  1. Game and first set - Berdychpublished at 08:27 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2018

    Del Potro 3-6 Berdych

    Hello!

Tomas Berdych has recovered enough from his little outburst at the umpire to take the first set against Juan Martin del Potro. An 80% win percentage behind his first serve seems to have served Berdych well.

    *Djokovic 1-0 Ramos-Vinolas

An entertaining little tussle for Novak Djokovic first up.

Djokovic had three break points against Albert Ramos-Vinolas but a series of backhand errors allowed Ramos-Vinolas to force deuce.

    Kerber v Sharapova

Kerber and Sharapova are the only two Grand Slam champions remaining in the women's draw.

Sharapova, who claimed the title in Melboune ten years ago, has not won a Slam since her French Open crown in 2014.

Kerber won both the Australian and US Open in 2016, but she had a horror run of form last year that saw her relinquish her world number one title.

We pretty much know Angelique Kerber is back. She's been so businesslike and she's better than 2016 in the way she's playing. She's going to have her hands full against Maria but she is my pick in that match.

    Kerber v Sharapova

Angelique Kerber has dedicated herself to putting memories of last year behind her.

She hasn't lost a match this year, and kicked things off in style by winning the Sydney International

She beat Venus Williams and Dominika Cibulkova on her way to the final, before overpowering Ashleigh Barty to claim her 11th career title.

  6. Berdych breaks Del Potropublished at 08:15 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2018

    *Del Potro 2-4 Berdych

There's a bit of a kerfuffle over on Hisense Arena.

Tomas Berdych, who has just broken Juan Martin del Potro, is very unhappy about an overrule that has seen a point being awarded against him. He's up a break on del Potro.

    Djokovic v Ramos-Vinolas

Novak Djokovic's return to the scene has brought him face-to-face with Albert Ramos-Vinolas today.

Djokovic is searching for his seventh Australian Open title, and standing between him and a place in the last 16 this time is a player he has a 4-0 record against.

This is already Ramos-Vinolas' best performance in Melbourne - he's fallen in the first round five times in seven appearances.

The left-hander is bidding for his third victory against a top 20 player at a Slam, after previously beating Milos Raonic and Lucas Pouille at Roland Garros.

  8. End of the Barty Partypublished at 08:10 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2018

After two days of unsurprisingly modest attendances, relatively speaking, the return to non shoe-melting temperatures has seen a bumper crowd as the weekend has begun. A day-session record 62,674 people have passed through the gates, and most of them seem to be currently rubbing shoulders in Garden Square jostling for space.

The big screen has just delivered the end of Ashleigh Barty's Australian Open - "the Barty Party is over", as the local TV reported - and now it features Novak Djokovic going through his pre-match routine in the tunnel by Margaret Court Arena. It involves two tennis balls, a wall, and super-fast reflexes.

Andy Murray has been staving off jet lag with a Twitter Q&A, external in the early hours of the morning.

Questions ranged from the weird to the wonderful - my favourite was when he was asked to describe Juan Martin del Potro in three words.

    He opted for "BFG."

  13. Rain on the way?published at 08:01 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2018

    Piers Newbery
    BBC Sport at Melbourne Park

There has been no talk of extreme heat policies or ambient temperature today - as we head into the evening it's a pleasant 23C, and there is even talk of some rain this evening and tomorrow.

Fortunately we are blessed with enough cover (Rod Laver, Margaret Court and Hisense Arenas each have a roof) to guarantee the singles matches will continue unaffected by this stage.
