far.

  7. Postpublished at 03:19 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2018

    Edmund 6-2 3-1 Istomin*

Denis Istomin is almost playing this one from the stand behind his end, he just about manages to coax a response to the Edmund pressure, but the Brit hammers down a huge volley to finish the point and hold.

  8. Postpublished at 03:18 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2018

    *Edmund 6-2 2-1 Istomin

It's hot out there, and Kyle Edmund uses the change of ends to wipe some sweat from under his cap.

The British number two fizzes a winner out of Denis Istomin's reach, and then pushes the Uzbek deep beyond the baseline before nonchalantly finishing the point with a deft volley.

    *Edmund 6-2 2-1 Istomin

A bit more on the serve from Denis Istomin, who shows he can mix up his repertoire with deft hands to execute a drop shot that Kyle Edmund can only poke long on the stretch.

Edmund's reply to a powerful Istomin forehand also drops long, and the world number 60 is off the mark in the second set.

  10. Postpublished at 03:13 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2018

    Edmund 6-2 2-0 Istomin*

Another lovely forehand from Kyle Edmund, who coaxes Denis Istomin from side to side before whipping a shot into the vacated space.

He swiftly moves into a 40-0 lead, but then hooks a backhand slightly long from deep.

That's the only blip in another solid service game. Edmund holds.

    *Edmund 6-2 1-0 Istomin

Two break points for Kyle Edmund.

Denis Istomin is already looking fatigued. Edmund cracks a weak first serve back towards the Uzbek with plenty of added interest, and it fizzes beyond Istomin.

Edmund is piling on the pressure, he is dominating with this forehand. Istomin doesn't look like he fancies this to me. I'm not sure he is going to finish this match.

    Edmund 6-2 0-0 Istomin*

Well that timeout hasn't sapped any of the sting from Kyle Edmund's game, as the British number two strides into the net and volleys a perfectly placed winner, right on the line.

He moves into a 0-30 lead, before Istomin finds his range with a neat backhand.

Strapping has been applied to both of Denis Istomin's ankles, and he's finally getting his socks back on.

Kyle Edmund was bouncing around a moment ago, but uses the opportunity to now sit down and takes a drinks break.

This must have been more than three minutes?!

I can confirm it is toasty courtside, with roasting very much on the horizon. Elina Svitolina just said in press she felt like she was going to “melt” during her match and the temperature will only rise for the next couple of hours.

Seats are still at a premium on court 13, but fortunately Team Edmund have four set aside among the throng. New coach Fredrik Rosengren is giving plenty of vocal support - “Come on Kyle, hard work! Great shot!”

Tennis coach David Felgate on 5 live sports extra

It wasn't just winning the set, it was the manner he did it. It was nearly perfect tennis. At the moment, Istomin has no answers. Great play from Kyle. He's really taking him to the cleaners.

  20. Game and first set Edmundpublished at 02:59 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2018

    Edmund 6-2 0-0 Istomin*

Another Istomin return drifts long, two set points for Edmund.

The Brit's first serve clips the net - let - the second is good, and dollied back to mid court by Istomin.

Edmund punishes it in emphatic fashion, putting everything into a backhand crosscourt winner to take the set.
