    *Kyrgios 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 3-3 Tsonga

That's a supremely good winner from Tsonga, whipping a forehand from the centre of the court to juts on the tramlines, the ball pirouetting out of Kyrgios' reach.

    A love hold for Tsonga.

Ace. "Come on!" shout Kyrgios and the crowd respond accordingly.

And he'll keep his nose in front as Tsonga nets his backhand.

    Kyrgios 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 2-2 Tsonga*

Shouts from both players - annoyance from Tsonga, emotion from Kyrgios - as Tsonga slaps consecutive forehands well out of bounds.

Kyrgios tries a passing shot but Tsonga, up to the net, meets it with the most delicate of backhands.

That's better from Tsonga, forcing Kyrgios to move, and we'll head to deuce.

    *Kyrgios 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 2-2 Tsonga

Tsonga races to 40-0, and Kyrgios decides to change his racquet, to see if that can change things up.

It doesn't. A love hold for Tsonga.

    Kyrgios 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 2-1 Tsonga*

A grunt of approval from Kyrgios as Tsonga loosely returns his service game.

The third serve is super quick - 220kmh, to be exact - and the Australian keeps up the momentum with a love hold.

    Ace. Backhand volley.

    That'll be a hold for Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

    *Kyrgios 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 1-0 Tsonga

A huge cheer as Nick Kyrgios gets on the board, courtesy of an overworked forehand from Tsonga.

And Kyrgios responds by timing the pants off a backhand swipe that Tsonga, coming up to the net, can only stand and watch spin past him.

Big serves from Tsonga but that's a poor swipe of a forehand. Hello, deuce.

Feet up on the dashboard, cruise control engaged, Kenny G on the stereo.

Rafael Nadal is closing fast on the last 16 and 24th seed Argentine Diego Schwartzman.

    Kyrgios 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 1-0 Tsonga*

    "Ah non."

Jo Wilfried Tsonga knew it was a duffer as soon as it left his strings. That forehand hooked wide lets Nick Kyrgios off the hook and to 30-15.

    Another error. 40-15.

And Krygios punches away a jumbo-sized backhand through Tsonga's defences to seal the game.

    Zut alors.

A small child is interviewed on the big screen between sets about doing the coin toss for the next match - "Are you looking forward to it?" "Yep." "So, see you down there then?" "Yep." I like her style, all business.

Nick Kyrgios looks phenomenally unimpressed as Will Smith stands up and waves to the crowd, drawing the biggest cheer of the night, while we await the return of Tsonga from his comfort break.

It's blustery and, dare I say it, a little cool on Rod Laver Arena now as we approach 9pm. I doubt many here packed a jumper.

    Kyrgios 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 Tsonga*

Will Smith uses the changeover to work the room, waving to the crowd, posing for selfies and generally turning on that 1000-watt charm.

Jo Wilfired Tsonga has nipped to the loo.

Anyway, he is back. Set three a-go-go.

When you see Jo-Wilfired Tsonga in this form - hitting the lines at 200km/h - he is a sight to behold.

It is hard to say it won't be a Rafael Nadal v Roger Federer final eventually, especially when you consider six-time champion Novak Djokovic is coming into the tournament on the back of an injury.

    And there's the set!

Fine work from Tsonga to fight his way back into things - he looked full of energy, while Kyrgios' concentration may have just dropped a tad.

    *Kyrgios 7-6 (7-5) 4-5 Tsonga

Tsonga, serving to take the second set, bounces up and down on the balls of his feet before battering a winner cross court.

0-15, and it's soon to 0-30 as a Kyrgios backhand finds the net.

  17. Postpublished at 09:31 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2018

    Kyrgios 7-6 (7-5) 4-5 Tsonga*

Tsonga knows he's overcooked a return from the second it leaves the racquet, and Kyrgios marches to a 30-0 lead.

Now he goes into the net with his forehand, and despite a blip, Kyrgios holds.

    *Kyrgios 7-6 (7-5) 3-5 Tsonga

Up to the net comes Kyrgios, doing the splits in his attempt to reach a drop shot, but he can't get there in time.

And in the blink of an eye, with some fine serving, Tsonga holds.

I think that Nick Kyrgios will always have that angry streak within him. It is just a case of if he can channel it as he needs to.
