    *Seppi 7-6 (7-4) 3-4 Edmund

That's a game that'll give Kyle Edmund a boost. Seppi makes a mess of returning a body serve, a tactic we haven't seen used by the Briton so far, and then the Italian moves a little slowly to a forehand on the stretch.

On the brink of the game Edmund misses with his first serve but then wallops down a second-serve ace.

    Seppi 7-6 (7-4) 3-3 Edmund*

Andreas Seppi shows lovely touch at the net for a man of 191cm, hitting a deft volley that most of us club players can only dream of.

He follows that up with one of the accurate serves that saw him through the first set tie-break. Edmund lets us know what he can do by slapping a return winner but he can't deny his opponent taking the game.

  3. Edmund finding his range?published at 06:50 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2018

Radio 5 live sports extra commentator at Melbourne Park

Edmund has to make a statement that he can hurt Seppi. There have been some rallies in this set where's he's hit the ball hard. In the first set he was relying on his serve too much.

    *Seppi 7-6 (7-4) 2-3 Edmund

This is the best tennis of the match from Edmund. A huge hit from the British number two with a shoulder-high forehand and then ace number 11 closes out the game.

We have a match on our hands now.

Andy Murray never looks like he's saving anything in matches. You think he can't carry on any more and is dead on the court but he finds a way. Nadal is the same.

Kyle is still learning that. I would tell Kyle to go all guns blazing now. If it doesn’t work, you have to say too good.

  6. Edmund breaks backpublished at 06:46 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2018

    Seppi 7-6 (7-4) 2-2 Edmund*

    Fourth time lucky!

Seppi plays an uncharacteristically sloppy shot and then Edmund booms a forehand a point later. He's back on terms.

The crowd cheer. Edmund's coach is on his feet. Edmund looks up for this again.

    *Seppi 7-6 (7-4) 2-1 Edmund

No!!! Another smash into the net from Edmund. Brilliant defence from Seppi but that was a huge chance. That has to be put away.

Three break points gone. Back to deuce.

    *Seppi 7-6 (7-4) 2-1 Edmund

    Two errors from Edmund. Loose.

He's got one more chance to break left...

    *Seppi 7-6 (7-4) 2-1 Edmund

Now then. You feel Kyle Edmund has to capitalise here.

He brings up three break points on the Seppi serve.

  10. Change of tactics required?published at 06:41 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2018

Perhaps Kyle needs to change up the pace of his shots, use some slices instead of pure power, because Seppi seems to be using Kyle's pace against him.

  11. Seppi breakspublished at 06:41 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2018

    *Seppi 7-6 (7-4) 2-1 Edmund

Wide from Edmund. With his opponent playing this well you feel he has to push the boundaries in terms of attacking but a backhand goes wide. Seppi is playing at a level that had him up inside the world's top 20 at the moment, rather than reflecting his current ranking of 76.

23-year-old Edmund now trails by a set and a break.

  12. Postpublished at 06:38 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2018

    Seppi 7-6 (7-4) 1-1 Edmund*

Too good. Seppi, with one leg in the air, slaps a forehand winner cross-court from three feet behind the baseline.

And another! The Italian can do no wrong at the moment. Serious trouble for Edmund. Two break points to Seppi.

  13. Postpublished at 06:36 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2018

    Seppi 7-6 (7-4) 1-1 Edmund*

That was a chance. Kyle Edmund brings up 0-30 on the Seppi serve and for the first time can apply pressure onto Seppi. He fails to convert though, putting a smash into the net on the way to losing the game.

  14. Game and second set Schwartzmanpublished at 06:35 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2018

    Nadal 6-3 6-7 (4-7) Schwartzman

    How about that?!

Diego Schwartzman wins the tie-break to take the second set against the number one seed.

That's the first set Rafael Nadal has dropped all tournament - it's only the second tie-break he's been taken to.

    Game on.

He nearly sneaked it but in truth Edmund did well to force a tie-break after a pretty flat first set from his point of view. He has at least learned not to leave space for Seppi’s backhand down the line.

Edmund’s coach Freddie Rosengren, sitting in the front row just a few metres away, is deep in conversation with Davis Cup captain Leon Smith. The Swede is a famously animated watcher, urging his man to step it up.

  16. Postpublished at 06:33 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2018

    Seppi 7-6 (7-4) 0-1 Edmund*

That's better. Still plenty of aggression from Kyle Edmund but the ball keeps landing inside the lines this time. A hold to love. A few signs of him getting to the ball quicker too.

  17. Kyle needs quick pick-me-uppublished at 06:31 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2018

    Dom Inglot
Great Britain Davis Cup player on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

This is going to be tough now. Kyle will have to dig deep. His energy levels weren't the highest and now he's got to go another three sets at least if he's to win.

He'll need a quick pick-me-up in this set or he'll have to fire it up and create some adrenaline from somewhere.

  18. Postpublished at 06:31 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2018

    Seppi 7-6 (7-4) 0-0 Edmund*

Just five unforced errors from Andreas Seppi in that first set. That was the big difference. Edmund's tally was up at 23.

Seppi has been making the most of the 10 years of experience he has over his opponent. Edmund will start us off in this second set.

Number one seed Rafael Nadal was on the verge of taking a two-set lead against Diego Schwartzman, but the Argentine has just broken back to take the second to a tie-break.

The Spaniard won the opener 6-3, and after more than an hour in the second thought he had earned the crucial break at 5-5.

But 24th seed Schwartzman broke the Nadal serve a moment later, and we have a tie-break.

Number six seed Marin Cilic awaits the winner...

  20. Game and first setpublished at 06:27 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2018

    Seppi 7-6 (7-4) Edmund

Clinical. Andreas Seppi bided his time in that tie-break but at the key moment found two backhand winners. Kyle Edmund is going to have to come from behind in this one.
