A shot and a half from Simona Halep, standing tall and whipping a forehand into the corner of the court.

Good grit from Kerber to fight back from 0-30 down, but break point comes up for Halep with another netted forehand...

They’ve not played well at the same time to this point. But signs they will. If they do, could yet be a classic.

    Halep 6-3 2-1 Kerber*

These two will chase anything down, as Kerber goes storming from right to left before Halep steps in and lands a backhand squarely onto the baseline.

A double fault for 15-15 brings about a murmur from the crowd, before Halep whips a down the line forehand out.

A couple of steps and a swing of the arms allows Halep to batter her forehand over, and she holds thanks to a pacey serve.

    *Halep 6-3 1-1 Kerber

Angelique Kerber puts plenty of top spin on a forehand winner, but she has less luck with a drop shot that finds the foot of the net.

It's still a bit scrappy on Kerber's serve, the German rushing through a couple of forehands, but she holds with a yell and a thudding winner.

"Nein!" cries a nearby German press man.

We've had the full range of oohs, aaahs, gasps and guffaws from the crowd in that opening 25 minutes, as bizarre a set as we have seen on Rod Laver Arena this tournament.

Those who were enjoying a leisurely mid-match stroll and a bite to eat are now returning for what they might have thought would be the climax of a tight first set.

"New Sensation" rings round the stands again, INXS getting plenty of airplay in their hometown over this two weeks.

    Halep 6-3 1-0 Kerber*

That's how to start a set off.

Back-to-back aces from Simona Halep get her to 40-0, before Kerber finally gets a sniff with a swipe of a forehand that the Romanian nets.

Kerber aims down the line, and misses. A hold to start us off.

Angelique Kerber has nipped off for a comfort break and, I assume, a minute to collect herself.

Despite her struggles first up, Kerber is actually leading Halep in terms of winners - she's hit nine to the Romanian's seven.

    Halep 5-3 Kerber*

Halep lands a forehand right onto the baseline and it's called out, but Hawk-Eye soon clears things up.

We replay the point and Kerber lashes a forehand long for 0-40.

    What is going on?!

It's like Halep and Kerber have swapped bodies. Halep overworks a volley, before Kerber hits a gorgeous cross-court strike that draws the error out of Halep.

Three break points to the German.

    *Halep 5-2 Kerber

Angelique Kerber has just arrived at the Rod Laver Arena.

Her feet move and she finds that strength to crack successive forehand winners down the line. An angled return from Halep is the only point the Romanian gets, as Kerber charges to the net to win a battle of the volleys.

That's better from Kerber, forcing the error out of Halep as she comes up to the net, and the German has three break points.

Kerber is on the scoreboard! She forces Halep to move, a flicky forehand sits up and Kerber smacks it down the line.

    *Halep 5-0 Kerber

A long rally, both players getting pushed from corner to corner, but it's Kerber who comes out on top as Halep hoicks a forehand into the net.

Good serve from Kerber to overpower Halep, but that's brilliant from Halep! She controls a rally and then forces the error out of Kerber.

She's going to serve for the set after 14 minutes!
