Kerber's lost a bit of energy here. Can she hold her serve?

    *Kerber 6-1 2-2 Sharapova

Angelique Kerber crouches low and angles a shot into the corner of the court, and Maria Sharapova's return drifts wide.

That's glorious from Sharapova though, chasing down an angled return from Kerber and slapping a winner of her own. A long forehand from Kerber allows her to hold.

  3. Djokovic breaks but is limpingpublished at 09:25 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2018

    *Djokovic 6-2 3-1 Ramos-Vinolas

Novak Djokovic is battling with his body here and coming out on top.

When the ball is in play he looks fine but when the point finishes he is hobbling and shaking his left leg. The six-time champion snatches another break of serve but there must be a questions to be asked about how deep he can go into this match and the tournament altogether.

I think Kerber can feel the energy coming from the other side. The demeanour of Sharapova has been pretty good and you wouldn't know the scoreline by looking at her.

  5. Sharapova breaks backpublished at 09:21 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2018

    Kerber 6-1 2-1 Sharapova*

A long, long rally that Kerber looks to be out of, but somehow she forces his way back into it as Sharapova's forehand finds the net.

The second is saved - but that's overhit by Kerber! Sharapova claws her way back into the match.

    Kerber 6-1 2-0 Sharapova*

    Huh.

First a double fault, and then an attempted angled winner, go awry for Kerber. Oh, and now she's netted! It's Sharapova's turn to have three break points.

Sharapova looks like she has no answer to this and is playing Serena Williams.

    *Kerber 6-1 2-0 Sharapova

    Long from Maria Sharapova!

That was a loopy, nothing sort of strike from Sharapova. She's never one to look flustered but she looks a bit low on ideas at the minute.

Sharapova is trying to end the points too early and hitting the ball too flat. Against someone like Kerber you have to be prepared to play a few more shots.

  10. Postpublished at 09:17 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2018

    *Kerber 6-1 1-0 Sharapova

Maria Sharapova much prefers it when she can hurry Angelique Kerber along a bit as she has time to put away a loose backhand.

That's great from Kerber though, hitting the ball so hard from the back of the court, and Sharapova's forehand finds the net for 30-15.

And there's the double fault from Sharapova. Two break points...

  11. Postpublished at 09:14 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2018

    Kerber 6-1 1-0 Sharapova*

An attempted winner down the line from Maria Sharapova finds the net, before she makes a horrible mess of a forehand.

Long and wide goes Sharapova, and Angelique Kerber holds first up.

  12. Medical timeout for Djokovicpublished at 09:13 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2018

    Djokovic 6-2 2-1 Ramos-Vinolas*

Uh oh. How serious is this for Novak Djokovic? He's called for the trainer at the start of this second set.

Djokovic is now laid on his front with the physio applying plenty of pressure to his lower back. Now the Serb switches over onto his back. The physio is now rotating his left leg and this doesn't look particularly comfortable.

I'm not sure what the problem is. Lower back or hip maybe.

There's no look of panic on Sharapova's face despite what's happening. She's composed and will firmly believe she can get back into this match because she's such a fighter.

  15. Game and first set - Kerberpublished at 09:10 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2018

    Kerber 6-1 Sharapova

    Wallop.

After 29 minutes, Angelique Kerber has taken the first set against Maria Sharapova. Astonishingly good hitting from the German, who came out firing.

  16. Postpublished at 09:09 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2018

    *Kerber 5-1 Sharapova

    Too good from Angelique Kerber.

Maria Sharapova comes up to the net, trying to hurry her opponent, but the ball lands right where Kerber wants it and she smashes a winner beyond her.

    Three set points...

  17. Crouching Kerber thrills crowdpublished at 09:07 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2018

    Kerber 5-1 Sharapova*

    Piers Newbery
    BBC Sport at Melbourne Park

Kerber has looked back to her best since the start of the year and she's backing it up on the big stage - fizzing returns at Sharapova's feet, crouching at the baseline to absorb the Russian's pace and send it hurtling back at her.

Several of the German's shots have drawn gasps from the crowd, who seem to be backing the 2016 champion over the 2008 winner so far. Early days though.

  18. Postpublished at 09:07 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2018

    Kerber 5-1 Sharapova*

Better from Maria Sharapova. She crashes back everything Kerber sends her way with increasing power, and it pays off as Kerber nets.

A pacey first serve gets Kerber out of a bit of trouble for 30-30, before she wallops a forehand beyond Sharapova.

Again, there's nothing Sharapova can do as she runs to her left, and Kerber crashes the ball to her right. Kerber is a game away from the first set.

  19. Postpublished at 09:03 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2018

    *Kerber 4-1 Sharapova

Sharapova is being overpowered by Kerber, who looks in terrific shape. So much big hitting from the German.

She's won 21 points so far, in comparison to Sharapova's 11. And here she is to serve...

The one thing Sharapova could try is get more depth on her shots. She could try and go deep down the centre of the court because Kerber is so good on the run.
